I try and schedule my trips during a full moon as I can see the moon-lit magic come alive as I skirt along the Kootenai River. I can see some white water and trees on the river sides lit by the moon. This is when sleep time takes a back seat until another time of day on my trips.
Thanks sir. I like how you plan and do your trips.
- I know what you mean about scheduling sleep for "another time of day" on a trip. I've experienced that with early morning trip-fun while on northern BC Ferries.
Since August is coming to a close, I thought I would post this image during my train ride from Trapani to Marsala in July. It is of the engineer (sitting on the left side) engrossed in chatting to the conductor while we are travelling at 100kph!
Onr ogf these days I will finally sort all of my photos and post some of the ferries I saw in my travels.

There is a wonderful model train route set up on the main deck of the SS Sicamous, in Penticton BC. - This is a model of the KVR route in the Myra Canyon area and down to Penticton, including a great view of old Penticton downtown with the CPR's Hotel Incola, and the Sicamous at the dock.
We saw this on July 18, 2012.
Here is the video of part of the route:

A trio of train photos taken on Saturday while on my return north to the Wett Coast...
South (west) bound CN box train in Fraser Canyon just south of Boston Bar, BC - 1 September 2012 by Wett Coast, on Flickr [/size] CN south (west) bound mixed freight on Thompson River bridge at Lytton, BC - 1 September 2012. (Mr. Horn was at this same bridge taking train pics back in July...). This train was a very long one with a third locomotive about 2 km back from the head end. Much of the freight on this train was forest products originating from north-central BC. Such freight used to be moved south over what was the BCR. by Wett Coast, on Flickr
CP west bound grain train on CN's Ashcroft Sub along Thompson River below Spences Bridge, BC - 1 September 2012 by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Port Alberni's summer tourist steam train, which runs from the Alberni Quay station (near the Frances Barkley dock) to McLean Mill historic site. - I saw it on Saturday, September 1, 2012.
Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, of course.
Start of its 10:00am trip to the old mill site
I tried to line up the mill's smoke with the locomotive's stack.

While researching a question from SCC Commuter (about whether freight is still carried on the E&N - sorry, no answer found), I found this interesting PDF report:
Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure
Bridge Inspection and Assessment - E&N Railway, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada
Phase 2 - Evaluation Report Bridge from Mile 1.30 to Mile 65.1 and two Bridges on Wellcox Spur (28 Bridges) and Executive Summary

This Flickr photo site (Vancouver Island Group) has some recent photos of rail freight activity on the former E&N. There is not much freight moving, but there still is some.
talking about the not much movement, how about the little railroad that could? referring the the trunk of BC rail / roberts bank subdivision, that ran the magical port piece to nowhere section, that was a real pricey pork barrel sallery for someone in Falcon's world maybe a toy railroad for the poster boy for Jenny Craig! mrdot.
The last run of the Ontario Northland Railway's Northlander in both directions was today. Much like BC Rail's Cariboo Prospector, the Northlander was an essential service for many small communities (especially in winter when the nearby roads are closed by bad weather), some of which have no other connection to the outside world. It will be replaced by a bus service.
Five different CP engines in four different liveries. Not something you see everyday. It looks like some are from lines that CP's purchased over the years.

Those are all bought-new CP engines except the blue one, which is an CEFX leaser. The St.L&H (St. Lawrence and Hudson) was an internal operating subsidiary for some CP's lines in the East in the mid 90's, it's quite rare to see one, since almost all have been repainted back into CP.

Obviously CP operates their Holiday train west bound over their own tracks between Ashcroft & Vancouver. That is of course in the opposite direction to the vast majority of traffic on that line which is in the CP-CN directional running territory.
