If his alarm didn't go off you would think he still would have made the 10:15 sailing. If it is health related they won't be able to say much due to privacy. If he simply screwed up his days off then he probably will get some disciplinary action. We probably won't hear anything further on this.

When you get people involved, sometimes this happens. It's just that a captain is rather more noticeable than a deckhand. If said captain has an otherwise flawless attendance record, I suspect an admonition will be the end of it.
OTOH, if the captain had a health issue and was rushed to the hospital, there may not have been time to notify BCF to come up with a replacement.
So, hergfest, probably not an automatic firing.

Someone is losing their job. not if the bc ferries and marine union ships officers component has there say. the union will be backing this captain when it comes to any discipline

Just curious: Does anyone know if he/she was actually properly assigned to the shift, or didn't show because the crewing assignment wasn't made properly? That happens at times, I gather.

Most Captains aren't Union. " About half," would make the non-Union other most...

Well, 'most' implies a significant majority, rather than the strict linguistic sense...
...that having been said, I can easily state what percentage of WSF's officers are union. ;D
