The only thing making that galley "smaller" than the others (aside from the crew's quarters directly behind the photographer, of course) is the little half-wall corralling it off. The tables really aren't any smaller than the other three. It's more a question of the cabin itself. The fact that the Klick's cabin terminates in a steel bulkhead rather then the open observation room leads it to feeling more cramped and enclosed. I would actually be welling to bet that the galley is smaller a bit on the Klick than the other three--it certain has 0 style and none of the flourishes of the other three Steel E's, however minor they may be.

Incidentally, here's a photo of the original galley on the Nisqually. All the Steel Electrics looked like this when they came up from San Francisco. My understanding is the area that you can't see in the photos had tables to sit down at. (Photos is from the Joe Williamson collection, courtesy of PSMHS.)

I've seen that picture, and it's my understanding that the galleys were modified extensively in the late 50s during the first refurb. I still haven't completely ascertained the angle of this photo but comparing it to photos of the rest of the cabin to see which way the ceiling beams were positioned, it appears to be looking fore-and-aft--with the door in the background possibly leading to the breezeway before the center section of the cabin was enclosed. Any takers?

On the subject of the (50's) galley rehabs on the steel-electrics, were the seating areas on the Klickitat and Illahee closed off when the galley was closed (like the Nisqually and Quinault)?

So how many routes does CDX provide food service now? I would bet that they become the sole provider of galley service for the ferry system in the not too distant future.

Right now just the Mukilteo/Clinton and Pt. Townsend/Keystone routes. WSF is trying to get them to take over the Vashon route, but I don't know if they will or not.

With galleys closed for the winter on the San Juan Islands routes, and closed on the Vashon/Southworth runs, it is beginning to look like little has been done to solve this "mess." It looks like WSF management needs to do more and assist vendors trying to restore service. Certainly we don't need a full four star meal service, but having hot coffee and a snack available would do wonders for public relations! ps: one plus.....good to see galley service restored on the Keystone/Port Townsend ferry .

WSF upper management is rather stupid for doing this. Just because of one little thing, you cancel a contract when you did not stick up to your end either. Now the system will lose revenue due to their actions. What can I say? "back to square one" in a sense.

WSF had nothing to do with closing the galleys in the San Juans. That was entirely the decision of Olympic-Cascade foods.

Boy this galley mess sure seems to continue. I think a clear and concise policy needs to be adopted, system-wide, so costs will be kept within a budget and ease of service for customers can be restored. If that means going back to a single vendor system, then so be it. Nothing says higher costs and lack of continuity like having multiple vendors providing food service!

Amen! You can thank Mike Thorne for that one. He achieved his mission: cut costs.
What nobody seemed to notice is that he left the next watch holding the bag. The damage inflicted by Thorne, who went out of his way to avoid learning about the WSF culture, will take years--possibly more than a decade--to undo.

OC started in May 2005 (they started service on the Bainbridge route first, then started the other routes after that). Sound Foods almost ended service at the end of 2005.

From what I overheard in a conversation on the bus this morning, food service on the Vashon route will be restarted in April. CDX will be handling it.

According to the January/February issue of Sound Crossings, food service on the Vashon run is scheduled to restart very soon (mid-February).

Food service is back on the Vashon route now. WSF didn't even bother to mention this on their website (I only found about it when the announcement was made on the Kitsap this morning). That Vashon Loop article says that they did not rehire Charlie...Everybody who rode the ISSAQUAH on weekday evenings knows Charlie...he is a great guy.
