I was just looking up some information on the Lasqueti Island Ferry on the site: www.lasqueti.ca/island-info/lasqueti_ferryOn that page is says: •The ferry service is run by Western Pacific Marine for BC Ferries Is this a route that is actually run by BCF but contracted out to Western Pacific Marine? Anyone have more info on this?

It is an unregulated BC Ferries route. I don't have a lot of info off hand, but there's a few of them sprinkled throughout BC's west coast. Lady Rose (the Company) services were unregulated routes for quite some time, not sure on their current status. Passenger only services provided on the same Rte as 25 is unregulated as well (Route 25u) as well as some Northern barge/pax services.

Coastal Ferry Services Contract lists the following "unregulated routes" that are contracted out by BC Ferries:
Dodge Cove - Prince Rupert Lasqueti Island - French Creek (Centurion VII) Kyuquot - Tahsis - Gold River (Uchuck III) Bamfield - Barkley Sound - Port Alberni (Lady Rose / Frances Barkley) Ahousat - Hot Springs Cove - Tofino Alert Bay - Sointula - Port McNeill (is this an additional passenger service?) Prince Rupert - Tuck Inlet Hartley Bay - Prince Rupert

In 2006 when I worked on it, the " Spirit of Yalis" was based in Sointula and operated as a School Boat for the High School students who would ride from Alert Bay to Port McNeill in the morning and home in the afternoon. ( The ferry schedule made for a long day for the students ) The Spirit would occasionally be called out for emergency ambulance runs if the ferry wasn't operating or available when needed. The boat would return to work in Vancouver harbour for the summer and remain up north during the school year.

On Dec.27th 2010, I visited French Creek Marina so that I could see the MV Centurion VII. - I didn't have time for a ride to the island; that will have to wait until next summer maybe. - here is the schedule, posted at the marina, near the boat-ramp: Company website: www.westernpacificmarine.com/================== - here she comes from False Bay, Lasqueti Island. The ship is in the middle of the frame: She's nearing French Creek marina. The islands behind her are Lasqueti near and Texada far. As she approaches the corner-entrance to the protected marina at French Creek:

More Centurion VII photos from Dec.27, 2010 at French Creek Marina. (photos taken with my 2-year-old Canon SuX-10-IS ) ----------- Here's the ship inside the marina compound, headed for her float: ----------------------- Views from different angles, of her at French Creek float: - notice the passengers disembarking from the stern

Centurion VII at French Creek marina: - her stern is the passenger entrance to the cabin, but also has covered and uncovered freight space. The covered area has shelves. - a peek inside the passenger cabin. Of course, there's a bulletin-board....

Went out to French Creek this morning. The wind was blowing and the waves were high. There were even windsurfers and kite surfers just north of French Creek (Columbia Beach?). We got there just before the Centurion VII left at 9:45. They're expanding the marina right now and you can walk quite a ways out from the marina and get a good view of boats coming and going. Only the Centurion VII was out today though. Here she is heading out of the marina and out across the strait: They appeared to do a zigzag course across to Lasqueti.

Okay, the name of this tread should be renamed Lasquitea Island Ferries since more than one vessel does operated this run.
Here is a video of mv Hollyburn leaving French Creek at 2:30 this afternoon bound for Lasquitea Island while replacing the Centurion 7 again.

Centurion VII back in service after refit.
I talked to a crew member today who works on the vessel and the ship had new engines installed this spring and is now back in service between French Creek and False Bay. Also the vessel was built in 1985 according to him.

Centurian VII, passenger only ferry, heading out from French Creek Harbour near Parksville, for Lasqueti Island, British Columbia. I just might do an excursion on this boat next spring or summer.

21 October 2022 Only thing is... what do you do when you get there? No public transport on the island, and you can't bring your car over. I wonder what the barge service costs to bring a vehicle. I've always been fascinated by Lasqueti... the largest population on our coast that doesn't have, and doesn't want, a vehicle connection with the rest of the province.

Yeah, Neil, I was looking into that and you are right. They don't want campers (no approved place to camp anywhere, I gather), but it is possible to do a B&B, from what I read. The ferry makes three round trips daily so you could do a day trip having maybe 6 or 8 hours on Lesquiti. You can take a bike with you (at an extra charge) which would allow you to see & get around a little more than you could on foot.
It also looks like that boat has no outside deck space for passengers (except maybe at the stern). So if one of your goals is photography you might find that shooting from that boat is not so good.
Maybe the money you might spend on a trip to Lesquiti might be better spent on something like the Uchuck III out of Gold River.

A couple of summers ago I made a trip over to Lasqueti Island to visit a friend who was working over there. If rustic/off grid is what you like, then that is the place to be! Spotty cell service, no electricity, dirt roads, unregistered or insured vehicles, the list goes on! There are some nice spots there for sure, such as Squitty Bay park at the south end. Would no doubt be a full day adventure on a bicycle to get there. The pub is decent, and that's right beside the ferry dock. We also went to the community hall there which had a live band playing that night. Great small community vibes there. In all, it was a great experience but part of me was happy to land back in French Creek.

Centurian VII arriving at French Creek Marina near Parksville, following run over from Lasquiti Island. Lasquiti has a nice pub with good food. Was on this island for ~90 minutes as part of a whale watching tour on Saturday.
