As we arrived in Seattle, the Tacoma was cruising in ahead of us. It's another of the real disappointments of the trip, as I had a couple of blockbuster shots of the Tacoma with the Space Needle in the background, but had to scrap posting any of them because they weren't sharp enough for my standards. A poor combination of buffeting winds and a crappy telephoto lens that I shudder every time I go to use because I get decent results maybe 25 percent of the time. (But hey, it's only pixels, so it's worth the risk, right? See the previous Elwha photo, which was not only shot telephoto, but cropped in pretty tightly as well...) At any rate, I offer this photo in its place, of the Tacoma as we eased toward the dock. Despite having beaten us to Seattle by maybe 6-7 minutes, the Tacoma was completely empty, and was loading cars as we came to a stop. Enjoy!

The Tacoma came into Seattle yesterday and now has the WSDOT logo painted onto the stack. The Kitsap, Kaleetan and Puyallup also have gotten the logo. They seem to be making a comeback...I guess we'll see what happens when the Hyak is out.

They seem to be making a comeback...I guess we'll see what happens when the Hyak is out. As of today it isn't on the Hyak...although she is looking sparkly white again! No green paint has made it back onto the boat at all yet.

The original Flying 'T' "hubcaps" were sheet metal; whether aluminum or steel, I don't know. What I do know is that they were removed because of the corrosion problems they were causing on the stacks. Pity; I much prefer the boats without the obnoxious branding. DOT seems all excited about slapping their logo on the stack, but when it comes to sharing the money... it's like we aren't even in the room.

Added the Tacoma to my growing list of ferries I've photographed! Took a ferry crossing out of Seattle today. Offered wonderful opportunities to photograph the Wenatchee from Seattle, and the Tacoma. The ferry I rode back to Bremerton, of course? The M/V Kaleetan! Ferry races! by srosenow_98, on Flickr Taken from the M/V Kaleetan. Both the M/V Kaleetan and the M/V Tacoma (the former headed to Bremerton, the latter to Bainbridge Island) departed Colman Dock at exactly the same time. It was almost a head-to-head "race" out of the dock. For a while the Kaleetan held the lead, until the Kaleetan turned slightly south to head towards Rich Passage. Here's the info on the work being done to the Tacoma The Contract work consists of the following repairs to the Jumbo Mark II Class ferry M.V. Tacoma: dockside moorage; passenger cabin restroom renovation; passenger transit seating replacement; passenger cabin settee reupholstery and deck covering renewal; passenger cabin and sun deck lounge bulkhead cleaning; passenger deck cabin walk off mat installation and stairwell bulkhead vinyl installation; unisex restrooms renovation; elevator landing coating; passenger deck can lighting replacement; CO2 system release station alarm installation; interior painting; balance door installation; and other related maintenance work, as specified in the IFB

I suspect the peeling paint may have been due to applying it when the surface was wet (it was done in early 2007, IIRC).

Hmmm. That looks pretty bad for peeling paint as a result of a surface not being dried beforehand. If that were the case, the peeling paint would be everywhere. IIRC, last time I laid eyes on the vessel, the peeling paint was at No. 1 and No. 2 Ends underneath the bridge wings on the port side. Since I've never been able to get a good enough view, I can't tell if the other side was affected likewise, but I don't recall seeing any peeling paint elsewhere.
Makes me think something got spilled onto it and then contaminating it, or the surface wasn't properly prepped prior to painting. The large splotches of missing paint at No. 2 End especially makes me think the former happened.

I hope they did not get rid of the marbled patterns on the seats...Those look really good. If WSF is operating true to form, the tan seats will be darker colored. I'm not sure what's going on with the floors these days. The Chetzemoka and Salish have a new floor type that does not get buffed and waxed. When the Issaquah got it's new floor, it had the same appearance of the new boats. It's not shiny and not dull and it stays that way. This is what the Issaquah's floor looked like the week it started running with the new interior Here's the Chetzemoka as of 7/3. The Chetz does not have buffing equipment onboard. They only sweep and mop it. It's not nearly as shiny as they are when there's fresh wax on it. I'm looking forward to seeing the Tacoma's new stuff.

On that same flight, after leaving KSJC on the last leg, I did see the former Keystone ferry SAN DIEGO. She's still at Decker Island. That's the best I could do with my telephoto feature of my pocket camera. As I approached KLAX the day before, I was looking down the coast and was really thinking about the Steel Electrics ILLAHEE, KLICKITAT, NISQUALLY, QUINAULT, and the former BCF QUEEN OF ESQUIMALT, all at Ensenada. Interesting to note, I did see moving pictures of the Tacoma-Class ferries in a feature story on the Weather Channel on the old boob-toob in my hotel room in Hollywood. I just can't leave Seattle behind and seeing that city on TV in another area of this country of ours!

I was returning from the Hollywood area after enjoying a concert in the Greek Theatre the night before. My flight was from KLAX to KSJC to KSEA. Nice aerial photo of downtown Seattle and MV Tacoma. I love it when the planes approach the airport from the north and take you right over downtown, as was the case the last time I flew. I'm going to get on MV Tacoma tomorrow. I'll bring my camera and take photos if they have dramatically changed her cabin finishes in any way.

As promised, here are a few pics of MV Tacoma's newly refurbished passenger cabin. I really like what they did with it. It looks a lot like Walla Walla's cabin, only with some additional colours. I am SO glad they did not do the nasty lime green floor the Kwa-Di Tabil vessels have. I have to say Tacoma ranks up there with Walla Walla now in terms of having a nice passenger cabin look and feel. They also refurbished the restrooms which is very welcome. In the men's room, I was pleased to see they got rid of the trough-style urinals and installed individual urinals with privacy screens between each one. They also installed Dyson AirBlade hand dryers. They also installed the new-style cabin doors leading out to the pickle forks that I first saw on Spokane a couple of months ago

Otherwise the steel plates for the magnetic holdbacks probably wouldn't be rusty.

It's also starting to affect the central deckhouse on the sun deck and it's really starting to peel on the port side @ No. 1 End. Much worse than what it was when I last saw the vessel in March.
