I just noticed that BC Ferries has added the Crofton-Vesuvius run to their vessel tracking page. It appears on the same page as the Swartz Bay-SGI ferries: Swartz Bay - SGI page hereNow that I take a closer look at the page, it shows the Bowen Queen's destination is Swartz Bay. I guess the big question is whether it's on there because it's moving to Route 5 tomorrow (Tuesday), and if so, will the HSQ have vessel tracking when it returns to service tomorrow? We'll find out in due time.

In the future, I think that BC Ferries should have a tracking system for all the routes.
Do any of you guys think this will happen in the future?

I Think this will gradually and slowly happen as that is what they said on their website and seeing as the new ships keep coming they will have to have it on for their website. So like the island sky will have it so we will see the earls cove saltery bay route. I don't know though about the smaller routes though. Anywho, lets hope so.

i beleive the smaller routes will have it as well. Though it will take time. All BC Ferries vessels have GPS trackers, they just must be sent back to the office to be added to the web site. We see smaller vessels like Nimpkish and Kwuna have it now to.

Well just to let you all know, the Crofton-Vesuvius is not added to the vessel tracking system page yet.

Anyone notice that the BCFerries main page has a new header now?
It's a rather overcast picture of the CR with a fairly creative new slogan.

Hmmmm... I thought I'd still seen the banner with the Spirits more recently than that.
That must have been posted on one of the days I was offline.

Do I sense someone drawing attentions to something? In answer to your and QoN Teen, yes. I think that they will add the longer routes first, certainly (the 2 Powell River ones would be excellent candidates), and also Gabriola, simply because these, in my mind, meet some random formula of length vs. ridership.

RBI has now been set up for the summer months. I checked route 1 and is says that the Queens of Vancouver & Saanich will continue in service until after Labour Day. Now we all know that what it says on RBI is not written in stone, but???
I have been led to believe that the Queen of New Westminster will replace the Vancouver before July 1st, and that the Coastal Celibacy will be in service (replacing the Saanich) at about the same time or at least by mid July. Does anyone have any new information on this?

It's also a very good method of tracking usage. I imagine on the sign up form there is a place for occupation and other personal information. Since BCF doesn't collect names or anything on payment of fares, this would be a good opportunity to see who (as in what demographic) travels when and on which routes.
Just like the grocery store club cards like Safeway and Save On have, it gives the company information about how people shop and travel.

I can see this card being useful for people who like me don't have credit cards. It is a pain when you have to carry a ton of cash just to get on the ferry and buy some food. It would be much more convenient to load at home and go sailing the next day or so.
Cheers,

Other than unspecified savings, I don't really see any benefit to this card. Of course BC Ferries gets the benefit of getting your money now rather than later... Maybe the only benefit is the same as with any prepaid-card: - If you're a parent or untrusting spouse, or something similar, and you're paying for someone else's travel costs..... and if you want to ensure that they don't waste the money on buying beer or lottery tickets instead, then you can use such a card to ensure that the only thing that the person can spend this $$ on is ferry items. Parents likely do the same thing with Subway restaurant cards, to pay for their kid's lunches, etc. I suppose that some companies could use this too, for employee travel. It helps to reduce the risk of employee fraud on the travel expense claims....

In terms of employee travel and what not, it has the benefit of having STATEMENTS too, so tracking is easier. Not everyone wants to sign up for a BCFS Travel Card or BCFS Commercial Travel Card (TC and CTC respectively). I have them for my business, and they have to do a credit check, and I have to allow them to do pre-authorized payments out of my business chequing account. So these new cards are a way around that .... think "pay as you go" cellular versus being on a plan -- that is the best way that I can help you compare these offerings!

Anybody notice the revamped appearance of the BC Ferries Website? Things look a wee bit different now. . .not on every page yet though.
Did they have a trip planner on their home page before. . .or is that new??

I saw the website and the trip planner is new. You call also create an account to access "myBCFerries" and get notifications regarding sailings, special offers, etc via e-mail.

I like how the travel planner asks for reason of travel. You can select personal or social, vacation, business, commercial, group or travel agent. I don't the point in this because who cares why you are traveling. I hope this isn't a look into the future of ads for BCFS.
"Sail with BCFS, the awesomest company for (insert above choice)."
By the way there isn't a ferry geek option. ;D

BTW - with the new BCFS website, I just signed up for a myBCFerries account... all it's really good for is service notice alerts to your e-mail and choosing your favourite route.
