The SSA has updated its site with new photos of the MV WOODS HOLE being built. Most of the major modules have been welded into place. Three images are shown on this thread. The rest can be viewed at: www.steamshipauthority.com/news/118-m_v_woods_hole_ferry_construction_projectBased on the timeline mentioned in SSA's meeting minutes, the WOODS HOLE should be on her way and delivered to her home in MA before the new BCF SALISH ORCA starts her journey across the Atlantic to British Columbia. Both to occur in 2016. It's anticipated that the WOODS HOLE is to commence service on the Vineyard run this next upcoming summer schedule. With the passenger ferries ISLAND HOME and MARTHA'S VINEYARD and commercial ferries WOODS HOLE and GOVERNOR in service in the summer of 2016, it may be the first time that there will be "drive through" service on ALL sailings on the Vineyard run. "Drive through" means that you drive your vehicle from one end of the ferry to the other end without backing on (like what you have to do aboard the commercial vessels SANKATY, KATAMA, and GAY HEAD) or turning around. This should make the commercial customers happy.

The new 'Woods Hole' is a nice looking vessel and appears to be of a size/capacity that might make a vessel of similar dimensions appropriate for route 11, or miracle of miracles, a rejuvenation of route 40?

Nice looking ferry. Woods Hole will be a good addition to the SSA fleet.

For those who are interested in the progress of the delivery voyage of the new MV WOODS HOLE, here she was as of 0001PDT, Friday, June 3, 2016: She was off Miami FL heading north along the USA's Atlantic coastlines to the SSA's Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Center. Prior to beginning the crossing the gulf on Tuesday, she spent a few days at Port Fourchon LA after leaving Morgan City LA. This afternoon, Sunday, June 5, as of 1730PDT (2030EDT): She has passed by Long Island and is heading to her new home in MA. She took the outside route.

At 0325PDT (0625EDT), the SSA's new MV WOODS HOLE arrived at VMC Fairhaven MA. The WOODS HOLE is made fast with the company's Nantucket ferry EAGLE. The WOODS HOLE met a few ships with interesting names. EVERGREEN STATE (not the one our WSF retired, this one is a tanker), a sailing ship named FREE RANGE CHICKEN, and a tug named COHO. In the upcoming days, news stories about this ferry will likely appear in the MV Gazette, MV Times, the SSA's news pages and fleet list, et al. I'll let you all go to these sites to get stories and photos at your leisure. WELCOME HOME, MV WOODS HOLE!

The SSA's summer season has begun and a new chapter at Martha's Vineyard has been ushered in. I'm not a historian of MV services. But, this may be the first summer that "drive through" (no backing on or backing off) service has been in full force on the Vineyard routes. The new WOODS HOLE began service on Friday, June 17, 2016. She, the ISLAND HOME, the GOVERNOR, and the MARTHA'S VINEYARD all have "drive through" main decks. This also ushers in restored buff funnels aboard the ferries of SSA. Some of the ferries have them now. I've pieced together "Chappy Ferry"'s Facebook entry of this showing the ISLAND HOME's bleached funnel finally painted!: And, from this Facebook page: scontent-lax3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/13418399_611730108996514_187621233478726639_o.jpgLooks great! Now, I wish her western sisters CHETZEMOKA, SALISH, and KENNEWICK could get buff funnels as well.

Well, here we go again!First, the MV GOVERNOR gave the MV ISLAND HOME a dent. Now, the GOVERNOR strikes again. This time, the victim is the MV MARTHA'S VINEYARD. Steering gear failure. One would ask if the GOVERNOR still has her original 1954 steering system? She was built with an external rudder tiller like what many ferries on San Francisco Bay and San Diego Bay had. Here's the story: vineyardgazette.com/news/2016/07/06/ferry-governor-collides-marthas-vineyard-no-injuries

My biases might be showing here, but I wonder if really the underlying problem is that a marine transit system is trying to operate without public subsidy. I know, the Steamship Authority has been doing it for decades... but aren't corners being cut and maintenance deferred because there is the requirement that all costs have to be covered by fares, or by local taxpayers being billed, in the case of a deficit? I suppose an argument could be made that anyone wealthy enough to be living in Martha's Vineyard should be able to bear the full brunt of their transportation costs, but some might make the same judgement about Bowen Island, where the average income is above the British Columbia provincial average. Buses go everywhere, all over North America, into communities rich and poor. Somehow, with marine transit systems, we have a different mindset. I've never understood it.

Neil, Not really the case here this is one boat that just had MLU done and the other main one with Problems is still new. If anything it is shoddy workmanship on the boats. www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967968972/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967969232/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967969472/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/28139627038/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/28139627278/in/dateposted-public/

If you didn't know this by now, the Woods Hole ferry terminal is getting a major renovation. They have removed the old terminal building enabling us to see virtually the entire vessel in the main slip from this live streaming webcam. This image was captured this morning.
The 255 foot ISLAND HOME is looking good with her black topped buff funnel! Wish our KDT ferries could get theirs painted.

I just took a look at their fares - ouch, especially if you are bringing a car! Passenger fairs seem reasonable.
