Has the NorEx actually had what constitutes a 'refit', or has it just been in storage at Deas? That's what I thought. She was just in for what could be considered a short naptime.

Refits so far this season: Starting September 2009 Tenaka Powell River Queen Queen of Coquitlam Northern Expedition Kwuna Quinsam ( phase 2 MLU) Coastal Renaissance SOVI Queen of Cowichan Queen of Alberni Queen of Chilliwack SOBC Queen of New West Nimpkish Queen of Surrey Kahloke is currently in refit too. I know, it's usually napping for an extended time too in the winter months, but thanks to the Tenaka's long refit and the closure of Quathiaski Cove terminal coming up, Kahloke has been utilized more than usual this winter. Has the NorEx actually had what constitutes a 'refit', or has it just been in storage at Deas? That's what I thought. She was just in for what could be considered a short naptime. 6 months seems like a pretty long nap to me! You could also consider the Wack to be napping a fair amount too. I'm sure they have been doing some fine tuning on the NorEx while at Deas, so that could be somewhat considered a small refit process.

MV Quinsam to return on April 15. This according to this story in the March 22, 2010 edition of the Gabriola Sounder. www.soundernews.com/fullstory/EkyAFykFZAOZmCdWjR.shtmlThe Printed version has pictures of refitt work been done. The Quinsam is docked in between the Queen of Surrey and the Queen of Chilliwack. Her interior passenger lounges will be very siminlar to the mv Quinitsa.

Regarding Safety drills mentioned in that story:
April 11th she'll be in the spotlight during a SAREX (Search and Rescue Exercise). The Coast Guard and RCMP will be running out to her as if she was in distress. I will be onboard the Quinsam pretending to be a casualty. I'll try and bring a camera with me, but no guarantees.

So the Nanaimo aint going out till next winter??? I would think they would want to do a refit before the summer season starts! So she will have gone almost at year without a refit?

I think the Nanny won't be the only one to go without a refit this year. Some others that currently haven't had 09-10 refits include: Howe Sound Queen Skeena Queen Mayne Queen Queen of Cumberland Queen of CapilanoThe reason why I only point these ones out is because these 5 ferries all have the same replacement vessel while in refit: the Bowen Queen. Once the BQ finishes up on the Gabriola run around April 15th, it will surely 'mule' her way to another route. I'm guessing only 2 of the above 5 ferries will get a refit period before this summer considering they'll only have just over 2 months to work with.

All those available with cameras in hand.
Tuesday is said to be the updated scheduled day for sea trials of renewed Quinsam. Sea trials were schedule Monday the 29th but were not able go as planned. If things goes as well later in week or early next week the vessel moved to Nanaimo Harbour for crew training for couple of weeks.

I don't know how you guys drag those little boxes with other peoples quotes in them into your text... It doesn't work for me! But anyways, in response to several things on this page:
1). The Queen of Nanaimo is scheduled for refit Oct-Nov, so it will be a little before winter... And she'll make it fine. She's a good ship. Her only problems are cosmetic, so the crew has been trying to pretty her up so she doesn't look so forlorn... :-)
2). The Skeena Queen had a refit May-June of 2009, so it wasn't that long ago... The Mayne was done just before her in the spring.
3). The Coastal Inspiration is currently in refit at EGD, and The NorAd is also in refit, I believe at Deas...
There's my two cents worth for the day. Have fun y'all!

Regarding MV Quadra Queen II:
- It looks like her engines are hurting, and she will be limping into refit soon.
Service notice:
- Tachek is busy with the Quadra route for the coming week, which likely means that QQII has to hold-on until Tachek can relieve her, following Tachek's Quadra-Island gig.

Your vessel swap hunch was correct. Just looked at Siitech and the Quadra Queen II is currently at Deas.

from the BCFS news-release about the Quinsam's return, is this bit of news for the QQ2: Further evidence- along with the major refit of Tenaka- that the retirement schedule of a few years ago is completely out the window. Fans of these plucky little single enders should be happy that the boats appear to have quite a few years left in them yet.

Looks like the Queen of Surrey's impromptu "emergency refit" will continue a bit longer. The Coquitlam is now showing up on RBI as the main route 3 vessel for the upcoming long weekend.

It was a part of the 2003 Coastal Ferry Services Contract... www.bcferries.com/files/AboutBCF/Coastal_Ferry_Services_Contract.pdf...You can see the date for each vessel by scrolling through the individual routes. The latest revision I saw had the Tenaka being the only vessel slated for replacement; even that seems to have been dropped. Steel electrics deja vu? One hopes not.

The latest revision I saw had the Tenaka being the only vessel slated for replacement; even that seems to have been dropped. Steel electrics deja vu? One hopes not. Let's pretend here for a minute. What if the Tenaka were to be replaced sometime in the next ten years or so? What would the new ship look like? Similar to the current T-Class ships, or a totally new-fangled design, and what would this new design, if chosen, look like? Would it be bigger? Smaller? More or less pax-space? Big wide bridges, like in all of BC Ferries other newer ships, or conventional, narrow bridges? Catamaran, like the North Island Princess, or single-hulled?
