Route: Queen Charlotte IslandsArrive Early to Check InPosted June 22, 2006 All passengers traveling between the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Mainland are requested to arrive at the terminal well ahead of their scheduled departure time, as follows: · RECOMMENDED CHECK IN TIME for sailings is 90 – 120 minutes in advance of the sailing. Reservations not claimed 60 minutes before sailing time will be cancelled in order to accommodate stand-by traffic. · Stand-by passengers and commercial traffic should arrive 2 hours ahead of their scheduled sailing. Early arrival will help ensure ticketing staff have sufficient time to efficiently process all waiting passengers, as well as assist with maintaining scheduled departure times. Passengers are reminded that due to the reduced passenger level currently in effect, to guarantee space availability, it is strongly recommended reservations be made as far as possible in advance of travel. With increasing demand, passenger space this summer may be limited on certain sailings. Reservations are available online at www.bcferries.com, or by calling Prince Rupert Terminal at (250) 624-9627, Skidegate Terminal at (250) 559-4485 or toll free 1-888-223-3779 between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm. BC Ferries thanks our customers for assisting our staff to provide reliable and on-time service. Route: Queen Charlotte Islands Travel Assistance ProgramPosted June 22, 2006 Ticketing Guidelines Customers traveling on the Ministry of Health’s Travel Assistance Program (TAP) are asked to follow these guidelines to help ensure ticketing staff have sufficient time to efficiently process all waiting passengers: · Plan ahead - processing TAPs requires more time than regular ticketing. Although each pink TAP form takes a short time to process, up to 200 (some involving as many as 8 segments) are done each month at Skidegate terminal. · For quick service with minimal lineups, customers are strongly encouraged to take advantage of non-QPR sailing days to process the pink TAP vouchers. · Alternately, passengers can drop by the terminal days or weeks prior to the actual travel date to redeem the pink TAP voucher. · To avoid the risk of missing their planned sailing, customers redeeming pink TAP forms on the day of travel must arrive at the ticket booth at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure. Full cooperation with these guidelines can reduce unnecessary delays during busy times prior to sailing and will be greatly appreciated. Route: Langdale-Gambier-KeatsUsing Cargo CartsPosted June 22, 2006 Cargo carts are available at Langdale terminal for the convenience of all passengers crossing between Gambier Island and Keats Island. Passengers are required to return cargo carts to the top of the gangway when no longer needed, so that everyone can have full access to their use. BC Ferries appreciates your cooperation in helping ensure that cargo carts will be available for all Langdale Terminal customers who require one.

Updates for Friday, June 23rd Route: Gambier-Langdale-Keats
Fare to Change with GST ReductionPosted June 23, 2006 Effective July 1, 2006, the Government of Canada is reducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 7% to 6%. As GST is included in the tariffs for the Gambier/Keats route, BC Ferries will be adjusting our fares to reflect the new GST rate. Beginning July 1, 2006, Peak season fares for the Stormaway III will reduce to: · $4.65 for Adult passage (currently $4.70) · $30.70 for a book of pre-paid discount commuter tickets (currently $31.00). Route: Swartz Bay-Southern Gulf Islands
Platform Decks on the Queen of CumberlandPosted June 23, 2006 With the busy summer season approaching, BC Ferries reminds customers on the Swartz Bay to Southern Gulf Islands route that the platform decks on the Queen of Cumberland are frequently required to carry additional traffic. The platform decks provide more capacity and flexibility for the crew when loading the vessel for multiple ports. The main car deck of the Queen of Cumberland has a capacity of 85 vehicles, while the platform decks on each side of the vessel provide space for an additional 20 cars, for a total capacity of 125 vehicles. As deploying, loading and unloading the platform decks takes extra time, the crew only use the platform decks when necessary to carry the anticipated traffic and to prevent leaving cars and commercial traffic behind. When directed to load on the platform decks, you are assisting BC Ferries to carry residents, visitors and goods and services to and from the Southern Gulf Islands. Your cooperation is appreciated

Here's something that Kyle figured-out for us a while ago....enjoy the cheesy headline from the BCFS Website: ======================================== For some reason we always get called for ‘travelling’.As a proud sponsor, our late night “Nash Express” sailing is just one more way BC Ferries helps coastal communities celebrate life on the coast. BC Ferries has added an additional late night sailing to accommodate Vancouver Island residents attending the Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic at GM Place Stadium in Vancouver on Saturday July 22nd. The “Nash Express” will depart Tsawwassen at 11:30 pm July 22nd enroute to Swartz Bay. The additional sailing is not limited to event ticket holders, but demand is expected to be high and reservations are encouraged. Regular fares, applicable surcharges and normal reservations fees apply. Tickets for the Game: Passengers may purchase an event package that includes game tickets, bus and ferry by calling “Be a Fan” at 250-472-NASH (6274) or toll-free at 1-866-537-9769. Information is also available at the "Be a Fan" website at www.beafan.com or visit the kiosk at the Tillicum Mall in Victoria. Individual event tickets may be purchased through TicketMaster at 604-280-4444 and online at

Thanks, Fluge
What the hell, "For some reason we always get called for ‘travelling’."
And, umm, the Nash Express? Time to fire you marketing department, BCFS. I think a four-year-old could think up a better name then that.

Steve Nash, is an NBA player for the Phoenix Suns (spelling?). He grew up in Victoria, and is quite popular on this side of the Country, due to his stong Canadian ties here. He's coming back up here to do some sort of Fundraiser I believe, at GM place. I forgot what it's about though.

I just might be, heh. I'm looking for a good enough reason to get to the island that day.

Steve Nash also won the NBA's MVP award (twice now?), hence his surge in popularity.

I spotted this in Sunday's Province and it made me chuckle.
Nelly Furtado was also in town this weekend. She was the emcee for the Steve Nash event. (For those who don't know the name, Nelly Furtado just released her third pop CD and she hails from Victoria as well.)
One of the questions the Province reporter asked her was: What's the best way to kill time on the ferry?
"Feeding the seagulls on the deck is probably the best. Eating good ol' ferry dogs. The scrambled eggs with hollandaise sauce."
Well, she's a big star now! My guess is she hasn't ridden the Victoria ferry in a while!

Ramp Painting Closures
Posted July 28, 2006
July 29 & 30
Alliford Bay-Skidegate - MV Kwuna
Maintenance work is currently underway to paint the deck of the MV Kwuna and main vessel boarding ramps. It has been possible to carry out most of this work with minimal interruption to traffic.
To complete this project, it will now be necessary to take one of the ramps out of service each day for wash down and painting.
During these ramp closure periods, passengers will need to back their vehicle onto the ship at the beginning of their trip.
Drivers of over-sized vehicles or vehicles towing trailers are STRONGLY encouraged to travel prior to these ramp closure periods.
Ramp closures will occur at the following times:
· Saturday, July 29, from 9:00 pm to 10:30 pm
· Sunday, July 30, from 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm
Although some delays may be possible depending on traffic conditions, the MV Kwuna will remain fully operational throughout the maintenance period.
BC Ferries thanks our customers for their cooperation and patience as we complete this necessary ramp maintenance.

Bulletin 1
Boarding Passes for Foot Passengers at Langdale Posted July 28, 2006
BC Ferries has installed two ticket dispensers at the Langdale terminal that issue boarding passes to foot passengers.
Foot passengers at this location will now obtain a boarding pass from one of the machines prior to boarding the ship. These dispensers are located near the passenger shelters on each side of the main ramp at berth one.
When walking onto the vessel, customers are asked to present their boarding pass to terminal staff on the ramp. Any foot passenger without a boarding pass will be asked to return to the ticket machines to obtain one.
All large organized foot passenger groups are asked to advise a Terminal Attendant of the total number in their party to be added to the foot passenger count, instead of using the new machines.
This new system is designed to improve the accuracy of foot passenger counts. BC Ferries thanks its customers for their cooperation on this important safety initiative.

Here's a picture of the boarding pass machine at Langdale. The Terminal attendants were asking every foot passenger individually to grab a pass from the machine. It doesn't make any sense to me....anyone could grab a pass, and walk on now.....

That is correct. People from the Sunshine Coast travel free to the Mainland. People from the Mainland pay for one of two two-way fares; one fare is for Horseshoe Bay-Langdale AND return; the other one is for Horseshoe Bay-Langdale AND Earls Cove-Saltery Bay. There are no toll booths on the lower Sunshine Coast...just at Horseshoe Bay and Saltery Bay.
