For a guy who has to walk a half a kilometer to school every day it doesn't really stress me out... did that come out as bad as it sounded?? I don't think this thread is going anywhere not for now, anyway

Do you ever shovel the snow off of your roof, Jim? The snow must be really stressfull on the tresses. Snow can be very stressful on the tresses. You wear a toque, you get hat head... I have a distinct shortage of hair. Very few tresses to get stressed by the snow. Har Har. Tress = Truss. I had a feeling that wasn't right, and the sarcastic brothers would be the first to respond. ...This reminds me of my last error....pole=poll...........

You know, I took the high road and let it smoke right on by... took the pitch, as it were. I see the count's now 0-and-1, so I won't let that happen again... When there's stress on your truss And the truck's got a bus Laying nearly on it's side Up Coquihalla, Then you know the second verse Will always have something worse Like a poorly timed rhyme For Walla Walla! ;D

I feel that I must add to the fuss over trusses.
Canada's National Building Code (NBC) requires roof trusses to be built to take snow loads that are about as heavy as can be anticipated in a given region. Areas such as BC's inland north coast (Kitimat, Stewart) can get roof loadings of heavy wet 'old' snow greater than one metre deep with weights exceeding 500 kg per m2 of roof. Trusses must be capable of handling more than that.
In Vancouver and Victoria I would bet the NBC requires roof trusses to support loads up to 250 kg per m2.
I have, in the past, attempted to shovel off the roof of my old house. I got the job 1/4 done and gave up. It is one **** of a lot of work.
BTW, probably half the people in Kitimat have snow blowers to remove the snow from their driveways. They blow the snow on their lawns which makes the depth on the lawn greater than it would otherwise be.
To add to that the snow from the street goes in the same place. The District of Kitimat has an impressive fleet of snow moving equipment, including large snow blowers. Cleaning residential streets is a 3-step process. First a grader comes along and windrows snow on one side of the street into the centre. Later, the same machine comes along the other side of the street adding to the pile in the centre which may get to be a metre and a half tall. Later still, the third step is completed when the blower comes along and picks up the windrow and deposits it on your front lawn. By mid February in a 'bad' year, the pile on your front lawn may get to be 5 metres deep! By mid March residents may be seen shoveling the snow back onto the road to speed up the melting process. Some even use their blowers.

Our mobile home would be a wooden pancake under loads like those (built in 1969 but refurbished lately).

So, what's up with all this violent weather, anyway?
Except for last week, since the beginning of November we've had nothing but extremes; of wind, snow, cold, and rain. Not to mention the power failures. Whatever happened to the nice, peaceful weeks of endless Vancouver drizzle? Should we blame global warming, el nino, or maybe Stephen Harper?
It has it's upside, I suppose. Took a return trip on the Kulleet today, after a tour through the Maple Ridge area, and the ferry was actually rocking, on a very choppy Fraser. Like being out on the Strait, sort of. They don't seem to do any sort of 'securing' exercise on those boats- they start unloading pretty much the second they hit the dock. Don't think there will be a single commuter who will lament their passing in three years or so, what with the often six sailing waits for a five minute crossing.
Then some Christmas shopping at Willowbrook, and down to White Rock, where the seagulls were doing their stationary hovering tricks in the steady gale force winds. No one at the end of the pier, where the waves crashing on the breakwater were sending sheets of spray up on the deck, and over the boats seeking shelter in the lee. Looked like the west coast of the Island with the breakers storming the shore. The wind was ferocious, but unusually warm for December. And as usual, the ice cream from Andy's (the friendliest ice cream shop on the beach, and one of the most generous) was excellent.
I could do without the storms, and the black outs, but, while they're here, I suppose we should make use of the entertainment, and perhaps not mind being humbled a bit by mother nature.

Here in Kamloops, its been clear blue skies for 5 out of the 7 days that I've been here now. But then the fog came in around last night, which made it dark at like 4:00pm last night. But the fog has burned off again, and now its clear blue skies, and sitting with a temperature of -2. I'd also say that there's only about a foot of snow on the ground, and I think it's great. Everyone is so relaxed, and not acting like it's the end of the world, which is how people would be reacting on the coast. But then again, there's a little bit better of a snow removal team here, so the helps quite a bit.

we had a sudden dumping this morning on Grouse and it was nice powder too. In the span of half an hour it went from clear and sunny to puking snow, then it cleared up nicely for my afternoon class.
