Yeah I got to ride the Hyak while she was there. It was quite unusual. For some of us when the Hyak is at Kingston everything is right in the universe.... Go back far enough, and some would say everything is right in the universe when Hyak is at Bremerton, her home for the first 13 years of her career. Of course, Hyak still puts time in at Bremerton when not at Anacortes.

Probably because she was there in her early years of service. Except the Hyak didn't enter into regular service at Kingston until 1990, when she was already 23. The first fifteen years were at Bremerton, as already mentioned.

I have ridden the Hyak at Bremerton as well. It seems like shes in her place there too. Personally, I'm glad she is leaving the SJ islands.

To be honest with you, I feel the exact opposite about her being replaced by the Samish in the Islands. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I hate the thought of the Samish going to the Islands, she will just be way to crowded, like the Kitsap at Bremerton. I understand that she will be easier to load, but really, loading at Friday Harbor and Orcas takes about 50 minutes, and I can't remember a time when a Super couldn't finish loading/unloading in that time frame. Her cabin will be packed full with tourists, and it will be a huge downgrade from the Hyak in my opinion. Also, Bremerton can have the Kaleetan and the Walla Walla, and nobody gets downgraded. Time will tell if the Samish is adequate in the Islands or not, but I highly suspect that she won't be.

You could count the Sun Deck as a second cabin deck if you add ventilation inside and hatches at the open end of the shelters. The hatches could be closed whenever it's cold outside to preserve the number of useable seats commuters/vacationers could use in the shelters. This is the same in New York as hinged promenade windows aboard the BARBERI-Class Staten Island ferries could be closed during cold days there preserving the number of useable seats for the same purpose above.

WSF's Fleet Page info on the vessels state that the supers have a passenger capacity of 2000, and the Olympics are 1500. Still, that should be more than adequate for the islands. I think the Olympics are just about perfect for island duty. The wider lanes and walkways on the car deck should make the loading and unloading go quicker than on the Supers, and I doubt that Friday Harbor's passenger numbers come close to what Bremerton gets, so my opinion is that the Supers are better suited for that route, for the extra passenger capacity. Yes, they still have to deal with the narrow car deck lanes and loading/unloading issues, but Bremerton is a much simpler route with none of the inter-island loading issues, and there is a little bit of padding built into the Bremerton schedule, which effectively adds to the dwell time.

The Olympic Class boats do not have evacuation slides on the auto deck and they are wider than the Supers. Based on what I have seen, they can hold more vehicles than the Supers. The extra width in the tunnel lanes makes is very easy to put "normal" sized cars in between two trucks or RVs or what not. I don't see the 1500 passenger capacity being a problem, except for the rare occasions when there are two events happening in Seattle at the same time. As for the Supers, I believe the passenger capacity has been reduced (bu USCG-on the COI) to somewhere around 1900ish. From what I have heard, the "average" weight of a person has gone up in the past years, resulting in reduced passenger capacity for the supers.

I don't see any problem with the Samish in the San Juans during nice weather. If/when there is a rainy and/or cold day, it will be a different story. IMO WSF should have included indoor passenger space on the sun deck. The main passenger cabin is rather small for the amount of traffic on the Anacortes/SJI route (during bad weather conditions, or if there are not enough crewmembers to open the sun deck). When it comes to passenger amenities, the Supers are the better choice. As for the auto deck space, the Olympics have an advantage. Super: 382' 2" long by 73' 2" wide Olympic: 362' 3" long by 83' 2" wide

The interiors may look bad. but other than that they are fine boats compared to the KDTs.

Here's a few photos from my ride on the Hyak's very commuter heavy 5:35 sailing from Seattle to Bremerton. (I will not bore you with the reasons why I think she should be in the Islands, I promise. ) So I unfortunately wasn't able to get any exterior shots of her in Seattle since I almost missed the sailing, so I'll start with this picture of her sundeck: The wake after making a tight turn to port in Rich Passage: Her pilothouse: An empty picklefork, it's very small but the huge sundeck makes up for that: Her cabin, deserted as everyone is already lined up to get off. It seems to be in better condition than the much newer cabins of the Kaleetan and Yakima, and I don't think that she has had much of her upholstery replaced, has she? Ready for her 6:45 departure back to Seattle: And finally, turning out of Bremerton:
