Nicola, Nimpkish, and Albert J. Savoie all have the same hull and superstructure. The Savoie is named for the Hornby Island family who ran the ferry service prior to Highways taking it over.

The indians shortened it. lol Oh, so she's been sold it to India? yeah well... the Haida, I don't s'pose you call them these days... Grammar mistake: "Oh, so she's been sold it to India?" should be: "Oh, so she's been sold to the people of India?" Sorry, I like being politically correct... lol...

I've had it with Mega Upload! I've tried 3 times and it doesn't work! Chris, do you have any suggestions for sites that can upload movies, or short videos? YouTube.com

I always forget about the Nicola... what ever happened to her? What run(s) was she on before being striken?

According to Karls video, it looks like she was running out of Swartz Bay with the Tackek, but I couldn't tell which route though. She's up North now, serving some small coastal communities, similar to what the Nimpkish is doing right now, I think.

The video of her at Swartz Bay I dont know if she was in service then cause the Cumberland was on the route and probably the Tachek before the Mayne Queen was on the route. Unless it was filling in for the Tachek.

The Tachek worked on route 4, then was taken over by the Bowen Queen, and then by the new Skeena Queen.

I have videos the ones Chris has of the Tachek sailing along next to the SOVI on her way to one of the Gulf Islands. I think she went to Galiano once cause I remember hearing about an accident at Galiano once that had to do with the Tachek.

Nicola hadn't had any regular run for many years before going up north under charter as the "Spirit of LaxKw'alaams", run by the native band from Prince Rupert to Port Simpson. No, Quinsam Teen, Tachek never was the regular ferry to Fulford. Bowen Queen took over from the Saltspring Queen. Tachek was launched as the "Texada Queen".

The Spirit of Lax Kw'alaams (ex Nicola) goes by my house pretty much every day - I'm on a cliff overlooking the Prince Rupert harbour. I can take some pictures if that is of interest to anyone. BTW we used to see the QPR and QON sailing around in the harbour on summer Saturday mornings as they did a meet at the terminal here in Rupert - guess that is now just a memory.

Some background on the Nicola's move up north, eleven years ago.

That article states that she was launched as the Quadra Queen, under the Ministry Fleet. It's strange that she'd use the "Queen" designation then, yet have her name changed to a "non-BCF"ish one upon being transferred to BCF. Not doubting this info, and I know other vessels had a similar story, it just seems odd.

She was re-named Cortes Queen in '69, and re-named Nicola in 1980, years before BC Ferries absorbed the Ministry routes.

You're correct Neil. I remember her being the Nicola when BC Ferries took over the Ministry's Fleet. I don't remember her running much even before the routes were absorbed. I believe the Nicola was tied up for a couple of years at Saltery Bay in the old Blackball berth.

Those must be loooooong trips in that small boat with no services. Nimkish too - those five hour jaunts to Ocean Falls on the hard plastic seats. Do they let people sleep in their cars at least?

It's not too bad unless it's dark out. Then there's not much to see so it can get a little long then. I rode the Nimpkish with my Father from McLaughlin Bay to Bella Coola in October 2006 and I didn't mind it too much. The crew was really friendly and let me come down in the engine room plus they give you coffee (you just supply your own food) and you can adjust the heat in the cabin plus the TV in the upper corner of the lounge had a DVD player that they let me use. Boy did that save the day when we left McLaughlin Bay at 2am. You can't really sleep on there because of the seats so it was better to watch DVD's! I just wish they would replace the plastic seats with a few recliners, lol. I think you could sleep in your car if you wanted too.

Well, I am doing so pre-planning for my trip next summer (yes, I know, It's awfully soon!) and I REALLY want to go on the Nicola this time. I've phoned quite a few numbers and I can't seem to get a schedule. Does anyone know what days and times she runs?

Just as an administrative note, this is not a retired BC Ferry. She is a current vessel.
