Horrible news, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. The report alludes to the name of the operator, but I'm waiting to hear more. My heart is very heavy.

Very bad news from the west coast of Vancouver Island ... Horrible news, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. The report alludes to the name of the operator, but I'm waiting to hear more. My heart is very heavy. The vessel that sunk was the MV Leviathan II. Tragic, that is all I can say & my thoughts & prayers are with survivors & families of all involved. For an updated story see this.

There is a shocking photo now posted on the CBC website showing this vessel about to go under. No word on causes but tons of armchair quarterbacks speculating in high gear.

Jim, I realize you're trying to impress us with what a mild Kitimat autumn you're having, but, really... blooming fuchsias just don't have that scare factor. Nice jack o' lantern, though. (and no, I'm not saying that in the sense of those Conservative attack ads about Trudeau's hair. I mean it.)

A story about a near tragedy in Gillard Pass near the Yuculta rapids. Article in the Times-Colonist This line stands out to me... "As the vessel came into the narrow Yuculta rapids, it was travelling more than 16 knots when it veered off course and hit a rock, Strain said." This accident took place at about 2am. The vessel was an older full displacement wood boat, probably capable of about 10 knots at full throttle. These fellows were passing through one of the most treacherous rapids on the coast of British Columbia at night on a strong flood tide. Usually mariners only attempt these rapids at or near slack water.

On October 1st, I posted about another mass shooting among our neighbors to the south. Don't know how many more there have been since then. Hard to keep track. I suggested that prayers and good wishes were worthless in the light of so much violence.
Here's a really powerful front page from the New York Daily News, after the latest atrocity from today.

The "thoughts and prayers" offerings from American politicians, (most notably Republicans), is an affront to human dignity. As long as partisan political policies support the misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment and the NRA, the American public will suffer more tragedies. The Department of Homeland Security can put someone on the no-fly list but that designation does not prevent that person from purchasing firearms? The realization may come some day that the power to make any meaningful changes to "gun-laws" in the U.S. rests solely in the hands of the American voting public. No wonder President Obama looks as tired and defeated when responding to yet another inhumane event in "America"

We don't have a category for yachts, yet. Here is a photo I took back in September that shows the WCFF management board's executive yacht returning from a day of ferry watching. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on FlickrOkay, the WCFF's actual management yacht is named HMCS Nanaimo. I don't yet have a photo of it though I will post one here just as soon as I can get one ... This yacht is, in fact, the Nova Spirit, seen in Vancouver waters off the Stanley Park shoreline - 22 September 2015. This belongs to BC's wealthiest person. I helped him to buy it though, with my frequent purchases from one of his many businesses. In fact I will post this and then head on down to Overwaitea and send him a little more so that he could trade this boat in on something a little more deluxe.

Yes, I did a search and found the thread lumped in with >>Cruise Boats?<<<. A strange place to be. How about a miscellaneous water craft category? I could put my canoeing photos there too?

What about your fringe benefits such as unlimited use of the 'company' yacht?

I did go shopping, but I went instead to today's 'Grand Opening' of Jimmy's competition here in Kitimat, 'No Frills'. The local 'Super Valu' store here was closed down back in August and was put through a huge MLU to become 'No Frills'. Jimmy will have to sharpen his pencil.

As long as there are any grocery staff earning any more than minimum wage and getting any sort of benefits, Jimmy's pencil can always get sharper. He's a past master at it, right from the days when he would lay off his lowest producing car salesman on a regular basis. Gotta pay for that yacht somehow.

I do believe I've exchanged pleasantries over the VHF a few times with you lads whilst storming the San Juans over the years. I was surprised to hear the HMCS Nanaimo, mostly because I keep hearing from the boats that are all named after prairie WHL towns.

Another Christmas has come. Hard to believe; seems like last Christmas was just yesterday. (perhaps that has something to do with me getting to open a couple presents yesterday)
Merry Christmas to you all, and a happy new year!

There's one annoying little development I've noticed on forums lately, and that is the post that includes the note 'sent from my ABC smartphone using Tapatalk'.
Is this the start of an ugly trend toward advertising being embedded in every communication we make? Is there any way for users to turn off the ad?

Is this the start of an ugly trend toward advertising being embedded in every communication we make? Is there any way for users to turn off the ad? I think we are a little sheltered here on ProBoards with regard to messages like that. There is a small line of text along the top (that I usually don't notice personally) that indicates what platform the post was made on. In this case, it will say "ProBoards Mobile", as I am posting this using the mobile site. Other forums are not so lucky (looks at transit forum), where a large line of text is added to the users post. I believe in that context it is up to the user to turn that " on" or "off" - it can't be controlled by the reader, or by staff. I remember over the summer I had a 2015 Ford Escape as a rental while my car was in the shop. It had the capability of writing text messages via voice command and working my phone over bluetooth. It turned out it was adding "Sent to you from my Ford" to every communication. That was the last day I allowed "My Ford" to write my messages.

Today I was walking the dike north of Roberts Bank with a recent acquaintance. The sun was getting low, and we were wondering what time it was. I looked out, and said, "Well, there's the Queen of New Westminster... she would have left Tsawwassen at 3:15, so I expect it's getting on towards four." I told her that she might know her birds, but I knew my ferries. I think she was impressed, and that we might be getting married soon.
On the other hand, she might have been thinking, "migawd, what a dweeb"... and we'll never see each other again.
Time will tell. You can only put your best foot forward, and see what happens.

I love being wrong. Well, actually, I prefer to be right, but being wrong can be kind of cool, unless you're the kind of numbskull who can't gain any insight from your mistakes and misguided impressions.
When I saw that Bernie Sanders was Hilary Clinton's only adversary of note in the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination, I thought... what a joke. Bernie; an unrepentant socialist, who, unlike Canada's much more evolved New Democrats, wasn't ashamed of the word. And we all know how reactionary and conservative those Americans are. They love their Cruzes and their Trumps, and a class warrior like Bernie would be little more than a curiosity, a minor speed bump in Hilary's cruise to the coronation. I figured he'd score maybe 25% in any of the primaries.
But yesterday, conservative and very white Iowa couldn't decide between Bernie and Hilary. Caucus participants were so divided that in some cases, coin tosses decided the 'winner'. And now it's on to New Hampshire, next door to Sanders' home state, and even more fertile ground for the curmudgeonly class warrior.
I have no doubt that in the final analysis, the Democrats will opt for the more traditional candidate. Hilary is bland, vaguely idealistic, and more electable. But if Bernie Sanders were to go up against a Cruz, Trump, or Rubio, it would no longer shock me to see him get 40-45% of the vote. Our neighbours (neighbors) to the south are more volatile and less doctrinaire than we sometimes overly judgemental Canadians think they are. The USA is a dynamic nation, and just when you think you've got them all figured out, a Bernie Sanders comes along to upset all the calculations.

Another primary, another episode of the Trump Circus. Watching his incredibly vacuous victory speech tonight, I thought that maybe Shaw Cable had substituted the World Wrestling Entertainment channel for CNN.
'The United States doesn't WIN anymore. When I'm President, we're going to WIN with our military, we're going to WIN with trade deals... NOBODY's GONNA MESS WITH US! We're gonna be so TOUGH! We're gonna build a BIG WALL on the border... NOBODY's gonna get drugs through... We're gonna get it DONE!'
The surreal episode needed Mean Gene Okerlund to step in and say, "Now Donald, how are you going to pay for your 1,933 mile wall along the Mexican border, and your colossal increase in the military budget?" Because, it doesn't seem that enough legitimate journalists and commentators- certainly not on CNN- have been taking this idiot to task for how he would finance his insane notions. Nor have they asked him in which parallel universe would Mexico ever agree to pay for his wall, which is one option he's offered. But what the heck... Trump's businesses have gone bankrupt four times- maybe he think's that's a business plan for the U.S. as well.
The greatest nation in the world, and the leading candidate for the Republican Party is talking to voters like they're wrestling fans. Pretty much made John Kasich's channelling of Fred Rogers ("slow down and hug your neighbors") sound like sensible politics. Yikes.
