Can't say i'm a fan of the yellow funnel, but she does look better than in her inaugural photos.

It looks more sharp than the blue funnel. Is going to be a new livery?

It looks more sharp than the blue funnel. Is going to be a new livery? My guess: - that this is a 1 time thing, just for this one ship, because of the AMHS's 50th anniversary and Malaspina being the special "First ship." Yellow being close in color to Gold, and Gold being significant for 50th anniversaries. Just a guess. I am very interested in photographing this ship on her northbound journey up Johnstone Strait, but it all depends on when it happens and what I'm otherwise busy doing on that day. Seeing as I attended "Malaspina College" years ago, I should finally see the ship with the same name.

Judging by what I have read, only this vessel gets the yellow funnel. AMHS it appears, is making a bigger celebration of their 50th, then BCF did for their own in 2010.

It looks more sharp than the blue funnel. Is going to be a new livery? It is stated that the yellow funnel is to commemorate the AMHS 50th Anniversary (take note BC Ferries, it's a lot cooler than staff backpacks). I expect it's temporary and will only be applied to select ships in the fleet.

I am looking forward to my next trip south in early June on MV Malaspina. She has spent most of the fall and winter at Todds in Seattle having a major overhaul and upgrade. It will be interesting to see how it turned out. MV Malaspina continues to serve as "the First Lady of the Alaska Marine Highway System!" The 'First Lady' - would that be the same thing as the 'flag ship'? I would have thought that the Columbia would be designated as the 'flag ship' being as it is the biggest & fanciest (not withstanding its somewhat troubled operational history).

Keep an eye out, but bear in mind there's a good possibility that they will transit up the west coast of the island, as it is a shorter distance. I'm sure weather will play a role in that decision.

Siitech shows that the Malaspina is currently at the mouth of the Columbia River heading north west with the destination listed as Bellingham. If that is true, someone should be able to get photos in Washington and /or BC waters within a day or two.

Actually, the Mal returns to regular service after she completes her 'Golden Voyage' as per Mr. Horn's post quoted below. AMHS is celebrating their 50th anniversary, and the Malaspina is the centre-piece of the celebration.

The Mal is now waiting just off of the AMHS terminal at Bellingham; just waiting for the Columbia to move out of the way.

Quick bit of Trivia! What was the Malaspina's original name? Answer: Taku. The Malaspina and the Taku were being built side by side (so to speak). When the Malaspina was nearing completion a fire broke out that caused a delay in completion. Since the first ship to be completed was to be named Malaspina, the vessel that was going to be named Taku, was re-named Malaspina, and visa-versa! A bit of AMHS trivia that I've bumped, in case you missed it the first time around...

You're welcome. I happened to spot it on AIS, and was just hoping we would leave the dock in time to see her. I'd forgotten all about the anniversary 'stack job.

Thanks for the photo. I have to say I like the anniversary 'stack job! I think it would be great if they painted to rest of the fleet that way. Here's to wishing...

Happy anniversary AMHS!

The Malaspina was 'in the news' back in July of 1997. Here is a photo of her taken by Ian Smith of the Vancouver Sun. For now I will not provide details preferring to let others determine what was the occasion ...

3 still shots of AMHS's Malaspina, on her northbound post-refit voyage. - I'm at Comox, BC (on the beach, near the Little River BC Ferry terminal), on the Strait of Georgia. April 28, 2013: 5:47am, the deep blue of dawn matches the ferry hull; but not the special funnel paint ! 5:53am, lighting is rapidly improving, but the ferry is moving away from me. 5:56am ---------------- Video compilation to come later today.

Here is my video compilation of AMHS's MV Malaspina, seen from Comox, BC at dawn. - April 28, 2013.
...it would have been a better result (better lighting and closer proximity) if I had done this 1-2 hours later later from Campbell River & Seymour Narrows, but my schedule didn't allow for that. So that's why I've put this effort into poor-lighting / distant-ship photos & video.
But it shows the Malaspina in BC waters. There are not too many opportunitites to see that...
Enjoy

However, I won't disclose or provide a link of the story of this for at least a week so others can get a chance of solving. I'll provide the link after the first correct response (in form of a question, that is?).
