This is the thread for the 2013 cruise ship season. The 2013 cruise ship schedule is out for Victoria and the first ship in this year is the Zaandam on April 17th. The last cruise ship of the season is the Sapphire Princess Sept 29th which is earlier this year. We have three new cruise ships up here for the Alaska Season
Celebrity Solstice replacing the Celebrity Infinity this year. Will be her first time in Victoria May 14th. And will be the regular Thursday night ship.
Carnival Miracle replacing the Carnival Spirit May 13th first visit to Victoria and will be the regular Monday night ship.
Grand Princess replacing the Sea Princess first visit to Victoria will be May 18th Saturday and will be in on different days.
Norwegian Sun returns for the Alaska Season. Not new to this area but her previous year here was 2009 so she hasent been here 3 years. We did our Alaska Cruise on the NCL Sun in 2009 so it will be nice to see her again here. May 11 Saturday will be her first visit to Victoria this year and will return again at the end of the season Sept 18th when she leaves to go south. Looking forward to seeing these different ships up here.

Zaandam was in the news in the Fall of 2012 for the wrong reason - it received a very low health inspection score in the US, failing the inspection. In fact it was, cruise ship forum members report, among the lowest scores of a major cruise ship in some time. The Zaandam obviously passed a second inspection, and also had a perfect score on a Canadian inspection after apparently much needed work was completed.

That ship was tied up in St. John's for about 2 years before being towed off. I took this picture of it in October 2012. The design of it reminded me of the Wickersham and QotN. It's difficult to see from this angle, but it was on a pretty significant port list. A friend of mine is on a CG vessel on the Grand Banks, and took this picture a few days ago. Taken approximately 250nm off Newfoundland.

Oh dear, it sounds like those aboard are having a real Northern 'Southern Adventure'.

the thing to remember about Carnival is it is the biggest operator on the cruise scene, and has absorbed Cunard, Holland-America, Costa, and many others, so it is no wonder that they will have casulities! mrdot.

Interestingly I have refused to sail since my perception of a very poor response to the Costa Concordia grounding. I feel the only way to punish companies is by with holding my money even if it is only one person (although I have directly influenced about sixty nights of cruising since then for me and family). Feel terrible for the passengers and crew. Not the company.
The ship is actually docking right now, and the hyperbole by CNN is both amusing and ridiculous.
Interesting to see what happens with the vessel now. Carnival has rebranded ships before, and is currently rebranding one now. Perhaps a time for a very major refit of both mechanical and passengers areas with a new name on her Re-entry to service.

I'm honestly surprised they don't build redundancy into them to avoid an entire power failure. There should at least be another propulsion engine and power generator so that issues like that don't happen.

This evening, I spent some quality time on Carnival's Wikipedia page. Every single major vessel incident has been the exact same scenario, with a fire, usually in the engine room, knocking out propulsion. I do understand that fire poses the largest threat to any ship at any time, however one does wonder if there is anything more that can be done, especially on a vessel of this size and capacity?
I did sail on Carnival over the summer on a 3-day down to Mexico, and was overall not exactly blown away by what was offered - the interior seemed worn and outdated, I did not see my room steward for 2 of the 3 days despite finding broken glass on the floor of my room (this did not instill confidence), and the amenities were lacking. Granted, the vessel was commissioned in 1995, but my previous experience on Royal Caribbean indicated that this experience was not one of quality for the cruising industry.

Paul I agree with you in principle, but would add Carnival is the parent company of Princess, HA, etc. Not an equal partner. That's why I am informally boycotting the whole group.
The temptation to book Carnival during this massive price drop is strong, though!

..all that impresed with what I saw with the WSF vessel I was aboard on the Bremerton to Seattle route. Which ferry was it, perchance? One thing to consider, is it's not a situation in which we simply don't care to maintain our vessels. It's just a matter of fact the overall maintenance and preventative care budget within WSF has been sapped dry over the last decade.

Please improve signage.

Please improve signage. Wait, the Seawest lounge? Let me think. Ah, yes, you might not know the WSF dialect. The seawest lounge is located right behind the bridges! It has some nice comfy seats, that the crew loves to rest in particularly. The signage to follow is "crew only". -But you must have a special code from the buffet in order to get in

Is corporate governance and safety culture just possibly an issue within this organization?

Royal Caribbean has a commercial on ABC tonight, if you have access to American cable, introducing two of their three ships on order. The two ships are the Quantum class which won't be the biggest in the line's fleet but will nonetheless be pretty substantial. I think the second or third biggest class in the world. The third ship order is for a third Oasis class ship, which is the largest cruise ship design in the world.
Commercial time is between 1930-2000 hrs.

Someone should compile a Hall of Shame cd of some of the dreck that made up the obligatory 30%... turned out well, though, with today's vibrant home grown music scene. Season Princess seemed a possibility at first glance, given the existence of the Song of Flower, which might be my nomination for worst cruise ship name ever.
