Can't help picturing Flugel wading into the water to get these pics, right up to his beard. I can almost hear the captain saying over the pa, "...and on our port side that floating Tilley hat is our intrepid ferry enthusiast Flugel Horn, in his neverending quest for ferry photo nirvana..."

More views of Malibu Princess, seen at her dock in Egmont BC. - September 18, 2012. Setting the scene: This is the spot where YoungLife campers destined for their Malibu summer camp (Princess Louisa Inlet) embark on their boat trip. In the building lobby, a collage of construction photos.

This is one of the water taxis that would take you to Savary Island from Lund. When I was there yesterday, the other boat left with six or eight people on board. A couple more photos of the R.S. Wood, taken in September 2012 at Lund, BC.

One of the Protection Island ferries, leaving Nanaimo's boat basin in the morning on November 24, 2012.
- a short crossing of Nanaimo harbour, but there are waves from other boats and seaplanes, and winds can also make it choppy.

Spirit of Yalis, seen at Sointula's small-craft harbour on December 29, 2012. She is a school-bus boat, used in Sointula & Alert Bay, and is also listed as a Vancouver harbour cruise boat. The word "Yalis" is used for the traditional lands of the 'Namgis first-nation at Alert Bay. By the way, the stern net-drum seen on the boat in background left, is an innovation that was invented in Sointula. This town was a major centre for fishing boat construction, repair and operations. A peek inside the school-bus boat

The main ferry to Newcastle Island from Nanaimo, for summer 2013. - the Grey Selkie, seen by me from Nanaimo Yacht Club area on August 25, 2013. With the Quinsam If BC Ferries management saw this photo, they'd recommend a cutback of sailings because of the low capacity utilization on this sailing. - of course, just like Denman and Hornby on a Sunday evening, the traffic is overloaded going the other way leaving the little island. - Yes, that is the Duke Point highway in the background. She's been listed for sale in adverts in Western Mariner magazine for the past few months. $250,000 asking price.

The Protection Connection ferry Island Mist, seen here approaching the jetty @ Newcastle Island near Nanaimo - 30 January 2014. This boat was originally one of the 8 lifeboats aboard the BC ferry vessel once known as the Queen of Surrey (later the Queen of the North). The Protection Island ferries will stop on request at Newcastle Island during the off-season when there is no direct ferry connection between Nanaimo & Newcastle. The round trip fare to Newcastle via Protection is $12 adult. On the return to Nanaimo you have a layover at Protection Island of 20+ minutes, just enough time for one beer at the pub there. Newcastle is an excellent day trip option in any season. Its a good place to stretch your legs, commune with nature, and get good ferry photos. photo © WCK-JST by Wett Coast, on Flickr

So... if you get them to drop you off on Newcastle, what is the arrangement for getting picked up from there? Swim ...
No, seriously, verbal arrangement with the boat's captain & exchange of cell phone numbers. I was dropped off at 9:30 at Newcastle with an arrangement to be picked up 2 hours later. As it turned out I was picked up at 1:30, this after an exchange of cell phone calls. It works out fairly well. PS: My thanks to Scott (BCFS) in finding out that it is possible to get to Newcastle during the off-season.

PS: My thanks to Scott (BCFS) in finding out that it is possible to get to Newcastle during the off-season. We had a similar experience on a Voyager trip earlier this year. We arranged for a 1:30 pickup, but it was a no-show. We could see the Island Mist sitting at the dock next to the pub, so I looked up the pub phone number on my smartphone, and asked them to send the ferry operator over to get us at Newcastle. The waitress did precisely that, and he was over about five-ten minutes later. Definitely a different kind of ferry experience...

Mrs. Horn and myself visited Newcastle Island on May 10, 2014.
We stuck to the southern end of the island, spending time at Bate Point, Brownie Bay, and the beach near the ferry dock.
Here is my sped-up video of the day. The last part features the Newcastle Island ferries. 2014 has only 2 ships. - The larger "Grey Selkie" which is shown near the end of the video, dropping off some wedding guests at the island. - A smaller ship, but not quite in the traditional pickle-boat design. This is the ship seen scurrying to/from the dock in the 2nd half of my video.
All of the company's traditional pickle-boats are being used at Victoria this summer, ferrying cruise-ship passengers about.
