The Malaspina departed at approximately 0800 Alaska time (0900 PDT) this morning for a circumnavigation and day cruise to Misty Fijords National Monument, returning to Ketchikan later this evening. That first webcam capture there is cool, because it has my two favorite things in one shot: airplanes and ferries.

On September 20, 2010, I packed my bags in Skagway and headed home from another great summer season in Alaska. I never imagined, at the time, that it would be my last. Here's a shot from my Wings of Alaska Cessna Caravan of the Malaspina at the Skagway ferry dock. IMGP1117 by Photos by Keegan, on Flickr

There are some nice photos of the Malaspina sporting her golden 50th anniversary funnel posted on the AMHS Flickr group. Follow this link to have a look at these photos taken by a Flickr user calling himself 'gillfoto'. Here is a thumbnail of one of the photos... Dayboat Malaspina 27 by gillfoto, on Flickr

:)I've just been vueing these new 'golden age' funnels of the updated Alaska fleet, and thinking they are just about reaching the gold card years, but the traditional funnel and deep blue emblem was magnificent and should remain, but so should our traditional dogwood for our BC fleet! mrdot.

The Malaspina has already replaced the Columbia on the Bellingham - Friday route (need any more evidence that fall is upon us?). That means that the Mal will be showing off her golden funnels in BC & Washington State waters every week through the fall & into the winter. There may be some photo opportunities as she heads north/south.
The Columbia is apparently already in Oregon undergoing yet another overhaul (Alaskan equivalent of what we in BC call a refit?).

So the main reason why we spent our Thanksgiving up north in Belligham was, you guessed it, to see the MV Malaspina at Fairhaven! She sure is one handsome Spaulding ferry, and I like the golden stack. I think it looks MUCH better than the usual design, at least on the Original Blue Canoes. Excuse the out-of-focus photo, but it's difficult to focus on a ship pretty far away in the dark, let alone get a nice pic of it. Thanks very very much for your time, efforts and talents to get these valuable photos that we're enjoying. That one "glowing lights" photo is showing as an error-message. - I've seen it on your Flickr and it's a beauty with good flagship potential. Thanks again for your work.

I guess the image URL actually changes when edited in Flickr... weird. We ( Elwha on the Rocks and I) stayed there for about half an hour with our tripods and cameras out (you should've seen us, it was hilarious) waiting for the light to fade so that we could get the effect better. However for this contest I have better pictures to enter so I'll let Mr. On the rocks enter a similar photo of the Mal.

Malaspina was making her final Bellingham trip for the early season, so I hopped on a BC Ferry (8:15pm sailing on Coastal Inspiration, from Duke Point to Tsawwassen) to film her. Low light and a moving platform were challenges, but I wanted to try because Malaspina is rare to see in southern BC waters in summer, and she has her special gold funnel. Sure, she spent her entire off-season doing the Bellingham weekly run, but she was always in my neighbourhood under the cover of darkness. South Georgia Strait photos of an AMHS ship are only possible in the weeks near summer-solstice. - Next week, Columbia takes over, if she's ready to go by then. June 6, 2014, around 9:15pm, off of Vancouver. (more to come, in my next post)

A nice video of the venerable old Malaspina, who along with the Matanuska and Taku, have been around since the early days of the Queen of Prince Rupert. The longetivity of these old 'Spauldings' leads one to wonder how Alaska Marine has managed to keep them up to snuff longer than we were able to keep the QPR in useful service on Route 30? The other oldie that seems to have been spared decommissioning is of course the beautiful Coho. These old girls may be getting older but with their daily doses of vitamins, yearly physicals, and the best of skin conditioners, provides ammunition for the old adage that 'age is just a number' eh What IS the problem with the Columbia? Maybe a change of her personal physician is in order?

Here are a couple videos that I shot on the Malaspina back in late June (well, one is a timelapse, and a true one, but now it's a video). The first one shows the departure from the Auke Bay ferry terminal. The ferry backs up until it's well out in the bay then goes full forward all the way to Haines. The second one is a timelapse of the trip from Haines to the entrance to Auke Bay (it does not feature the complete arrival into Auke Bay because, let's say there was a late ferry there that needed my attention . This is made of photos taken at 10 second intervals and put at 25fps. You can see all types of Alaska Weather, though the rain doesn't last long. You might notice a cruise ship chasing and eventually passing us, this was Regent's Seven Seas Navigator underway to Sitka from Skagway.

Through two sailings on her on June 26 and 29, the Malaspina has become perhaps my favorite AMHS vessel. I then have a good photo essay of my trips on her and other sightings, those days. Let's get a horn for today! Here's the 5-minute warming horn being sounded at Haines. AMHS vessels sound a short blast 5 minutes before departing just in case there's still some people out on the dock. I did hear a beautiful 3-short airchime when she backed out of Auke Bay with the Kennicott, but unfortunately she did not do it again when I was on her recording the departure. Well, she still has a beautiful horn, and even with a short blast you can tell it!

When I was doing a google image search for something entirely unrelated, I came across some neat Malaspina photos from 1972. www.oil-electric.com/2011/06/willamette-geared-locomotive.html(Scroll down past the first 5 or so photos.) I wonder: is this the same location as where the stretch was done to the V class boats? I did a quick scan to make sure nobody has posted them before, but if this is a repeat, I apologize.

That's great, thanks for posting. The author of that website used to register here on this forum every few years, just to make a few posts each time that told us that "our information was wrong" on stuff, but not any helpful detail on what he disagreed with. Not very productive for us... But those images are nice; thanks for posting the link.

I wonder: is this the same location as where the stretch was done to the V class boats? Yes, it is. Stretches seem to happen predominantly between funnel & wheelhouse, and most importantly, ahead of the main machinery spaces (engine room) below the waterline. The following diagram (see upper half) indicates the place where BCF's 'Seven Sisters' were stretched. They are, of course, kin to Alaska's 'Blue Canoes', all being designs originating with the great naval architect, Phil Spaulding.

So back in late August when I was at Lummi Island on a Saturday evening I decided to go see the Kennicott coming past Lummi Island on her way to Homer. But when I looked on my ship spotting app it said that the Malaspina was departing Bellingham, not the Kennicott. At first I thought it was some kind of glitch, but as I soon found out it was sure enough the Malaspina on her way to Skagway. I still haven't figured out why she was leaving Bellingham (with passengers), maybe she was filling in for the Columbia and she was one day late? Anyways, here's a few pics: The ferries come in pretty close to the Island: Passing Lummi Island: Sailing off into the smoky sunset:

Two photos of AMHS's "First Lady", the MV Malaspina, sporting her golden funnel in BC waters just north of Addenbroke Island Lighthouse (maybe 90 minutes south of Bella Bella). This was taken in the morning fog on 10 August 2017. The Malaspina is still looking good after all these years ... The Mal is doing the Bellingham run, normally done by the Columbia during the summer months. Both photos © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Once again we see vessels of about the same age, the 'Malaspina' and 'Taku' on different ends of the scrap heap, although maybe like the 'Nanny' and the 'Burnaby', not that too far apart, but yes the 'Mal' looks very splendid especially with the gold funnel and State flag.
