i'm curious to know if anyone here who likes to design or draw bc ferry vessels on the computer can come up with a design for either a super century class vessel or a modified design of the skeena to possibily redesign the passenger areas Interesting you say that. There's discussion about turning lounge #3 into a small snack bar lounge. Its a bit of a long haul for folks going to or from Galiano Island without a snack bar. At the very least, they could at least provide paper cups in the coffee machine, have a free hot water and potable water spigot, and replace the pop can machine with a multipurpose machine, soap, toothpaste/ brush, comb, tampons, etc. Because really, how many people go camping on the gulf islands/ hiking/ biking? Functionality wins. The thing is though, there's also discussion about putting the mighty lone century class on a different run(s) in the fleet, and replacing the route 4 vessel with the new mid sized vessel (without the garage deck) which would be an interesting sight. The Saltspring crowd love the Skeena, the other Gulf Islanders generally despise it. Its the "bus not a cruise ship" that all those bumper stickers where referring to! Plump up the seats a bit, change a few things to meet Transport Canada/ classification society regulations for new build designs, and it'll take a pretty darn skippy ship and make it even skippier. ...its a word. >.>

The Skeena Queen is not going to be serving the outer islands on a regular basis, and I haven't heard of BC Ferries having any plans to upgrade it.

They should upgrade her and coastalize her lounges with better seating. Those hard seats are horrible. Not that I travel on the Skeena that often but I imagine right now in the outer gulf islands she's not that comfortable for long/multiple port sailings!

What YoursTruly says does make me wonder what BC Ferries has in store for the Skeena Queen. With the Salish Class vessels coming next year and the replacements for the Powell River Class and the NIP in the not too distant future, we'll of course see a number of vessels retired or redeployed. Perhaps those dock trials she did last year at the Route 7, 17, and 23 Terminals means we haven't seen the last of the Skeena in that region? I also see a number of other routes she could cover that are currently relieved by the Bowen Queen. (4, 5, 8, 19?) Converting one of her lounges to a snack bar would certainly support this theory. Hmmmm...

If they do add a Snack Bar aboard the Skeena, that would make her an appropriate replacement vessel for Bowen Island (not that it's needed anyway). Plus. she now has the same capacity as the Queen of Capilano. Perhaps we'll also see the Skeena on route 7 in the future. However, speaking of the Skeena, it will be interesting to see what is put on route 4 when she goes for refit... the third Salish boat would be a vast increase in capacity, not to mention double the crew.

Initially, as in before the order was signed, one of the three new ships was too have a lower capacity which would have been in the same range as a garage-less Salish. Wondering if this is a hold out from that time?

The Salish Class design would be a good fit for a variety of routes. In it's current 145AEQ configuration (w/ garage deck), I could see Route 7 as being a candidate for a future new-build. That would shift Island Sky to another route, perhaps Route 8. Capilano would then go elsewhere, maybe alongside Cumberland on Route 5 - that would be a nice capacity boost for the Southern Gulf Islands ferries out of Swartz Bay, and a good replacement for Mayne Queen.
If one were to eliminate the garage deck from the current design, that leaves a capacity of 86AEQ on the main car deck level, and I know that size of vessel has been discussed here before, and I believe something close to that capacity was on that chart from a few years ago showing the different sizes of vessels BCF is contemplating for future new-builds.
