I think WCK is right actually. That looks like Miners Bay way down in the distance to me.

Helen Point is the south entrance of the Pass, on the right hand side of the ship as you depart Village Bay or comming in from Swartz Bay. You are correct about where Helen Point is, and that ship really is rounding the point. What you see in the background is not a ferry-landing. It's various buildings near or at Miner's Bay, on Mayne Island.

From Helen Point, wouldn't buildings at Miners Bay look considerably further away than they do in that photo?

re the Q-Victoria photo: If you flip the photo horizontally, then it the ship might be entering Active Pass from the Tsawwassen side, with the Miner's Bay wharf in the background. In this case, the photo would be taken from somewhere near Bellhouse Park on Galiano. the flipped photo: ...oh the mysteries (edit) ps: I'm not stupid, just a bit slow. My theory is sunk because of the lettering of the BC Logo on the ship...

that is a ferry dock we are looking at and the only one in active pass is sturdies bay. even with a picture of a ferry off of miners bay the dock would be further back, and smaller.

I remain virtually certain that the photo of the Vic was not taken off of Sturdies Bay. The dock that is visible is not a ferry dock, either. On the other hand I am not certain that it is the Mayne Is shoreline with Miners Bay in the distance, either. But, if it is not there, or Sturdies, then where.
For now I will stick with my original location until someone gives me convincing reasons for somewhere else.

Hi Jim,
I have been able to guess your photos before so I'll give it a try here...
I don't believe the Vic to be at Helen Point. I have traveled between SB and TSA enough to know (As I am sure many others here). If the Vic was at Helen Point, putting the picture into scale, there would be alot more coastline visible of Mayne, and the dock would be only a blip in the picture. Since the Vic was primarily a route 1 vessel and given her proximity to the shoreline, my first choice is that this picture was taken from on board a sister near Naylor Bay. My second (And much less likely choice) is passing Sturdies Bay. Given where the two are passing each other, the Vic has to stay farther to starboard, than if she was transiting Active Pass solo. So, I would say Naylor/Miner's Bay in Active PAss heading to Tsawwassen.
Cheers,
Darren

Yes, very good photo!! Thanks for posting it! Although, in my opinion I think there is a little bit too much blue at the front. It looks like chocolate sauce all over a little kids face! (not in a bad way though) Maybe a little... what's great about this one is the fact that it's taken from an angle that gives a good view of the upper car deck opening as it appeared before they did the facial modification, but it isn't jutting out glaringly from the bow so the overall appearance of the Vancouver's visage in this case is quite pleasing. Absolutely incredible photo.

The dock visible in the background does not look at all like the Sturdies ferry slip. It does look like a small boat jetty. It also appears that the Vic was headed for Tsawwassen, and was perhaps 2/3rds of the distance between coming around Helen Pt, and making the big turn nothward off of Miners Bay.

Queen of Nanaimo @ HSB - ~1980 - viewed from BCR tracks DOT photo A beaut as per usual; thanks again, Jim, and thanks likewise to your brother. It's interesting to see the current Boathouse Restaurant under construction in that photo, just to the right of the public wharf www.boathouserestaurants.ca/2004/horseshoe_bay.htm

Carrier Princess at her berth in Downtown Vancouver where the new convention centre is being built, and a noticable lack of the current convention centre and cruise ship terminal, Canada Place, where Pier B-C can be seen If you look to the right of the Carrier Princess and back towards where Canada Place would later be built, you see the Guiness Building. It is a greenish colour and you can see two black strips that go up the side of the building. I used to spend a lot of Saturday mornings while my dad worked in his office looking out the window watching the various Rail Ferries, the Hovercraft, and the CP Ferry come and go. And of course all the other comings and going of the harbour. The boss had a corner office and never came in on Saturdays, so that is where my nose prints could be found on the windows. I was actually disappointed when Dad decided he didn't need to do a few hours work, unless of course we were going on a drive either to the airport or Horseshoe Bay . ;D Thanks for the pics Retro brings back lots of memories. I actually thought we had the same book so I checked. The series I have is by Evergreen Pacific, The Cruising Guid to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Cape Scott to Sook including Barkley Sound, by Don Watmough, 1998. I have been wanting to get the others in the series on the Sunshine Coast and Georgia Straight and north. Great aerial shots.

Thanks for the enjoyable little anectode; it's always interesting to hear stories from when we all began our interest in ferries and transportation, etc. You'd be wise to make a trip to Sidney, 'booktown' as they brand themselves, or one of the other used bookstore centres of our area the next time that you're on the wet coast, I can think of numerous locations to find many of the volumes of the series.

Nice shot of the Oak Bay. I guess I have just always preferred the original livery...she looks particularly sharp in it. Which brings me to the shot of the Illahee in your signature...another great shot but reaffirms my distaste for those stripes WSF slapped on...I'm glad they're gone!

Retro I bought mine in a nice little bookstore in "downtown" Duncan where my grandmother lived. One of the few stores that were surviving there. They had a nice selection of boating and shipping books.

Nice Shot of a Brand New Queen of Oak Bay...Looks kind of like she did before 2005. Doesn't Look that new, Though I guess it wasn't the best looking day to take a picture of the ferries.

Quite an Amazing Pic, Think that's the 1st Photo I've seen of a C Class About to Be Launched, Only thing I've seen other than that is a video of the Launching of the Queen of Surrey on Global News, Ironically they were talking about the Queen of the North, Ex. Queen of Surrey (I) and they showed the launching of the Queen of Surrey (II).
