Greetings, ferry fans!
I have created a thread for the exclusive purpose of showing photos of trips taken on detours that Washington State Ferries operates when a dock or bridge is out of service and an alternate routing is used. Some interior photos as well as scenic ones would be nice to include during the time period of the detours. Even shore side photos of ferries on reroutes are good to add on this thread. These detours include:
EDMONDS - PORT TOWNSEND
(Detour due to closure of the Hood Canal Bridge)
LOFALL - SOUTH POINT
(Detour due to closure of the Hood Canal Bridge) (Not ones before the Bridge)
EDMONDS - CLINTON
(Detour due to closure of the Mukilteo Dock)
EDMONDS - BAINBRIDGE
(Detour due to closure of the Kingston Dock)
SEATTLE - KINGSTON
(Detour due to closure of either Bainbridge or Edmonds docks)
SEATTLE - VASHON - SOUTHWORTH
(Detour due to closure of the Fauntleroy Dock)
This is an interesting subject as we don't see things or the scenery we would do on regular crossings.
Let's have fun on this subject!
Here is my first entry to this thread.
This was a double set of ferry trips taken in one day.
On the Ninth day of October, 1993, WSF began rerouting Vashon and Southworth traffic to Seattle due to work that was done at Fountleroy. This would last for about two weeks. The KALEETAN and ISSAQUAH were serving Vashon Island from Seattle. The KLAHOWYA and QUINAULT were serving Southworth from Seattle. The RHODODENDRON was shuttling between Vashon and Southworth. The ILLAHEE was down at Tahlequah. These photos were taken on Day One of the detour.
ENJOY!
Here we are at Pier 52, Colman Dock, Seattle. The QUINAULT is entering Elliott Bay from Southworth.
QUINAULT arriving.
QUINAULT entering the south slip. Time for me to get my ticket!
All aboard for Southworth!
We are underway. The KALEETAN is arriving Seattle from Vashon.
Inside the QUINAULT's cabin with Seattle in the background.
More of the same. This was her dining area.
The QUINAULT leaves her wake between Seattle and Southworth.
On the car deck at End Number One.
On the other side with the elevator.
On the center line at End Number Two. The traffic was very light on this trip.
End Number One with the elevator.
End Number One with the QUINAULT at the dock in Southworth.
End Number Two
The dining area.
From aboard the QUINAULT, we see the KALEETAN arriving Vashon with the RHODODENDRON in the slip as well as the TYEE.
This is a close up of the three ferries at Vashon. For those who are craving for any photos of a Superferry at Vashon, this is for you!
We're back in Seattle. QUINAULT readies for another trip to Southworth.
The QUINAULT departs for Southworth. My next ferry to ride on this detour comes into view.
The KALEETAN is arriving from Vashon. Again, it's time for me to dash over to the ticket counter!
All aboard for Vashon!
We are out on Puget Sound. The QUINAULT is seen returning to Seattle from Southworth with the Olympic Mountains in the background.
The Upper Number One End lounge of the KALEETAN.
From the other end.
Arriving Vashon Island aboard the KALEETAN. The RHODY readies for a trip over to Southworth.
The highness of the Sun Deck aboard the KALEETAN affords us to a birds eye view of the RHODY as she sails for Southworth.
The KALEETAN's spacious dining area.
End Number Two upper shelter with the RHODY in the background.
End Number Two lower shelter aboard the KALEETAN.
End Number Two lower lounge aboard the KALEETAN.
The Duty Free Shop aboard the KALEETAN. She began her international trips to Sidney from Anacortes in 1974.
Underway from Vashon Island.
On Puget Sound with Mount Rainier rising above the shoreline.
We are now arriving Seattle. We see the QUINAULT on her way on another trip to Southworth. The SPOKANE is readying for a trip to Bainbridge Island. It was a super day for ferry rides!
The QUINAULT, under the watchful eyes of the Space Needle, heads out of Elliott Bay. She was a nice looking ferry. Even after her rebuilding in 1986. Very lucky to have photos of her as well as her sisters.
Hope you all enjoyed this first entry of this thread devoted to WSF Detour Photos. Time to add yours!
