As a bonus, here's the ship berthed at Horseshoe Bay: Nice work, CV! Just one thing though... To stay with the practice of many decades, single enders would be berthed 'bow in' at Horseshoe Bay. This was the case for Blackball ships way back when, the Spaulding single enders, and, of course, the fast cats of recent fame. WCK/JST

You probably remember one of my first ferries, the Spirit of Mill Bay. Well, I've been revisiting a few of my old ships, and remodeling them to unrecognizable levels. I've actually remodeled this ship twice now. The first time, it wasn't much better than the original. This time, I think I did a pretty good job. The new wheelhouse though is an entirely new concept, and I got my inspiration from the NorEx (extended front sections), Queen of Chilliwack (covered bridge wings), Cumberland Class/Island Sky (podium design), and the MV Stavangerfjord (shape of central section of wheelhouse). Here's the original, to refresh your memory. Notice how the ship, though it's quite small, has two wheelhouses. Also notice that, though there's no real reason for it, I limited the height of the side vehicle tunnels on the car deck. Silly me Here's a total redesign I did not long after I first built it. Still bizarre. Here's a top-view timeline of the original, then a redesign I did awhile ago, then the final product that I just finished today. Stretched it on the first redesign: The new redesign maintains the stretching, and tons of remodeling and reshaping throughout: Here are various screenshots: Notice the height of the car deck. 6 meters, to accommodate taller vehicles, or so platform decks could be installed later on. There's also a landing on the stairwell at where the 'deck 3' door would be in the future. This is also the first time that I implanted the BCF logo on the side of a ship. I referred to their website to make sure the branding was done properly. ;D I'd like opinions on the overall redesign, and the experimental wheelhouse design.

This is a BC Ferries fleet profile styled preview of the next SketchUp ship I'll be posting. And no, it's not the Queen of the North, or the Wickersham, or the Island Princess, although she looks similar to all three. She's just based on the same design. She's two meters longer than our Spirit Class, and if built, she would be a cruiseferry with the emphasis being on the cruise part. Vehicle entry is only through the stern, as on the NorAd. I'll save the rest for when I actually post the model...

I don't think she looks anything like the Island Princess. Gotta love ferry-nerd humour. It's an art form. ;D

have a close look at that surviving central island block on the present day nip, and you will see clearly the old island block enlarged atop a very broadened hull layout! this was quite the conversion job, too bad they couldn't have pulled such an extensive re-modeling of queen of the islands! :)mrdot.

Jim had it right... I meant the cruise ship Island Princess: I knew you were referring to the cruise ship. I saw an opportunity for a joke, and I took it.

Here's the Hecate Queen: During construction, after having to remove the funnel and upper deck due to me having messed up the entire upper deck of the ship. Looking back to the main superstructure from the bow at eye-level, showing how high the bow railings go as they raise up nearing the bow. A clean view of the ship, still without windows, livery, and many smaller things that I added later. The final product: The bridge wings may look abnormally long, but the ship has quite a curve to her, so to actually be able to see astern with ease, they need to be quite long. You'll see what I mean in the top view coming soon: Looking forward: The pool in the stern. This would only be used on calm days, obviously. It could also be removed to make space for on-board entertainment, as this area is quite sheltered from the elements: A high angle, showing the breadth of the vessel: A stern view. Those people-doors are for foot-passengers to board. There is an identical pair on the port side as well. Like on the NorAd, there is a separate stairwell for these doors, so footies need not enter the car deck upon embarking on the vessel. Here's the top view I mentioned earlier, showing the bridge wings' length in comparison to the curve of the ship. A cutaway looking forward from amidships: Another cutaway: Two detailings of the previous cutaway: Lastly, the ship tied up at Canada Place for her open house (this was before I added her stripe livery)

I have a bit of a challenge/commission to ask of some of you artists. I have been looking at images of ships with the Ulstein x-bow, and trying to imagine them as ferries. If one of you who are artistic has some time, I would love to see a concept of what a Spaulding designed x-bow ferry might look like.

Nice work there 'timmyc'! I admire folks that build models of any kind as they surely possess one human ingredient, which I am bereft, that being 'Patience' when making or assembling 'creative' objects.
