The Nanaimo harbour pickle-boats serve as the ferry to Newcastle Island park. They are not the largest ships in the Nanaimo harbour. The pickle-boat captain's job is sometimes a lonely one, but comfortable and peaceful at times.

Perhaps BC's smallest foot-ferry, the Loon Lake ferry up in the UBC Research Forest North of Maple Ridge. The cable-ferry is manually operated, and there is no operator. Passengers just hop on and pull themselves across. And best of all, it's free! Maximum capacity is about 15 adults. Any more and the water starts gushing in through the floorboards. Fully loaded. Photos taken in 2007.

The habour ferries operator that serves Nanaimo's Newcastle Island has a number of pickle boats, but also uses a larger launch during the summer. - this launch is ex US Navy and they use it for camping groups and other large summer groups. Here's a look at the launch: - in the background is a dragon-boat race event. At the very top of my photo you can see the new Nanaimo cruise-ship dock. And a traditional pickle boat, as seen from Newcastle Island.

Last summer when we went to Newcastle, it was on board the GREY SELKIE both ways. Maybe they also use it when it's busy, because when we were on her, she was pretty full both ways. Nice little boat... quite roomy. I was imagining how she would make a nice little house boat/cruiser to go up and down the coast.

Here's the neat tokens that you get, for your return trip off of Newcastle. - I'm not sure how what the connection is with the kangaroo. There's a Newcastle down in Aussieland, so maybe that's the connection There's also a Newcastle in Britain though... maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=Newcastle,+Australia&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Newcastle+New+South+Wales,+Australia&ll=-32.898038,151.854401&spn=0.649179,1.234589&t=h&z=10 I found the answer to the question of why the harbour ferry tokens have a kangaroo image on them: - a trip on the harbour ferry (in Victoria or Nanaimo) is called a "Hop" by the company, hence the kangaroo reference.

Could it also make reference to the island's name, Newcastle Island, and it's potential connection to the city of Newcastle, Australia? Newcastle Island is named for Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coal mining was common to both areas. Sydney is by far the biggest city in New South Wales.

I think I'd already know about this if it existed, but are there any ferry or water taxi services running between Victoria and Ucluelet?

I think I'd already know about this if it existed, but are there any ferry or water taxi services running between Victoria and Ucluelet? No scheduled passenger ferries from Victoria to any of the west coast or east coast settlements on the island. Oh wait, is the Tees still in service? No, she was replaced by the Princess Maquinna..... (sorry, I've been reading ship history, and I just finished reading about the Tees, which served the west coast in the 1st half of the 20th century). You need to go back to that pre-1950s era to find passenger service from Victoria to Ukee.

The 3 floating school-buses for Gulf Island Secondary School - seen in Ganges harbour in October 2011 "Mistaya" in front, "The Graduate" behind her, and "Scholarship" is off to the left. No sign of Mrs. Robinson. The Graduate, in a reflective moment.
