Some time ago on this forum we had a discussion about the tradition of referring to ships & other water craft as being feminine (i.e. she, her, etc). I am not sure if that discussion can be found in the back pages of this very thread, or elsewhere. I do recall Neil playing a part in that discussion ... At anyrate, I thought that Neil & others might like to revisit the topic, but first you have to go to this, from CBC Radio
The age-old 'gender' debate will never go away. We, the people of the planet have tinkered with making changes to all sorts of things over the past decades and will continue to do so. What else are we to do over a coffee or one's favourite ale? Mariners of all stripes will continue to support the long-standing tradition of calling ships/vessels in the feminine tense. The historic reasoning is sound and compelling. Just as an aside, two tidbits of note. The newest U.S. Aircraft carrier is named the 'Gerald R. Ford and features a 'first' in carrier design as they have moved the tower to the rear starboard side of the vessel as opposed to about 3/4 from the bow on the same side. Now along comes the Brits with the HMS Queen Elizabeth with her command tower right upfront at the bow of the vessel. (Check out the noticeable upcurve of the deck as well). Obviously two very different design schemes from two very distinguished naval fleets. However, at the end of the day, those two new behemoths will be referred to as 'She's'. Sorry Gerry. (and we will have to extend a similar apology to the under construction carrier, the US John F Kennedy when she is commissioned in 2020). Yes, the late 35th President of the United States will also be referred to as 'She', when mariners speak in the vernacular of 'boats' of all descriptions.

Ford sees an enemy ship, will she engage it, or pardon it? When her planes are launched, will they stumble off the flight deck? Will the Russian navy have a ship named for Squeaky Fromme, to shoot at the Gerald R. Ford? So many questions...

The sky was blue when this purchased slide was taken in 1975 aboard a 1972 Jumboferry on a trip from Winslow to Seattle.
I might have been about the same age as that young fella, who must have loved red as his favorite (or "favourite" for you Canadians) color (or "colour"). That hairdo was the standard for most boys then, including me.
I was entering my 8th grade year at junior high for the 1975-1976 school year.
The then new Kingdome was nearly finished when this pic was taken. And, also, the creation of the delicious "King Dog"!

One of the most spectacular sights here in WA is this one. Mount Index towers a mile high above the Skykomish River.
This is along the Great Northern established rail line from Seattle to Glacier National Park and MN. The Seattle branch of the Empire Builder train line also passes this area and is along the US2 highway to Skykomish, Stevens Pass, Leavenworth, Wenatchee, Spokane, and beyond ...
From a purchased postcard.
This pic must have been taken during the summer.
Oh yes! The sky was mostly blue in this pic, in keeping with the title of this thread!!
Enjoy!

I am guessing that the protesters still have been their way. I was on Vesselfinder to find five ships at anchor in a couple of places waiting to get into the port of Vancouver. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Please correct me if I am wrong. What protesters are you referring to? The socializers in English Bay beaches who are refusing to comply with social-distancing requirements?

Everyone in Prince George panic-bought all the red string so I genuinely don’t follow.

I think you were being asked about your claim that the protests were funded by American interests, and there's nothing in the CBC story that corroborates that.

The rules: - Start with some vague item. - Only give more clarity when someone asks, but keep it vague in order to prolong the game. - If we get to 10 back-and-forths, it is declared a winning game. --------------- I will start one: "I can't see much out of my window because of that junk by that evil corporation."

I'm curious as to what members are seeing and hearing in their area at 7pm each evening.
I was a bit baffled at first when I heard people banging pots and making a bit of a racket in other ways. My first thought- illogical, I know, was that somehow, a cure or vaccine for this Covid 19 monster had been announced. My condo neighbour, one of the ruckus makers, told me it was in support of the front line workers, medical and otherwise.
I'm near the Peace Arch hospital in White Rock, and there is a good din every evening. I'm certainly onboard, now that I know what's going on. Tonight, ten police and emergency vehicles paraded down a nearby street, with sirens sounding.
I've also noticed, on my long walks, even more people just saying hello as you pass. These are troubling times, when maybe a lot of us are more cognizant of our own mortality. We're giving each other a wide berth... but in a way, there is an increased sense of community. 7pm highlights that.

We're giving each other a wide berth... but in a way, there is an increased sense of community. 7pm highlights that. I'm currently living in North Van, up near Grouse Mountain. 7pm gets good and loud here with lots of pots, pans and a vuvuzela horn (remember those from 10 years ago..?) so the 7pm cheers happens even in the sleepiest neighborhoods of upper North Van I am quite fortunate to have numerous trails to choose from. I live just steps away from Cleveland Dam however it tends to be busier with folks who drive up from the City. As a result, Most of the locals have also been staying away from Cleveland Dam and the rest of Capilano River Regional Park and I've been hiking the less traveled trails along the bottom of Grouse. Like yourself Neil, I've found more people saying hello as you pass by with heaps of room to spare.
