This book is on sale at the Visitors Center in Goldstream Provincial Park for $39.95, if anyone wants it. It's used, but one could barely tell. It's called 'The Good Company: An affectionate History of the Union Steamships' Run and get it before it's gone!

I visited Bygone Books in Nanaimo (downtown, across from the museum) today. Using some holiday gift money, I purchased some hardcovers that I'd had my eyes on for some time. 2 ship books and 1 railway book. (apparently, Mr. Turner is now living on Protection Island) - Here's a book that's been cited on this forum during "what was that ship?" posts. ============== And the railway book that I'm now very happy to own.

Those are very nice additions to your collection Mr. Horn. I am sure this will lead to some great winter reading/browsing.
Re the Nicholas Morant volume - I have, courtesy of my brother Mr. DOT, a copy of the companion volume, Nicolas Morant's Canada, also by JF Garden. I would love to own the CP volume as well and some day I will find a copy.
The evocative cover photo is taken at Partridge siding, located just above (east) of the upper Spiral Tunnel in BC's Yoho National Park. In the distance and far below you can see the Kicking Horse River valley where the railway descends to via the two spiral tunnels. The photo was no doubt taken just a few years before the diesel locomotives pushed the steamers out of the Canadian Rockies. No doubt the book is full of similarly tantalizing photos.

($50 price, less 20% for their January sale). - I've seen it before at $80 though. And the Turner "Pacific Empresses" book had multiple copies at the store, from $40, to $50, to $80 for the best condition signed copy. - I took the $40 copy, and paid $32 after the sale-discount. My other book today was $40 (less 20% = $32) also. Expensive, but ok for an occasional special purchase. I paid $75 last year for a good-condition hardback of "Union Steamships Remembered", by Art Twigg. I'm getting my money's worth on that one; it's a great read and is part of my collection.

It's in really good condition, and if I'm not mistaken, the book is out of print. My grandfather has the Pacific Empresses in hard cover. He has said that I'm welcome to borrow any of his books. I'm currently borrowing his copies of Ferryboats: A Legend on Puget Sound and Those Beautiful Coastal Liners. Both are very interesting.

BryanK mentioned this book about three years ago, and I picked it up yesterday from Black Sheep Books (formerly Sabine's) in Ganges. I thoroughly recommend it. There hasn't been enough writing about the role ferries play in our lives. The book focuses on Washington, but there are some pieces on BC and Alaska, including a great little description of loading cars onto the Atrevida. Good writing, and a refreshing emphasis on stories around and about ferries, as opposed to facts and figures and dates. Published by Hancock House; listed on Amazon, though unavailable. Available used through Chapters/Indigo.

All of them are slightly different in the stories they contain...there seem to be some that appear in each edition, and some are taken out while others added in. It is a fun book, however, and at least one of the editions gave a nice breakdown on the different livery of Black Ball, KCTC and of course WSF. I seem to recall it was a story on the might Vashon...which wore all three at some point in her career.

:)I don't think I'll be breaking my neck to get my hands on this one, but the best overall CPR marine history on my shelves is George Musk's definitive work Canadian Pacific, and of course the Turner trilogy of books, and Hacking & Lamb, and there are many others including many good old Superior titles done years ago in Seattle, which covered all the fleets of our Pacific Northwest. :)mrdot.

Looks like Flugel got all the best books on the history of Canadian Pacific services. I recently picked up a small book with some ferries info in it, The Maple Leaf Afloat, Vol II (Cordillera, 1993), by HEAL, S.C. Author info can be found at www.abcbookworld.com/view_author.php?id=1391

2 more books added to my collection today, from Bygone Books in Nanaimo. --------------- Gerald Rushton's "Echoes of the Whistle" is a 1980 follow-up to his earlier "Whistle up the Inlet". - At first glance, it appears to be similar to how Robert Turner's "Those Beautiful Coastal Liners" is a follow-up book done more as a picture book. Same concept. ----------- From the Superior label, is Richard Benson's 1968 "Steamships and Motorships of the West Coast". - there's a section on ferries with plenty of photos of San Francisco, Puget Sound and BC Ferries.

Flugel, I've had that book for a couple years, already. It has a twin called West Coast Windjammers, I believe. I've always debated how valuable it is to a ferries fan, though, as the actual ferries content is quite limited.

The S. C. Heal book "Ferries West" is available at the Burnaby Library call number 89528384, or at least it will be when I finish reading it and taking it back I thought others like me that are on a tight budget would like to know of a cheap way to get a "Ferry Fix"!

Some more show-&-tell. Today's purchases from Bygone Books in Nanaimo (20%-off sale, between now and when he closes or sells his business near end of 2011). ------------ A 2 part booklet series by Art Downs, published in 1967 & 1971. ------------------- A 100-page photo book enticing readers to visit Alaska and of course use AMHS. - from 1995. --------------- Crossing-genres from ferries to tugs. - here's the pen-name "S.C.Heal" and 2 of the books in his series. -------------

Wow! Someone is really cleaning up with the ferry books! I see that you are also now going for paddlewheelers as well, Flugel. That's a really impressive find, and the cover art on those two is very attractive. S.C. also seems to be a very prolific author from what I have seen, and has some very apropos book titles.
I have an edition of that Art Downs series that has both volumes in one book and covers the whole of the territory operated by sternwheelers and paddlewheelers in BC and the Yukon, etc. Do either of your books have the picture showing the SS Minto's viking funeral?
It's actually disheartening to hear that a good used book store might be closing. I nominate you to buy the business from him, Flug.

The Minto's "Viking Funeral" is shown on the back cover of Volume 2. I'm looking forward to expanding my BC ship knowledge, doing some summer reading (I have a backlog of books to read....) The store still has the $125 copy of BC Rail (the line called BC Rail....) history. I'm not sure of the title, but it's hardcover and has lots of nice photos. - I'm not knowledgeable enough (or interested enough) in the BC Rail Line to get value of this book. yet....
