Ships were 9 miles out from Neck Point, steaming at 20 knots. The two cruise ships were observed from approximately 1850 to 1900, being about an hour out from their departure from Vancouver. Thanks for the charts Paul. I left my home at 1830hrs and was at Neck Point at 1845 or so......your timing is bang-on. There was a 3rd ship that I was watching on SiiTech at 1800hrs, Diamond Princess. But after she passed Point Atkinson, it looked like she was turning to go into Howe Sound. I have no idea why. While at Neck Point, I finally saw her closer to 2000hrs off of Gibsons. I wonder what she was doing, to cause her delay or diversion. I'll try to see if I can figure out the SiiTech history, but I was wondering if anyone else knew what she was doing.

The Reason the Diamond Princess took a strange Course by going up Howe Sound, & around the back side of Bowen Island is probably they were killing time for their Slack Tide Time in Seymour Narrows. I've heard on the Marine Radio the Ships notifying Comox Vessel Traffic hey are adjusting their Speed, & Course for Slack Tide in Seymour Narrows. While Camping up in Campbell River I've seen S/B Cruise Ships coming through Campbell River sometimes as early 2pm, & then seeing them dogging, & even making a left at the South Tip of Quandra Island, & going behind all the small Islands. I've even seen some N/B Cruise Ships Hi Tailing it to make the 1st Slack Tide of the Evening.
Btw is the SiTech Site down, or moved to another address? I can seem to get it anymore?

I went cruise ship watching this afternoon in Victoria. Here are some photos... First, the Pacific PrincessPP here with the outbound CohoSecond, The World, not a cruise ship so much as a floating time-share condo... Bonus - another shot of the Coho, outbound for Port Angeles. And lastly one photo of the Norwegian Star off of Stories Beach just south of Port Hardy. This was taken on May 17th shortly before the Northern Expedition's Port Hardy 'Open Ship'. Diamond Princess is doing her Howe Sound diversion, right now as I type this.
....just in case you wanted to know. Queen of Capilano will need to dodge it.
- she entered Howe Sound through Queen Charlotte Channel.
- she sailed past Snug Cove & Horseshoe Bay
- she sailed between Gambier & Bowen Islands, toward Langdale.
- she turned to pass between Keats and Bowen Islands.
Basically she has circumnavigated Bowen Island.

That would be the Star Princess, Norwegian Pearl and Westerdam which are actually three ships I would love to cruise on someday! They all look like beautiful ships!!

I personally think that all cruise ships look dispicably ugly. Especially when they dock in Prince Rupert Cruise Ship Terminal at Cow Bay. They dwarf the entire community. I could see the Norwegian Star from the Safeway So ugly.

Watch what you say. There are people on here who love cruise ships as do I. I have been on the Norwegian Star was my first cruise and I have to say she is a beautiful ship and is probably still my favorite so far. How can you say all cruise ships are ugly?? I do agree some are more attractive than others.

I do agree some are more attractive than others. Yes, I admit, there may be a few ok ones. Its the size of them that really daunts me. When I was in Rupert at Cow bay, it blocked out the sun, and sucked a poor guy who was in a small boat under the water (he sustained no major injuries). I just dont like them from my past experiences. They're so steriotypical: a pool with 'palm tree' lights, shopping mall, and 50 restaurants... and they look very top heavy from most angles. thats my opinion though. The Northern Expedition is probably the only ""Cruise Ship""" that actually looks quite handsome, apart from the QMII

I think I heard about that incident in Rupert with the cruise ship. That's what I really like about some of the Norwegian ships are really decorative with palm trees lights on the outer decks. My last cruise in May was on the Norwegian Sun and her pool deck was very plain. Although the Norwegian Sun has the same blue decks as the Nor Ex and the inside of the Norwegian Sun like other cruise ships was really nice. No cruise ship has 50 resturants but yeah some people like cruising and some people dont. I still love the ferry cruising but I love cruising on a cruise ship. A 7 night Alaska cruise and I still dident want to leave. Some of the cruise ships are just amazing though.

I promised a few days ago to post some photos taken last Wednesday in Ketchikan, Alaska, of cruise ships that I saw there while en route south aboard the AMHS's M/V Taku. Here they are: Ketchikan harbor with Ryndam & Radiance of the SeasRyndam above & below Radiance of the Seas above & below Coral Princess seen just north of Ketchikan, Alaska in Tongass Narrows - 26 Aug 2009 [L Hemmingson photo] Ketchikan had four large cruise ships in town that day. I missed the Zaandam. What were all those tourists doing? They were either checking out the cruise line owned jewelry shops in town, or going for duck rides...

Cool photos! I have wanted to see the Norwegian Star in Prince Rupert! My favorite ship!! Thanks! As I said earlier in the forum, I don't really like the appearance of cruise ships that much, but now when I look at the photos, I think that at least the 'Star looks quite nice. If I had to choose a favorite, that would be it. I bet that if I saw it in the PR harbour again, though, that new opinion would revert, as the ship totally dwarf the Cow bay area, causing Cow bay to look quite odd. Maybe if I saw it in Vancouver I woulod like it more....

You need to get out Mill Bay and travel on more ships other than BC Ferries. Maybe your opinion will change, lol!!

You need to get out Mill Bay and travel on more ships other than BC Ferries. Maybe your opinion will change, lol!! Maybe I might if there were actually any ships around worth traveling on. Not everything that floats is a ship, and those floating casinos are definitely not ships just because they float... they don't even look like ships. THere's no harmony of design and they look bulky, lopsided and clumsy, greedy and gluttonous. Not to mention their other attractive feature. You've never been in a smaller boat when one of those things goes through the inside passage... And you thought the Pacificats had wakes. Imagine what that does for erosion. The people on Bowen Island wouldn't even be around to complain anymore, because they'd be washed clean off their island.

The people on Bowen Island wouldn't even be around to complain anymore, because they'd be washed clean off their island. Finally someone agrees with me. It's just as bad, or worse in Johnstone strait. Your in the pristine wilderness, then suddenly you look left, and theres a massive topheavy box floating along. When I was on the tallship, we were whale-watching, then the big thing came around the corner, and people started pointing. It was irritating. On the sistership of the Pacific Swift (the tallship), who was doing the same route, about 12 miles ahead, the captain of the cruise liner raidoed the Skipper of the Pacific Grace and asked to do a close pass-by of her so the passengers could get some photos. The skipper said yes, and they were almost swamped by the things wake. If you're gonna travel on a ship other than a North american ferry, then make it the Canadian Coast Guard Icebreakers. The CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier is my favorite of them.

The Celebrity tender-boats, in Nanaimo harbour: Cormorants, tender-boat and Protection Island The tendering process: The ship has it's own wharf that folds-down like a Murphy-bed.
