Nahh, it takes a few more years. You should've seen the Hyak, Chelan, and Yakima all late in 2010. The Hyak and Yakima looked like they were painted with rust by a huge paintbrush. The Shame of the San Juans, they were! Both of them were horribly fraught with rust. The Chelan wasn't much better. Huge splotches of rust on the curtain plate and obvious rusty seams where some car deck ports were plated over from adding the upper gallery decks.

Well I can tell you that the rust in between the car deck windows was barely visible back in late January, and now you really see it. Plus the rain we got in the last few days doesn't help!

Anyone been up on the new Ferries wheel in Seattle on the waterfront?? I bet that would be a good place to get photos of the Seattle boats!

Anyone been up on the new Ferries wheel in Seattle on the waterfront?? I bet that would be a good place to get photos of the Seattle boats! I have been at the foot of it several times and it doesn't seem that bad, but it is way too overpriced. You'll also have to deal with glare from the windows. I think the best thing to do is to actually take the ferry, as it costs less and lasts longer

Anyone been up on the new Ferries wheel in Seattle on the waterfront?? I bet that would be a good place to get photos of the Seattle boats! The Ferris wheel will give you good visual angles to the ferry dock itself. However if you aren't looking for shots of Colman Dock and are in Seattle during business hours and want shots of the boats underway in Elliot Bay it's very hard to beat the 17th floor "deck" in Russell Investments Center (1301 2nd Avenue). Some views are obstructed but overall it's superb. The space is officially for "tenants" in the building but with like 60 different companies in the building they can't enforce it so many of us downtowners regularly eat lunch there and never get bothered and lots of people in the know take out of town visitors there. Any adult that's decently dressed and not being obnoxious isn't going to get bothered. Yes, I got a great shot of the Wenatchee up there in February. I just haven't posted them yet. I will post them later today, they are on my laptop and I don't want to turn it on at 1:15 am.

From last Friday, on a 8-ferries trip: From the Kaleetan, the Tacoma at Seattle. Awesome skyline reflections right here: MV Tacoma at Slip 3, Seattle with the Seattle Skyline rising above- Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Since the ropes were set back (but still in use), I got to take pics of the Bulwark name. I was taking pictures in regular mode when I remembered I had the A-DEP mode on my camera which (is supposed to, sometimes it doesn't work because the objects are just too far from each other) puts everything in focus through a lower aperture setting. So I used that and got a MUCH better shot than the times I did this on other ferries. I only have one carefully-selected photo of the MV Tacoma to share today, but I like it in many ways: - It shows the growing rust on the side of the ferry - It shows the green sun deck benches. The two other ferries of this class have white ones - It shows lots of people outside even on a cold day. They're all enjoying the sunshine, and that's pretty much what the definition of being a Washingtonian means - It shows the Duwamish railway bridge open in the background For the record the photo was taken on November 23rd from the roof of the Bell Street Pier. This is what it looks like when the auto deck sprinkler system is activated on the Tacoma. Part of the inspection the Coast Guard was doing yesterday to extend the Tacoma's COI for a month.

The MV Seawhaks Fan under the Space Needle en-route to Seattle last Wednesday. I'm referring to the 12th man flag/wrap on the stack to show her support to the Seattle Seawhaks. It's more discret than the Olympic Wraps on the Coastals, probably cost MUCH less than the coastals', and isn't going to stay there for 5 years (though it could - the Seawhaks are not leaving soon). The wrap isn't perfect though, as the very top of the flying T is still visible, but I still like it and I think it's cool. MV Tacoma en-route to Seattle - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr ---EDIT--- It seems like the sign lights up at night. Now that's way too cool! See for yourself here.

Last Sunday, I took my first ferry crossing in over seven months. Sailing aboard the Hyak in fog that I had never seen get that thick, was an interesting experience! Needless to say, I snapped off this shot of the M.V. Tacoma, departing Seattle. To give you an idea as to just how thick the fog was - on the other side of the Tacoma in the photograph - on a clear day - would be the west end of Queen Anne Hill. Visibility was less than half a mile. Sailing into a foggy abyss by Loowit Imaging - Steve Rosenow, Photographer, on Flickr
