I am guessing the Chelan will be in place of the Elwha and the Kaleetan and Yakima will be there but is the Sealth going to have to do duty up there over the summer?

Better yet, have the Kitsap go in for where the Chelan is going and have the Hyak come down to Bremerton.

Having the Kitsap doing the San Juans makes more sense than the Evergreen State. They will lose capacity on the Vashon run with the Evergreen State there, but they need the capacity more in the San Juans during the summer.

Will the Chelan be big enough for the Sidney run come the summer cause I know that route can get busy during the summer??. Especially the direct sailing to Anacortes which more people seem to take.

Well probably one of the reasons it was like that was because the morning sailings were non stop I think and the afternoon evening sailings made a stop or two. From the photos off the Evergreen Fleet site the Chelan looks pretty nice inside now. Even nicer than the Elwha. Would be neat to take a trip on her over to Anacortes!

I think some folks in the Islands have said that they would rather have MV Chelan on the international run rather than MV Elwha. Their thinking is that the larger capacity of MV Elwha could be better used in the Islands.
Perhaps WSF should also consider keeping MV Hyak in the Islands during the busy summer months, assigning a Chelan sized ferry as the 2nd vessel on the Bremerton, and assigning MV Evergreen State to summer inter-island service.

The non stop sailing during the summer should be in the evening and the sailing that stops at Friday Harbour should be the 11:20am like it is now so you could go to Friday Harbour spend the afternoon there and then continue on to Anacortes later in the evening instead of having the evening 6pm departure from Sidney be the one that stops then you have to stay over on Suan Jaun Island. That's just my opinion!

How long will the MV Issaquah and MV Sealth be out for repairs and maintenance this summer? Would they move MV Kitsap to the Vashon run and MV Hyak from the Islands to Bremerton? Looks like it will be an interesting summer!

Looks like it will be an interesting summer! Both will be out from 6/12 to 9/22. The contract for the Issaquah work ether hasn't been awarded/put out for bid or the WSF site hasn't been updated yet. I suspect the Kitsap will end up on the Vashon route, the Hyak on the Bremerton route, and the Evergreen State in the San Juans. -- LB

We do have extra demand here in Bremerton for the Hyak, why is the Yakima not going to be up in Anacortes?

That means that WSF will have extra capacity in the San Juans this summer for the domestic routes. The Chelan replaces the Elwha, but the Hyak replaces the Chelan.

If you look at the WSF vessel watch right now, the Yakima is going up the west side of Whidbey Island heading back to Anacortes.

The Yakima went into service for the Hyak and the Hyak is replacing the Kitsap on the Seattle to Bremerton route.

Better to take the stairs The new elevator on MV Hyak has been "out of service" all week according to WSF. Just wondering, do they have the galleys open on the Bremerton run yet?

Just wondering, do they have the galleys open on the Bremerton run yet? Yes. I think the Pt. Townsend-Keystone route is the only one to not have galley service restored yet. -- LB

They do have galleys on the Bremerton run, they have had them for 6 months or more I believe.

I got an update from a friend who works for WSF. The work on the Issaquah has been postponed until after the summer, freeing up the Kitsap to stay at Bremerton, most likely, and sending the Hyak up to the islands. Stay tuned though... From what I saw on the WSF web site, the contract for the work on the Issaquah has been awarded... still scheduled to be out for the summer. No mention of who was awarded the contract. -- LB

Probably haven't had a chance to stock it, as it's been up here the last couple of weeks where there has only been galley service on the Chelan... They must not be in a big hurry to get it stocked... unless the service bulletin is inaccurate, there's still no galley service. And the elevator is still out of service. -- LB

Isn't there more than one company providing galley service? It seems so confusing since the single contractor pulled out two or three years ago. If MV Hyak or another vessel changes routes, would that impact galley service? It must add to the confusion of why service is available on some vessels and not on others, even if they are serving the same route. My guess is that former WSF management is responsible for most of this mess

The same company does food service for all the routes except for the Vashon route, Mukilteo route (I'm assuming there's food service on that route now) and Pt. Townsend route (I don't think there's galley service on that route).
On the Vashon route, the only real issue is alcohol sales. The liquor licenses are on a per-vessel basis. The only vessels that Sound Foods (who has the contract for the Vashon route) has licenses for are the 3 regularly assigned vessels (Klahowya, Tillkkum, and Issaquah) and the Sealth (they had a license to sell alcohol on her last summer, so I'm assuming they still can do so).

What happens when MV Evergreen State or MV Kitsap is assigned to the Vashon/Southworth run? ;D Oh what fun!! At least the Kitsap has a galley. The only "food service" on the Evergreen State is the vending machines. Someone mentioned in another thread that the galley is unsanitary (I'm guessing WSF doesn't bother to maintain the galley since she is only used when there's nothing else in the reserve fleet). On a sidenote, ever since the Evergreen State replaced the Chelan on the Vashon route, the #1 & #2 boats don't switch positions at the end of the week (something that has been done since the major schedule changes in September 2003). -- LB
