As indicated by my posting of that shot of the Queen of the Islands in 1976, I'm going through family slides from 30 years ago and scanning them into my computer. And, of course, finding places that may or may not still be around. So far: --Cadboro Bay Park with the great play sculptures. I know this one's still around, though the octopus was pink in 1976. --Fabled Cottage. Where is/was this, anyway? --Duncan Forest. Isn't this a railway museum of some sort now? I'll be asking for a bit of help locating these and other things. Thank you all!

I vaguely remember the fabled cottage but can't put my finger on it at the moment. I will remember either in the shower or when I put my head on the pillow tonight. Minute I do either all sorts of things pop into my head I have been trying to remember and I don't have a laptop or note pad ;D.
The Ducan Forest is now a Railway/Logging Museum and was just north of my Grandmothers.
You remember the castle built out of pop or beer bottles? lol

A Google search for Fabled Cottage brought up this here link. The only other hit ( this link) seems to indicate that it still exists.

The museum has a working steam engine. It was used to haul logs. I can remember hearing the toot of the whistle on some days at my Grandmothers when the winds were right. I would guess it is about ten minutes North of Duncan. There are actually a couple fabled cottages. One is found here www.denmanis.bc.ca/features/denhorn.pdf. The other is on the drive between Ogden Point and Oak Bay somewhere. I am always expecting to see someone get run over taking pics of the house and the amazing flower display. There is another one somewhere which I think is more of a gift shop. It maybe on the way to Buchart Gardens.

The Forest Museum in Duncan was a huge favourite of mine. I haven't been there since 1995/6 or so though. Back then we had a seasons pass to the park, and would ride the trains weekly. My mom and I had a deal so that I'd go shopping with her at the Eatons store in Duncan in the morning, then we'd get to ride on the train at Forest Museum in the afternoon. There are several steam trains on site, and the majority of them are able to run.

I remember being in either grade 1 or 2, waking up early and catching the E&N Dayliner from Langford to go to the BC Forest Museum.
I was not impressed the last time I was at the BC Forest Museum. Everything was closed, only the train was running, and only the Gift shop was open. Middle of summer and all the displays around the museum were closed, but they were running the steam engine. The No.25, which was used building the CNR in the Fraser Canyon.

Fable Cottage was located on Cordova Bay Road, south of Matticks Farm and just north of McMorrans. The original owners lived in the cottage for awhile, then they moved out to live in another place on the property. During tourist season, bus loads of tourists, came there all the time. They sold the cottage and property to the "Lanes"(who owned other tourist attractions.) The new owners added a path of gnomes and scenes with gnomes in them. However, as this attraction was only seasonal, it was not the money maker that they had hoped. It was then decided to develop the land into townhouses and Fable Cottage was put up for sale. The cottage was sold to a person who cut it into three pieces and had it barged to Denman Island. There are a couple of other older houses, which were barged to Denman from the Greater Victoria Area.(one was from Oak Bay)
The castle, made up of pop bottles was demolished because the Highway was being widened. In front of the castle was a bottle of pop made out of pop bottles, it had to be reconstructed over the years as cars would crash into it.

Thanks Shipdaughterwife for the info. I forgot the bottle castle was demolished with the widening of the road. It was a landmark for me that we were getting close to my Uncle's when we were coming down the highway.
I remember that Eatons Store as well. My Grandmother and I would go to the lunch counter sometimes for lunch. After it was closed we would go to the Victoria Eatons and then lunch at White Spot. I always wanted to take the Dayliner down and back but the timing never seemed to work out for us.

Shipdaughterwife has the location of the former Fable Cottage right on. She also has the name correct (i.e. no 'd' at the end of fable. When I was a kid growing up in the Gordon Head area of Victoria we called it 'Feeble Cottage'. It was once a significant Victoria tourist attraction. I never did tour it. It was visible, however, from cars passing by on the road, so I did at least see the outside of it many times.

Where exactly was that bottle castle? I remember going by it as a kid, but for the life of me, I can't remember where it was!

It was just south of Duncan sort of accross from the Whippletree Junction. It was basicly a house with the walls and roof built out of old bottles.

I remember the exact spot,(I just don't remember where it was in relation to the other land marks, and I will be going up island in February, so I will look more closely at the landmarks near where it was.) The Castle was on the left side of the road as you were going up to Duncan. It was past Mill Bay and the Shawnigan Lake cutoffs. There was an Aztec mini golf on the right(which is now closed), just before you would reach the castle. The castle was a landmark that you just couldn't miss seeing and over the years, cars would actually hit the big pop bottle out front(it was repaired more than once) On a relatively straight and flat stretch of land. Going further up the road, if you come to a Rest Area(Cobble Hill and Cowichan Bay Turnoffs, where a new mall has been constructed during the last ten years.)---wine country area--you will have gone to far.
