I dunno about making one thread for all service notices as that would cause alot of build-up of posts that do not constitute a discussion. We can set up a system that lets users find service notices faster, as well as News Releases.

That would be a good Idea

Ok, what's your plan?
The current system: Make a new thread for most ervice notices, lol.

I was thinking in terms of making the titles eg:"Service Notice: May Long Weekend"
I put more thought into this and I could see this idea being used for service notices because they are generally minor or temporary, so they won't generate much discussion, but for Press Releases I'd use a new thread for each one, because those involve bigger descisions with BCF, and generate more discussion.

Good plan.
...One thread per News Release is okay, unless the press releases are related.

Better yet, how about any new bulletins you put into one thread.

Boarding Passes Required on Northern Gulf Island Routes
Posted May 23, 2006
Starting on Monday, May 29, foot passengers on all Northern Islands routes will be provided with a boarding pass when paying their fare.
All foot passengers, including seniors and students, will be required to present their boarding pass in order to enable passage on the ferry.
The only exception will be students traveling on a designated school bus run.
Any foot passengers attempting to board without a boarding pass will be asked to return to the ticket booth to obtain one.
BC Ferries thanks our customers for their anticipated cooperation as we implement this improvement in boarding procedures.

"Boarding Passes Required on Northern Routes Posted May 23, 2006 Starting on Monday, May 29, foot passengers on all Northern Islands routes will be provided with a boarding pass when paying their fare." From BC Ferries Website, All Routes from Earls Cove-Saltery Bay all the way up to the Alert Bay route. hmm.. "Boarding Passes Required on Northern Routes" "...foot passengers on all Northern Islands routes" "From BC Ferries Website, All Routes from Earls Cove-Saltery Bay all the way up to the Alert Bay route" ...I think BCF needs to better distinguish between Northern and Northern Island routes by qualifying the latter as Northern Gulf Islands routes (I'm assuming that's what they mean), as Moresby and Graham Islands (QCI) also fall under the category "Northern Islands"; let alone the fact that the Port Hardy to Prince Rupert route originates on the island that they actually are talking about (VI), and yet is not one of the routes that the news-release is referring to.

Today's notices, From the BC Ferries Current Conditions PageBerth Two Closure - Extended Through JulyThe completion date for the new Berth Two at Swartz Bay Terminal has been extended through the end of July 2006. Additional work on the overhead passenger walkway is required before the berth can open. Berth Two has been closed since early January while the old berth structures and wingwalls were removed and a new floating berth was installed. The new berth will be the first of its kind for BC Ferries and will offer greater flexibility for vessels at Swartz Bay. From time to time the berth closure impacts Southern Gulf Island departures with the Mayne Queen, the Queen of Cumberland, and the Skeena Queen scheduled at Swartz Bay at similar times in the morning around 8:30 a.m. and again in the afternoon around 2:30 p.m. The BC Ferries crews work hard to minimize delays but these may still occur from time to time during the berth closure. Temporary Vessel Replacement on Crofton to VesuvisThe Howe Sound Queen on the Crofton to Vesuvius Bay route will be out of service for maintenance work from Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, 2006. During this mid-week period, the Bowen Queen will be the replacement vessel on the Salt Spring Island route. The Bowen Queen carries 70 vehicles, similar to the Howe Sound Queen, but with some additional restrictions for over height and over wide vehicles. In particular, commercial vehicles over 10 tonnes GVW (10,000 kg) are restricted to centre lane loading only on the Bowen Queen. The Howe Sound Queen is scheduled to return to service with the 8:00 a.m. sailing from Vesuvius Bay on Saturday, June 17. BC Ferries regrets any inconvenience to our customers during this temporary vessel replacement. Marine Evacuation System Deployment - June 6Skeena Queen and Howe Sound Queen On Tuesday, June 6 the life saving equipment on the Skeena Queen and the Howe Sound Queen will be tested. This safety check includes deployment of a marine evacuation system on each vessel and an exchange of rescue boats. The deployment on the Skeena Queen is scheduled for 9:35 a.m. This is expected to result in a 20 to 30 minute delay of the 9:50 a.m. sailing from Fulford Harbour to Swartz Bay. The deployment on the Howe Sound Queen is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. This is expected to result in a 20 to 30 minute delay of the 3:00 p.m. sailing from Vesuvius Bay to Crofton. The marine evacuation system deployment is part of an annual safety check and certification by Transport Canada. BC Ferries will work to ensure that any service delays for our Salt Spring Island customers are kept to a minimum.

Due to the high volume of traffic expected for this event, sailing waits are possible on this 10-minute run. Heavy traffic is expected for departures from Buckley Bay terminal to Denman West, starting with the 9:00 am sailing from Vancouver Island and continuing to about 3:00 pm on both days. Similar delays can also be expected for sailings departing Denman West over much of the same time period. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider traveling earlier in the day to avoid delays.

Today's Bulletins Extra Dangerous Cargo Sailing to Pender Island August 9As a dangerous cargo sailing to Pender Island will be missed over the August long weekend, an extra dangerous cargo sailing has been scheduled on Wednesday, August 9, 2006. As a result, the 5:15 a.m. August 9 departure of the Queen of Cumberland from Swartz Bay bound for Sturdies Bay, Galiano Island will carry dangerous cargo and stop at Otter Bay, Pender Island. This means that no other traffic will be permitted to board this sailing. As a result of the stop at Otter Bay, the Queen of Cumberland is expected to be delayed in arriving at Sturdies Bay. From Sturdies Bay the Queen of Cumberland will resume the regular Wednesday morning schedule. BC Ferries apologizes to our customers for any inconvenience these schedule changes may impose. Skeena Queen - Temporary Reduction of Passenger LicenceAfter deploying the marine evacuation system on the Skeena Queen, on Tuesday, June 6, the equipment must be checked and repacked before it can be installed on the vessel. This process is expected to be completed by the end of June. While the life saving equipment is being exchanged, the passenger licence for the Skeena Queen has been reduced to a total of 292 passengers and 8 crew. At peak sailing times, this may mean that passenger travel will be restricted. BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Skeena Queen to the maximum licence of 600 passengers and crew as soon as possible.

Bulletins for June 14th Possible DelaysTwo special functions will take place at Alert Bay over the upcoming weekend – June Sports Weekend for the public and a private family Naming Feast. Due to the high volume of traffic expected for these events, sailing waits are possible throughout most of the weekend, starting with the 8:45 am sailing from Port McNeill on Thursday, June 15 and continuing to the end of the service day on Sunday, June 18. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive at the terminal as early as possible to avoid delays. Langdale Berth Closure - June 20 OnlyBerth one at Langdale will be closed for a portion of the day on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, for maintenance so that crews can replace chains under the ramp. In order to avoid any delays on the morning commuter runs, the work will not begin until after the departure of the 8:20 a.m. sailing from Langdale terminal. For the remainder of the day, the Queen of Coquitlam will use berth two at Langdale. Delays may occur at peak times. Berth one is expected to re-open in time for the first sailing on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. BC Ferries thanks its customers for their patience during this necessary maintenance work. Boarding Passes for Foot Passengers at LangdaleBC Ferries has ordered two ticket dispensers for installation at the Langdale terminal that will issue boarding passes to foot passengers. In the near future, foot passengers at this location will obtain a boarding pass from one of the machines, which will be located near the passenger shelters on each side of the main ramp at berth one. When walking onto the vessel, the customer will be asked to present their boarding pass to terminal staff on the ramp. Any foot passenger without a boarding pass will be asked to return to the ticket machines to obtain one. All large organized foot passenger groups are asked to advise a Terminal Attendant of the total number in their party to be added to the foot passenger count, instead of using the new machines. This new system is designed to improve the accuracy of foot passenger counts. BC Ferries thanks its customers for their cooperation on this important safety initiative.

If this goes over well, they will appear at Tsawwassen, then Swartz Bay, then Horseshoe Bay, then Departure Bay,and then quite possibly Duke Point, in that order, lol.

Isn't that the same system they use on the Major routes anyway? The only difference I'm seeing now, is that you have to get the ticket yourself....Why can't the ticket booth cashier do that, like the rest of the terminals?

Langdale is pretty much the only terminal where you don't pay, correct? Sounds to me like this whole passenger ticket thing is in response to the Queen of the North incident where they didn't have a good passenger count. If the ship goes down, they need an accurate count.

you don't pay at many terminals.. all SGI terminals on route 5 returning to SB, all routes from SSI to the Island, Earls Cove in Jervis Inlet, etc, etc

It all depends which direction you're going. If you're coming from the Sunshine Coast to the Ferry, you have to pay, and then all you have to do is show your ticket when going back into Horseshoe Bay. Then Vice Versa.
