Some of you might know that on July 16th, our Forum will be celebrating it's 5 year anniversary. With that in mind I think we should have a major get together on a weekend closest to that date.
Myself and the staff can't organize it alone so I'd like some ideas to be posted here. I'm up for anything as long as it makes this get together convenient for most members and it is on a weekend.

Weekends would be the best time I think. What about something like a day trip to Galiano??? where we all meet up and spend the afternoon on Galiano ferry watching at Bellhouse Park. Might see a few V's for the last time in active pass. Have like a group picnic type thing. Providing the weather cooperates. That is one idea I had.

We should all pitch in, buy one of those massive cakes from Safeway and eat it on the deck of the Coastal Renaissance... now that is my idea of a forum anniversary celebration.
We could get a cake that says "Five years of ferry geekiness... and we ain't stoppin' now!"
...or we could do something else.

If you're wondering who have been members longest, here's a short list:
Myself - July 16, 2003 Scott - July 16, 2003 Noleaksyet - August 8, 2003 (inactive) Political Incorrectness - August 16, 2003 Koastal Karl - September 16, 2003
I think that's it for 2003. A whole bunch more joined in the summer of 2004 when the forum more or less took off.

Isn't it ironic that the longest members joined on the 16th of the respective months( active members that is). What could we do in respect of the numbers 16 and 5?

I believe I found this place in March 2004 during a google search. There was next to no discussions going on at that time, averaging about 5 posts/week. Majority of those posts were by people like Karl and John H. I had alot of internet paranoia back then, so I didn't register until October of that year, once discussion had started to pick up a bit with the joining of Ship Rider, Karl, Doug, Coastal Skier, and others.
To celebrate this anniversary, I'd suggest renting the conference room of a Spirit/Coastal and having one massive Ferry Geek conference.
OR
We pick a series of trips on our favourite routes, and do a tour for 2 or maybe 3 days. The tour would include stops at towns where some members live at, while us members on tour act like celebrities ;D.

I joined in December 2003, but when the birthdate verfication was implemented I hit the wrong date and all my posts and account were deleted!!! (I need to ask John to correct this as I had 200-600 posts).

Rent? Maybe BCFerries would offer the room free in recognition of the mega trips represented by the forum and massive fares collected. Seriously Chris that is a great idea.

I found this place looking for info on the Queen of Chilliwack and haven't been the same since. My dad calls it a "sickness", my boss calls it "Networking".
Cheers,

I like the idea of doing a day trip to Galiano, especially since I've never been there. I was looking at the upcoming summer ferry schedules to see what the sailing times are, and it appears that a Sunday schedule could possibly work out the best for getting people to and from the island for just the day. So, perhaps, Sunday, July 20 would be a good day for this event. Here is what I found, ferry-wise: for people coming from the mainland:lv. Tsawwassen: 9:50am ar. Galiano: 10:45am lv. Galiano: 5:20pm ar. Tsawwassen: 6:15pm for people coming from the island:lv. Swartz Bay: 8:55am ar. Galiano: 11:45am 2-stops (Long Harbour, Mayne Island) lv. Galiano: 4:40pm ar. Swartz Bay: 6:20pm 1-stop (Pender)

Would you like me to make a cake that looks like one of our favourite ships? Perhaps a V-Class? Maybe something similar to this: www.bcferries.com/about/history/arch_100_mil_celeb.htmlWhat flavour should it be? Oh, and I don't think I can fit a cake that big into my oven, so I will have to bake it into sections. Perhaps bake it as a smaller vessel, then bake seperate pieces. The extra pieces will be used to stretch and lift the cake...does that procedure sound familliar? Hehehe. Anytime that you have planned for this wonderful get together is fine for me. As long as I can have at least 2 weeks notice, so I can book time off work. I have never been to Galiano, so I think going there would be a splendid idea, unless a better idea comes to light. I also like the idea of renting the conference room, I would definitely pitch in for rent! I am quite excited about this, because it would give me the chance to finally meet all of you.

QoEsq: take a page out of the Spirit vessels and have several people baking different sections of the cake for you at various different locations. Bring them all into your kitchen and assemble them. Of course, in true BC spirit, don't get any of the people to collaborate on what flavour/type of cake they are building - you'll have to assemble the hodge-podge as you best see fit with the pieces that you have. And while you are at it, remember to plan the assembly for at least a week or two ahead of time so that the time delays are taken into account to. And allow for roughly double your budget - that should take in the cost overruns. Hopefully there won't be any labour disruptions to further push the plan behind.
