Looks like Kona Winds has brought a "new" boat into service on Route 13 - the Stormaway IV. Scott and I observed her two weeks ago at Langdale, and a quick Google search suggests she came online in February sometime. wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/4/vrqs-srib/d.aspx?lang=e&shipid=346309Here is a photo of her stern - preview.tinyurl.com/2uuru3uInterestingly she's about five years older than the III. =========== [moderator edit to fix side-scrolling problem, from crazy-long URL that took up way too much page width]

Here, we can post photos and videos of the Stormaway IV, the chartered route 13 vessel. We've already got a thread for the Stormaway III, but she was replaced not that long ago, so we need new thread. I'll start off with my Youtube of her arriving at Langdale on November 21st. She actually moves pretty fast. And some photos... I just happened to see what looked like a truck driving on the water, so I used my zoom-lens as a set of binoculars and saw that this pick-up truck had sidelights, and was rapidly approaching Langdale terminal. the first thought that ran through my mind was 'OH NO, terrorists!', then I remembered that this was the terminus of BCF's only passenger route. I found my way down to the float just in time to get some pictures of Stormaway IV arriving at her berth. She's actually a surprisingly fast little boat. It's almost a bit unnaturally fast-looking. Note how they haven't yet changed the poster from Stormaway III to Stormaway IV. Stormaway IV's headlights shining bright as she enters her berth. A natural-light shot: With flash. Another natural light shot: And a last dark shot of the Stormaway leaving Langdale.

Splitting hairs, perhaps, but this is a BC Ferries route, which they sub-contract...

Splitting hairs, perhaps, but this is a BC Ferries route, which they sub-contract... ...and I was using the ship itself as criteria for where it fits in. (I moved it from the BCF page to this here page......so I'll take the heat). This is an interesting situation, because the interplay of the 3 key variables: - route: is it a regulated route that BCF is responsible for? - crew: crewed by BCF employees or by other party? - ship: owned by BC Ferries or by other party? For this Stormaway IV instance, they score 1-out-of-3 on the variables. (for a scenario where there are 2-out-of-3, consider the new ships for Marine Atlantic and whether BCF would ever lease a ship to operate it themselves).

Today I finally had my chance to ride the Stormaway IV. Here are a few photos. Her stern. Notice the big puff ball near the bottom, yes, pets are allowed. Her bow. Her bow Her wheelhouse wheelcorner Note the seats down in the hull. Christmas cards from residents. Approaching her cut-out berth at Langdale. A bow shot. Taken from the QoSurrey. She's a fun little boat. She goes much faster than one would expect. The crew of two is friendly, and the residents didn't scowl at the 'tourist' like I had expected. They were all nice people The ship looks like it holds a bit more than 30, maybe 40 people.

LOL they don't scowl because they're obviously they are nice, but most of them are very part time residents there, too. Very very few full time residents on Keats - estimates vary wild but it seems to be between 50 and 100. My personal belief after living there for seven months is that it's the lower number. Gambier is substantially larger, but again there is a relatively small full time base. A lot of the full time residents do not use the Stormaway; a boat is a necessity of life and they have slips in Gibsons, Horseshoe Bay, or both.
The Stormaway IV itself, and thanks for the photos, looks essentially the same as the III. Also, do we know the III was actually replaced - I sort of doubt it. The IV looks smaller; the III is a fuel hound so it would make sense to reduce capacity in the shoulder and allow the larger boat in the winter. hile ussually keeping multiple sized boats for a small business would not make sense Kona has a lot of local business around the two Islands and Howe Sound that they can (or could) probably make it work.

Rumour has it the III is somewhere on Gambier - its actual status unknown. Stopped by Gibsons yesterday to rattle the marine rumour mill <G> The IV represents a 25% reduction in capacity. Kona Winds website shows the III and the IV side by side running towards the camera: www.konawindscharters.com/40%20pass_index.html

I just checked some photos I took of the floating docks there that day, and she's nowhere to be seen. So unless there's another dock at Gambier that she's moored at, then she's not there.

This is 100% speculation but maybe Gambier Harbour. That moorga eat New Brighton isn't appropriate for Kona storing a boat.
