Okay, I know I'm a little late with this, but whatever :P

1) Best ferry photo: This was a tie between about 10 different photos, so I just posted this one, which is the Northern Expedition at sunset.

2) Most unique: Queen of New Westminster peeking over the top of it's berth, while a paperboy slacks off on the job.

3) Historical artifact: An old postcard of the Queen of Prince Rupert.

According to a photo above, the exhaust pipes weren't added until at least 1997, as there is a photo there taken in 1997 with no pipes.

Why did they add the smokestacks?? They obviously didn't need them since they weren't there for the first 3 decades of her life, and their addition sure didn't help her appearance.

It appears those smokestacks were installed sometime in the last 10-15 years.

If that doesn't convince you, than it isn't the PRQ, it's the Campbell River Queen.

The stacks were added for the same reason the stacks on the NIP were added. Originally, the exhaust vented at the waterline, but there was a concern about smoke on the car deck and the exhaust was re-routed to discharge above the ship. If I remember correctly, the NIP was modified in the late 80s, so I would think the PRQ was around the same time.

Regarding the wild-luke-chase for the PRQ:

The first 2 photos of this thread shows her without the stacks:

Next urgent crisis? Perhaps a query about the Aesop story "The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf"?

According to RBI right now the week before the olympics they show the SOVI as not running and the New West and Celebration as the main ships on route 1 with the SOVI as an extra that Friday and Sunday before the olympic schedule starts! Anyone know what is up with that?? It could be wrong as it sometimes is but it's back to normal Friday Feb 11!

Flugel's right. That's definitely PRQ. Whoever did the painting just didn't include the smoke stacks, that's all.

The Sea Imp IX made a brief appearance again in a stopped position just after 1:00pm today at 50°28.058'N 126°09.651'W (copy/paste those co-oridinates in on google maps). I'm assuming this is where she has let go of the Saanich, and there was no other vessels listed nearby on Siitech at the time. So I suppose the Saanich is simply just sitting just further up the Strait from Kelsey Bay, unless something else was sitting there waiting to pick her up to take her to the final destination. The Sea Imp IX is also now currently steaming full speed ahead Southbound in the Georgia Strait.

Someone on Flickr managed to snap a photo as she coasted past Nanaimo yesterday.

They weren't operating between Christmas and New Year's, and I don't recall seeing a tide notice in the days just before Christmas, when they mentioned their holiday shutdown. The notice is still up today, and again, the tide is no lower than five feet. Very odd.

PRQ is the only ship with sides like that.

Here's your homework, youngling:

- Process of elimination: go through the various minor vessels on your poster, and eliminate the obvious ones. If you have 1 vessel left, and haven't identified the HSQ yet, then your mystery ship is likely the Napoleon Hound Dog.

I've already done that...

Quote:

If you have 2 of 3 vessels left, consider that it might be the SS-Queen and the V-Queen. You can decipher what I'm saying...

I've identified those.

I've also positively I.D'd the H.S Queen.

My mystery ship isn't on BCF's fleet page, so I suspect it's been retired.
It looks a tiny bit smaller than the Queen of Capilano.

edit:

here's a photo of it on the painting. I hope this isn't illegal to do this :-[

See, on the upper left. That's either the SSQ or the VQ. The one in the middle puzzles me...

Although it should be noted, perhaps stating the obvious, that even with power available to both screws on one engine, it isn't ANYWHERE like the power of two engines.

If it is the Howe Sound Queen, she is in between the PRQ and the Bowen/Mayne and the Nanaimo and Burnaby

If she is on the other side of the PRQ and Mayne/Bowen, it is probably the Vesuvius/Saltspring Queen.

A question about the poster that's been tormenting me since I got it.

There's only ONE ferry on this poster I don't recognize.

To locate it, go to the bottom right corner of the PICTURE PART of the poster, then with a ruler, measure 18cm to the right, then move your finger straight up from that point. It's the ferry on the bottom. First I thought 'Howe Sound Queen', but I don't think she looks like that...

 Re: Sealth
« Result #23 Yesterday at 4:02pm »

The Sealth casualty is a broken output shaft due to Cooper bearing failure. Fortunately the Issaquah class was designed so that each main engine could provide power to both propellers. The Steel Electrics, the Supers and every other WSF vessel delivered since 1967 have this feature.

The Island Home class does not have this capacity. If the Sealth casualty presents itself on the Chetzamoka or her sisters, there would be no way to turn the screw on that end of the ship.

This is one of several significant deficiencies in the IH class that WSF's engineering crews have been warning management and the legislature about. These concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

The single end failure casualty is especially significant on Chetzamoka because the IH class works in Keystone. This terminal facility is subject to severe tidal and weather conditions which require a high speed entry into the harbor. The small size of the harbor then requires a rapid deceleration.

Because the stopping thrust on a double ended ferry is primarily generated by the bow propeller, any failure of the bow drive train during a Keystone landing will result in significant grounding or allision.

Grounding the Chetzamoka will likely cause much more damage than on a Steel Electric because the greater exposure of their propeller/shafting/rudder.

The Chetzamoka is a step backwards in safety and reliability for WSF and the Sealth casualty could not exemplify that deficiency better.

Anacortes/San Juan Islands Running Late
The Evergreen State, which is slightly slower then the Sealth, is currently running 25 minutes behind schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience.

So today I thought I'd do the Evergreen State since she's back filling in on her old route.

Probably the earliest shot of a ferry building I've ever seen--the keel of the Evergreen. (And why Corbis has it, I've no clue.)

Construction well underway...gives you a good view of her massive pickleforks and small cabin.

A mere 2 million to build her. Of course in '54 that was a big chunk of change!

The finished Evergreen on sea trials.

The original galley as photographed by Joe Williamson. Very 50's...and it's a pity they didn't leave well enough alone. Personally I think her redesigned galley is far inferior to the original. Courtesy of PSMHS/MOHAI.

Another Williamson shot of the passenger cabin as it looked before the rebuild in '88 that resulted in the removal of her ceiling. Courtesy of PSMHS/MOHAI.

The oldest postcard of the Evergreen I own...note the lack of the central mast that went up in '59 when she started doing the Anacortes-Sidney run.

My favorite postcard of her from the 50's.

There are two versions of this postcard--this one is slightly more rare. The other is the same shot, but cropped in closer to the Evergreen.

Arriving at Sidney some time in the 1970's.

At Anacortes in the height of summer by the looks of the snow on Mt. Baker.

Another one of my favorite shots of her. There aren't enough "evening" postcards of ferries out there.

With Koma Kulshan, the "Great White Watcher" providing a majestic backdrop.

A few years back they held a "terror drill" on board the Evergreen, as at the time she was in reserve status. It provided for some dramatic photos.

This photo would have been more effective were it not for the "victim" splayed out "dramatically" in the foreground...it's just kind of obvious that the person is propping themselves up in such a way that they can stay in that position while still being fairly comfortable. ;)

Wrapping up with my favorite photo that I have taken of her from Washington Park in Anacortes in July of 2000.

The Issaquah-Class vessels and the Supers are scheduled to do the Anacortes-Friday Harbor direct sailings in 65 minutes. I believe Evergreen does it in +/- 80 minutes, although I'm not really sure about that one anymore.

The pilot house ceilings on the FSG new-builds (ie. Coastals and Norex) are blue:

Older vessels do not necessarily have dark ceilings, such as the Queen of Vancouver shown here:

Gentlemen, thank you for sharing your tour photos! I am relieved to see the wheelhouses look a bit more practical in size than they initially appeared. (They always look in the photos like two people would have to turn sideways to pass.)

Still, I'm hoping the radars will be on the forward console instead of independent pedestals (typical WSF installation) or they'll lose floor space in a hurry... ;D

And one last thing, for the BC Brigade: does BC Ferries paint the overheads (ceilings) in their pilothouses black? Most, if not all, WSF pilothouses have black overheads to reduce glare, which is why I was surprised to see the Island Home's P/H ceiling is white.

Again, thank you for sharing! :)

Certainly the reason for the Kaleetan takeover is the Evergreen will be running so late by midday the only way to keep the schedule is to have a faster ferry take over - certainly the Kaleetan will leave Anacortes before the Evergreen even arrives! ;)

Nice to see the Evergreen running mainline service out of Anacortes again...

Our main correspondent at FSG uses Picassa. Here is his site. It looks just fine to me and compares reasonably well with Flickr, photobucket, etc.

Here's her profile on Harlow Marine. She is in fact sold.

Also for an update on her position, she's sailing past Campbell River, and saying her goodbyes to the Powell River Queen as she coasts along at 5.7 knots.

Does anyone here use Picasa's Web-Albums to host their photos?

I'm just wondering if that's a good alternative to my current habit of using Tinypic.com ?

I don't use Picasa to edit my photos, but I am interested in using it's Web-Albums to host my photos; if that's possible.

Re: General news articles on BC Ferries
« Result #36 on Jan 6, 2010, 9:09pm »

I'll post my usual shipping magazine updates here because one of them includes the I Sky and the second one a one step removed from the CATS.

In the latest American Shipping News Vol. 130 there is a three page article on the Island Sky with pictures. It covers a lot of aspects of the ferry from a technical and machinery side. Well worth a perusal at your local Indigo/Chapters or where ever is best for mags around you.

The final paragraph is as follows. "On a purse strings note, BC taxpayers, who are often upset with cost overruns on British Columbia-built ferries, should be pleased to hear that it was built on a fixed cost contract to oblige the private sector to be efficient. Word on the BC waterfront is the ship's replacement cost could be twice the C$45.5 million contracted price. It is hard to find a fine vessel at better-than-market price." I may have missed the odd word as I took a couple calls when I was typing this :).

Also in that issue is the usual update on ferries. Also an article on ferry construction with a good deal of it centred on the East Coast. Of note the Hawaii Supercats are still laid up in Norfolk waiting buyers after they were reposessed but with an odd comment that a military conversion maybe possible. There was a line about the Ferry for Kitsap Transit, a couple of Alaska ferries/taxis and the Pacific Breeze, among others like the taxi's for New York Harbor.

Lastly there was an article about another Canadian fireboat, the City of Portland, built for Portland, Maine, this one coming from Nova Scotia.

The December Issue of Shipping Monthly has an article on the St. Laurent Class of the Canadian Navy, now mostly broken up or as reefs. It also includes an article on new technologies and designs including ferries. I thought for sure they would comment on ICON from FSG. But instead it seemed like a lot of Wartsila ideas for LPG powered ferries, cruise ships with wind enhanced power, and other new ideas. The end of the previous article had a high heat fuel cell idea for a ship being tested in Europe. As usual tons of updates on cruise ships and Euro ferries with a focus on Britain and Europe.

Finally the sort of connection to former the PacifiCATS comes via news of Abu Dhabi Mar in the latest Yachts Magazine. ADM in partnership with ThyssenKrupp Marine, has launched a joint venture with Bloom and Voss Naval. In related news ADM has purchased the mega yacht division of Bloom and Voss that has produced some of the worlds largest and most famous yachts. So it appears the economic challenges faced by UAE neighbour Dubai hasn't dampened the deep pockets of neighbour Abu Dhabi. The naval frigate conversion to yachts was mentioned briefly but no details on the CATS. You may recall that when the tallest building in the world in next door Dubai was renamed this week in honor of the Prince of Abu Dhabi in recognition of his role in bailing out the high flying Dubai projects. I would think the

Hawaii Cats could have found a good home there too but I doubt they are going for as good a price and there are only two not three.

What a lot of nonsense. The tide at Point Atkinson tomorrow hits a low of five feet at 6pm. As Paul says, the Coastal Runner doesn't need a lot of water under her hull.

This company might be in danger of scraping the bottom, but it's not sea bottom that's the problem...

Yes, It's the Queen of Saanich. She's finally been sold, and she's being updated at Nichols Brothers Shipyard for use on the Bremerton run.

With the wide-spread publicity from the recent scrapping of the Willapa, the residents of Bremerton have been reminded of the beauty of a single-ended vessel sailing through Rich Passage. The soon to be refitted and renamed 'Saanich will soon be a reminder of those good old days.

Oops, flug! You made a dire mistake! Saanich was in Slug-blue when she was retired... maybe you're thinking of her long-lost cousin, Queen of Sidney, or the Ghost of the QoVictoria...unless...no. It couldn't be! I think it's the first CLEAR picture of the Queen of Richmond! Wow!!! :o :o

Tide tables at Pt.Atinkson (closest reporting station to Ambleside).

http://www.waterlevels.gc.ca/cgi-bin/tide-shc.cgi

The Coastal Link ferry Coastal Runner has a draft of 1.75m,
which isn't much more than your average 25' motor sailer with
inboard-outboard.

Has the company done any local paper advertising since it
started? One thing about new companies (amongst many other things) is advertising. It's a huge expense, but it is nessesary.

Seems he is missing quite a few steps of opportunity. It is difficult to market the appeal of flopping around in an aluminum tub in early January during a cold rain and wind, but he should
be out there marketing the service if he really believes in what
the service can offer.

I've helped a guy with his upstart business doing direct marketing
and web based marketing and presence but
it was a huge effort (my part), and moderate expense (friend's part) and paid off (company's part), with some return (my part).

Neil is correct in his views, takes time to set a business.

it's a limited market as there wouldn't be many in Tiddlycove (aka: West Vancouver) taking a ferry from there as there would
be from Lonsdale.

Subsidies? If I had the decision, I wouldn't go with that. There's
no real justification for it, but he does have access to many upstart business assistance programmes offered by the Federal and Provincial Gummints provided he does have a workable
business plan.

I'll go with my first assumption - wonder how long this one is going to last.

The South Salish Sea region is littered with wrecks of companies
that tried with best of intentions to provide ferry service.

A-News reported tonight that the Saanich has been sold. They had some video of her voyage today. No mention of who the purchaser is or what the destination is.

My wife saw the vessel on the move today too. I told her that she must have been mistaken. I'm now eating crow....

Right...but Everett is more or less doing the finishing work...the ferry will be assembled at Todd, and that will include all the wiring, equipment installation, etc. Everett will be fitting out the boat--insulation,flooring, furniture, doors etc. ;)

The Queen of Saanich left Nanaimo this morning, and I got to watch her sail by under tow by the jobsite I was working at near Hammond Bay in Nanaimo. I had an excellent view of this for about 3-4 hours because they were moving so slow. The Saanich and the tug Sea Imp IX are heading up the Strait as I type this message. She's currently just off of Little River, and is fairly close to the Queen of Burnaby at the moment. My guess is she's headed for Campbell River. So this sounds like a job for our vessel trackers to figure out where she goes tonight.

On the way home from work, I drove past the Nanaimo assembly warf to find the Vancouver still tied up there. This is somewhat puzzling to me, because if BC Ferries is just simply repositioning the Saanich, that means they had to move the Vancouver out of the way to get the Saanich out. So it would have made more sense to just move the Vancouver because she was tied up along the outside of the Saanich. So if they specifically moved the Saanich, I'm wondering if shes been sold?

The CLF website has had this same message for the past few days:

No further explanation, and no indication of when the "WV pm" service will start again. I haven't checked my tide-tables, so I don't know how long this problem will last. I guess that the 5 regular WV customers all have their tide-charts memorized.

And does anyone know why a low tide would prevent them from docking at "WV"? Is that area too shallow for the MV Coastal Runner?

I guess that the lack of a covered shelter isn't the only problem preventing customers from using the "WV" service.

-----------
In other news, research has shown that clear and descriptive communication helps potential customers to find and try a new business.

The hull is being built in Seattle by Todd Shipyard. These three cabin sections will be barged to Seattle for mating onto the Main Deck superstructures. Then, this ferry will be completed in Everett.

They're taking it easy on the the engine they can use--Barnacle is currently aboard taking her to Eagle Harbor. They've been averaging about 13 knots. It's been down to 11 through Admiralty Inlet, but that may be because of tides/traffic.

I doubt very much they'll be able to keep the schedule with the Hiyu/Evergreen...I assume that's why they've got the Kaleetan taking over the afternoon runs for the Sealth.

Ferry Alert: Anacortes/San Juan Island's - Update

"Service between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands will return to the standard winter schedule on Thursday, January 7 when the 34-car ferry Hiyu will replace the 87-car Evergreen State as the interisland ferry and the Evergreen State will shift over to operate for the 90-car Sealth, which is out of service. The Evergreen State will run the Sealth's morning sailings and the Kaleetan will operate the afternoon sailings until further notice."

Can they really maintain the schedule with a smaller boat (Hiyu) on the inter-island route and a slower boat (Evergreen State) on the mainline routes?

On Tuesday, January 5th, the MV Sealth was taken out of service to assess mechanical damage. After troubleshooting, engineers have found damage to the engine output shaft, requiring the vessel to be out of service for an extended period of time.

For Wednesday, Jan. 6th, the 11:20AM sailing from Anacortes to Shaw and Orcas Island will run 45 minutes late. This will also affect the 12:20pm sailing from Shaw and the 12:55pm sailing from Orcas to Anacortes. Updates will occur when conditions change.

Riders on the 2:05 p.m. sailing aboard the Sealth out of Anacortes responded to a general alarm and gathered at the emergency stations when smoke came out of the engine room. It turned out to be a bearing failure - not a fire.

The ferry continued on with power from one engine to Friday Harbor where cars and passengers disembarked. After clearance from the Coast Guard, the crew took the Sealth back to Anacortes. Washington State Ferries Public Information Officer Susan Harris said no estimate on the repair time was available yet.

The San Juan Islander was bit off last night. Here's the scoop:
On Tuesday, January 5th, the MV Sealth was taken out of service to assess mechanical damage. After troubleshooting, engineers have found damage to the engine output shaft, requiring the vessel to be out of service for an extended period of time.
For Wednesday, Jan. 6th, the 6:20 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Lopez is canceled. A late 7:10 a.m. sailing from Lopez to Friday Harbor will be made by the Inter-island ferry. Also canceled is the 8:05 a.m. sailing from Friday Harbor to Anacortes, the 9:25 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Lopez and the 10:20 a.m. sailing from Lopez to Anacortes. The 11:20 a.m. sailing from Anacortes to Shaw and Orcas Island is also canceled as is the 12:20 p.m. sailing from Shaw and the 12:55 p.m. sailing from Orcas to Anacortes. Or is this just an expansion of Seaspan's service?

It's all Washington Group, whether they call it Southern Railway, or Seaspan. Don't they have rail loading facilities at Chemainus, as well as Nanaimo?

I don't know why this facility on Annacis is needed, when they can load railcars at Tilbury. Perhaps it's a capacity issue, although present volumes don't seem to indicate that. Perhaps landlocked has more insight into this.

Perhaps this is an indication of where Washington Group plans to focus in the future. If more freight is transported to and from the Island by rail, that would seem to mean less by truck, which would cannibalize their Seaspan ferry operations. Maybe they're planning to focus on rail, and eventually abandon truck trailer operations to BC Ferries, who apparently are serious about expanding their new venture.

I wonder if David Hahn will be tempted in future to bring up this federal contribution to the new railcar loading dock, when Seaspan next complains about the difficulty of competing with a subsidized rival.

So, my hometown now has another 'port' connecting it to Vancouver Island. Whether we're talking passenger, truck, or rail, Delta is the biggest mainland connection, from Tsawwassen, Tilbury, and Annacis. I'll have to locate this new terminal and see what they're using for vessels, and post some shots.

I suspect that this is Seaspan and that there will be no new Vancouver Island terminal.

The sorry condition of virtually all of the road bed on the former E&N puts its future in grave doubt. There is only one route to salvation that I can see, that being the need to collectively reduce our 'carbon foot print'. I understand that steel wheels moving on steel rails requires much less energy then moving the same freight over the same distance with rubber tires on asphalt. In short, the railways are supposed to be greener.

Well some of you have noticed my absence, and most of you don't care, but I'll just clear some stuff up anyway.

My desktop computer promptly stopped connecting to the internet upon receiving a signal from our new D-Link wireless router (the router has been returned to Future Shop). As a Jesus Day gift, I received an HP Netbook which will allow me to surf the Forum once again.

So after a short break, The Flyer is back, browsing your posts, surfing your photos and riding your ferries. ;D

Adding to Flug's post, the IOC, or VANOC, or whoever it is seem to be really nit-picky about adding an 's' to the word Olympic, or using the 5 rings. There was a small pizza joint in Vancouver who had to change their name because of legal action put against them.

NOTE: THIS MESSAGE WILL SELF-DESTRUCT (be deleted) ON WEDNESDAY We don't wanna be sued for mentioning the above information, do we?

It is really not VANOC but the IOC. The IOC routinely defends the use of the word Olympics for commercial purposes. Every city/country that gets awarded the Games is also required to defend the trademark. You can imagine the contract for the Olympics fills binders and there are lots of requirements and responsibilities. Naturally having the Games in a city speeds up the recognition of the use of the trademark. But you often see some small business in some more out of the way location having to change their name.

I would imagine they have trademark lawyers on retainer who on a routine basis check the business records of major centres to see about useage. Large corporations can even be more agressive than the IOC.

Here's a story about a new rail facility at Annacis Island. Does anyone know:
1) Who will be operating the rail barges from this new terminal?
2) Where the other terminal will be on the Vancouver Island side?

Or is this just an expansion of Seaspan's service?

Terminal may boost Island freight traffic
New rail barge facility on Annacis Island links Vancouver Island to larger markets

A rail barge terminal that began operation last weekend near Delta will help Vancouver Island's struggling railway system attract more freight business, say the operators of the railway.

The $11-million Annacis Rail Marine Terminal, located at Annacis Island, will connect freight traffic along the former E&N Railway -- now called Southern Railway of Vancouver Island -- with other major railway networks in North America, said Ken Doiron, VP Business Development for Southern Railway of British Columbia, which operates the line.

Doiron said the new facility will help attract more freight customers to the railway, business that is essential for it to be viable.

According to the Rule of 100, a generally accepted economic formula for short-line railways, a minimum of 100 freight cars per mile, per year, are required before a line can make a profit. The old E&N route now averages about 6.6 cars per mile.

Doiron wouldn't provide exact statistics on the amount of freight traffic in 2009 and 2008, but said levels have been flat at about 1,000 cars per year.

He said the rail marine terminal, built with the help of $4.6 million in federal funding, will provide customers with the ability to compare prices for shipping freight with other railways while also improving transit times.

"But with the increased competition and improvements in transit times, we now have a product we can go to customers with," said Doiron.

"It strengths the overall viability of the railway to do many things."

Graham Bruce, executive director of the Island Corridor Foundation, which owns the railway, said the new facility puts "Vancouver Island within the marketplace of North America."

The ICF has estimated there is a potential market of 22,000 rail cars worth of freight each year on Vancouver Island. It has been lobbying governments for upgrades to the tracks to bring it up to North American standards, estimated to cost $103.8 million.

Here's my sigpic for the first month of 2010. After the Olly's, I'm gonna put a smaller version of it as my profile pic, and I'll put normal photos up again.
