Look who made an appearance in the San Juans yesterday! (And is, at last check, moored at Lovric's in Anacortes, though on the outside of the breakwater where it isn't easy to get a photo of her...) Courtesy of Barnacle. Excellent - under her own power. Suppose she sailed down from Seldovia that way or was towed? Great shot. Thanks Barnacle . . .

For completeness sake, I am looking to start a Wikipedia page on the Chilkat. Does anyone have any pictures of her (preferably in AMHS colors) that you would be willing to donate to WikiCommons? For extra credit, does anyone own any Chilcoot pictures that they would be willing to give to WikiCommons?
Thank you.

WettCoast: I sent you a message about using that photo, as well as many other BCF ferry photos, a couple days ago. Did you receive it? I take it you will be contacting Mr. DOT to find out if he'll let you use his images on Wikimedia Commons.

Yes, I got your message & the license status on most of those images has already been changed. I will get around to changing the rest tonight. I will talk to David.

The April 2014 issue of Western Mariner magazine has an advert for Chilkat, as "for sale." This is on page 64 in the Harlow Marine advert. $225,000 USD asking price. See web HERE

See web HEREI note that photo #2 on the linked Harlow website is mine, 'borrowed' without permission. It can be seen on page 2 of this thread. Harlow apparently is very good at taking photos from wherever to use in their advertising.

It would've been totally legal for them to use your photo if they gave credit - since it's under a CC licence. But stealing it and putting their own copyright notice on it is a bit too much. Who already had their photos stolen by the same website? Did they agree to remove/credit it or were they feeling unprofessional?

Any update on the ex-AMHS Chilkat? The link to the Harlow Marine posting goes nowhere now. Anyone know if it was sold?

Thanks to a May 27, 2015 post by Barnacle, I contacted Lovric Sea-Craft just to check on the status of the Chilkat. I think they sensed the sentimental tone of my note and were kind enough to respond with the following: "The vessel is in our yard under going a conversion to fishing tender/landing craft. She is owned by Atlantic Cape Fisheries. She is still alive." Lovric posts frequent photos of some of their high quality restorations and modification projects on their Facebook page. In some of the stills and videos, you can see the reconfigured Chilkat (cut down 3/4 of the way back to expose the open auto deck, with bow ramp intact and the bridge section moved back to the stern). Sad it can't look the same, but just knowing that the reconfigured Chilkat will continue to work on the water made me very happy. BTW, the latest satellite image on Google Maps of the Lovric yard also clearly shows the Chilkat. (Gotta love the Internet)

Recent Facebook posts by the Lovric yard include background images of the Chilkat still languishing in mid-modification. I contacted a Lovric spokesman who said the yard and the owner are looking for a buyer. I'd love to see the little boat finally get the new life she deserves.

As recently as last month, she's still at Lovric's (see right-hand background of photo posted on Facebook).

Hello, everyone. I have read most of the discussion and I am very pleased to learn about the boat. My grandpa and dad are the new owners of it. We are in the works of restoring it and getting her up and running, it’s a fairly new project. After seeing how some people are still interested in it years later, I would love to hear back from some of you guys! And thanks for all the information on the boat!

Schemes involving old ferries rarely end well, so I'm intrigued.

We plan on finishing the conversion to a landing craft for possible tendering, Freighting!

I wish you well in your restoration project. Very challenging, in these Covid times, to attempt a 'go fund me' effort for an obscure vessel like the Chilkat. I imagine you're reaching out to the Alaskan maritime community, where there would be some real familiarity with this pioneering little ferry? I'm curious about a few things, which your page didn't really address. This is an old boat; what's the hull condition, or any asbestos related issues, or any other factors that might impact future use? I'm also not clear on the suggestion to use her as a landing craft. Can a vessel with a traditional hull function in that role, with regard to being able to nose up onto a beach? And is this meant to be a privately operated business? Are you planning on having the vessel resemble her original configuration, and if not, would that affect the enthusiasm for people to donate? Again, best wishes. I guess time will tell if Alaskans want to help preserve the first vessel of the state's fleet. Hopefully she won't end up in the state that BC Ferries' first vessel is in on the Fraser.

Yikes! Sad, too. I'm guessing this pretty much kills the restoration project, or it makes it a lot more difficult, and expensive, to continue the project now that the vessel is at the bottom of the channel.

I wasn't aware they were restoring her... not with the butchering job they'd done to remove the forward half of the house.

The person who's been posting on this forum, saying that they are part of the ownership group, linked to a 'go fund me' page that was pretty fuzzy about the goal for the vessel- anything from a landing craft to a bed and breakfast, so who knows what the alterations were a part of.
