He posted that before Scott posted what May's theme was. I thought flugel was referring to what would really be June's flagship theme. I got confused there... Happens to the best of us. As for June's theme, it's really up to whichever moderator's turn it is to pick the theme. We'll have to wait and see.

If you follow the trend of previous flagships, you will find out that it is Mike's (lol)! As Flugel Horn mentioned earlier, the theme will be "ferry visible though another ferry's car-deck tunnel".

For those hoping to get a head-start on the next flagship photo contest, my guess is that it might be something like "Ferry seating shot from floor level". - in other words, it's Scott's turn. Stay tuned.... I posted this as a joke, not knowing what Scott would chose, and considering one of his signature styles. So by huge coincidence, it is the official "next flagship theme", the one that we nominate for during April and then see displayed during May. I'm not sure what Scott thinks of the coincidence, but I think it was pretty funny. But a true coincidence nonetheless. As for me, I will check my schedule to see if it is me during the following month, and then I'll try to find a good theme.

That was the theme for December, 2012. The car deck was the theme for October, 2011, and similar to next month's theme, we had a passenger cabin theme for December, 2009. Take a look at all the past flagship themes sometime. It's pretty interesting, and it will inform you as to what we have done in the past.

Well I guess when this is the flagship theme again in a few years, then I'll have more than enough pics to choose from. Only recently have I had a camera that takes really good pictures, so I didn't have a whole lot of pictures to choose from.

For those who submit flagship nominations and use PhotoBucket as a host, you will need to use a different host.
Here's an explanation from our forum expert on the matter:
------------
ps: In case you were wondering, the above issue is the reason why some of this month's winning banners are showing up as "narrow." This is just temporary, until we can get those winning shots hosted by a different site.

Here's an explanation from our forum expert on the matter: That sounds like Flickr, if you don't have a Pro account. That includes me, but Flickr just gave everyone Pro for free when they redid their website, so I can actually view them at full size. Prior to that I was using Panoramio for the forum flagship shots. So, for those of you who don't want to pay for Pro membership on Flickr, you can upload your flagship nominations to Panoramio and view them at full size for free.

Just curious for those who participate in the Flagship nominations:
Are you happy with the mix of "traditional whole ship" and "Specific parts of ship" themes that we've been choosing, as of late?
I know that the specific-part style of themes might irk those who don't have that style of photos readily available (ie. the life-ring, or passenger seating themes), but the presumption is that some people won't get a full 3-nominations every single time, and that's ok. Those specific-part themes are good for variety.
And just to ask, I'm wanting to make sure that all the regular nominators are ok with the idea that you won't always find 3 good nominations for every theme that we present. ie. sometimes you'll be challenged to find 1 or 2 good nominations from your collection. I'm hoping that we're all ok with that, and there's no expectations that people need to "win every time".
Are we all having fun with this?
.... I'm still having fun.

I think we should do a flagship of vessels on unusual routes, such as the Klahowya in the San Juans or the Cathlamet at Bremerton.

Maybe we should wait to do that one after Island Sky does her stint on the temporary Saltery Bay-Departure Bay route to give BC Ferries fans something interesting to post.

I have a couple of suggestions for monthly 'themes' for upcoming months.
One would be ferries seen in our often dreary seascapes that we get over the fall & winter months. In other words sunny pics not allowed; they must be bleak.
The second would be ferries with industrial backgrounds such as with the Harmac pulp mill or the DeltaPort operations as a back drop.

Another idea for a flagship theme, inspired by a conversation between Neil & Mr. Horn over on the Southern Gulf Island Terminals thread: Mr Horn's photos demonstrate that this seasonal fog thing, although kind of boring to live through on a day to day basis, really does provide some worthwhile photographic opportunities that we could take advantage of for each boat, and each route. 'Shipspotters' would disagree, of course. What do they know about art. Fog definitely provides a unique visual opportunity, for photography and regular eyesight observation. The normal views are gone, the objects quickly disappear and then appear. Similar to the navigators, the passenger-observers use memory to tell themselves where they think they are, and are sometimes surprised to find out that they are not quite where they thought they were. And there's no pesky mid-day sun to washout a photo. Just a nice solid grey/white background. Have we done a 'fog' theme for the monthly flagship 'contest'? If not, I think that this would be a great idea.

Just a long-term heads-up: The January 2014 flagship (nominations done during the month of December 2013) will be my choice. My choice is likely going to be something like "Jack-O-Lantern Ferry." ie. a photo that shows the ferry lit-up, with yellowish interior light appearing from her windows or car deck opening. Something like what Scott did in this photo: In October 2012, we did a theme called "Dusk to Dawn" where the criteria was time based, ie. photo taken between dusk & dawn. My idea is different (although distantly related) because my focus will be on the jack-o-lantern look of the ship. ie. Banners for my month will need to prominently show the yellowish light glow from the windows and/or car deck opening. - and not a ship far far off in the distance, but a photo where this yellowish-glow effect is prominent. - and not just from a few windows or openings. The yellowish/orange glow needs to be prominent (I can foresee needing to copy/paste a dictionary definition of that word) And yes, some camera settings can turn that yellow-glow into a white light, but I really want the yellow/orange kind of colour. Here's another example: Mike's current signature: Yellow with a hint of orange. I like it. ================= The October 2012 Dusk-to-Dawn ballot is HEREOf the various photos on that ballot, the ones that would fit my Yellow Jack-o-Lantern criteria would be: 3 - great example 5 - barely qualifies, but there is some yellow from car deck opening. A full on side shot would be better (this photo was a dusk to dawn winner, so it wouldn't be eligible for my yellow category anyways) 10 - qualifies, but ferry should be larger & more prominent 12 - good 17 - nice yellow in the forward area of NorEx. (this photo was a dusk to dawn winner, so it wouldn't be eligible for my yellow category anyways) 21 - qualifies, but ferry should be larger & more prominent 24 - good with lots of yellow at the bow. But ferry could be larger. (so that's 7 photos out of 29) So you can see that this theme of mine is a picky & specific subset of the general theme of low-light & night photos. The prominent yellowish-light is a category unto its own. Not a duplication. The more yellowish-light that can be prominently seen, the better. =============== So there's some long term planning advice for those who like to participate in these exercises. I won't do a switcheroo on you. Hopefully these visual examples help you to understand what I'll be looking for during December. Don't try to force an otherwise good night photo into this criteria. It needs to be an obvious qualifier re the prominent areas of yellow (or with a hint of orange) interior light glow.

The next version of ProBoards will have a new feature for polls, where we can set certain ballot-items with a negative-start (ie. Flagship nomination #2 will start with negative-5 votes).
We'll use this for any nominations received on the last day of the month.

I would like to re-submit an idea I had a few years ago. Separated Sisters. A shot with 2 vessels that came out of the yard the same way, but have been stretched, lifted, or otherwise modified as to have very different profiles in the picture.

A shot with 2 vessels that came out of the yard the same way, but have been stretched, lifted, or otherwise modified as to have very different profiles in the picture. I'm trying to think of some west coast examples for this: - Taku versus Malaspina/Matanuska - Queen of New Westminster versus Burnaby/Nanaimo - Powell River Queen versus Bowen/Mayne Are there any other examples, and how likely are there to be photo opportunities for those examples?
