When was the Hyak’s green stripe fixed? Everything is previously read indicated that it was fixed rather quickly but perusing online I just found a picture of a brand new Goodtime III (built in 1978 if memory serves correct) with Hyak in the background with the green stripe too high. Virginia V is also featured in the photo. There's a picture of it in The Evergreen Fleet with the "correct" stripes, so prior to 1971. I was under the impression they fixed it at the first yard period as Demoro mentioned in the book it was "quickly changed" to match the other three boats.

I’m going to do some digging. Maybe it’s an incredibly realistic painting that looks like a photograph. That could explain the discrepancy. Otherwise we have a time traveling Hyak or a time travelling GT3. GT3 was definitely built in the late 70s so the Hyak having a high stripe makes no sense.

Here's a video I did of a tour of the Hyak back in January. I figured I'd do this before it gets retired; at the time, we were thinking it would be retired this year, not in 2019. Anyway, enjoy!

Rode on Hyak Saturday and Sunday to and from Orcas. I took some pics of the interior this time, thinking I may not get many more, with Hyak's impending retirement, whenever that occurs. So, without further delay, here is Hyak and her vintage 1967 interior: Something new: Provisions Cafe has these large decals on the main passenger deck level at the stairways to the upper cabin Ah, those lovely Eames Chairs. Only Hyak and Elwha have them now, and only Hyak has them with the original seat covers Love the sunlight patterns the bench seats created in this shot. How do you like WSF's solution for keeping people from going upstairs? More sunlight patterns Lastly, we were first in line for Saturday's voyage over to Orcas, so we got one of the prime front positions behind the bow netting, especially as this was a direct Anacortes to Orcas sailing (no Lopez or Shaw). I didn't take any pics of the car deck this time, outside of this one, but suffice it to say, it's very rusty. I kind of doubt it will get a new paint job if Hyak's retirement date is in the near future I hope you all enjoyed a step back into yesteryear. In some ways, it's kind of cool that they maintained Hyak's original decor. Not everything is original. The lighting was changed out years ago, but I believe the seats and tables are all original.

You're correct. The benches were largely reupholstered several years back to a uniform tan, and the floor tile was mostly replaced with the white tile, but it's pretty indistinguishable from original. The most visible change is the removal of the "ice cube tray" light fixtures. And as someone who had to change lamps in those fixtures, let me tell you, they're no great loss.

A little snippet from Gov. Inslee's Transportation Budget request:
"Maintain the 144-car MV Hyak as a second service-relief vessel to prevent service disruption and capacity reductions. ($6.3 million 2019–21)"
A wise choice in my opinion. Hyak (and Tillikum) should both stay at least until the first Hybrid shows up.

Anyone else dreading the Hyak's decommissioning? I've seen other vessels be decommissioned, but I'm definitely struggling with this one a little bit. Heading to Seattle soon to hopefully get one more ride in while I still can.

Heading to Seattle soon to hopefully get one more ride in while I still can. If the layup boards Snowy Ferries posted are any indication, it appears Hyak will be at Bremerton until July, then in reserve until Oct 7 or so, so there's a little time left to get a last ride. Given the problematic nature of the fleet, I would not surprised to see Hyak in active service sometime during the summer, potentially extending last ride oppourtunities. But, yes, it does indeed look like Hyak will be decommissioned in October.

The Hyak's last week in service is planned for the end of June. No relief or layup is currently planned, and the vessel will be retired then, per my inquiries to WSF. A "celebration" of sorts is in the works, I'll provide further details when it's been confirmed.

Since she got skipped on her MLU, her propulsion controls are all pretty much as-built from 1967. And frankly, she's a pretty snappy handler. I won't miss the skinny car deck, though.

My first job on a ferryboat was in 1978 on the Hyak as an assistant engineer. Fun boat to turn the wheel on, and listen to those four turbochargers spool up.

I have confirmed with WSF Representatives that the final Hyak sailing is blocked at the 2105 from Seattle on Monday June 17. Unfortunately, there will be no block of relief period out to October as the boat is ushered out ahead of schedule. Event planning is in the works and I'll keep you all up to date in the coming weeks.

I really don’t follow Washington State Ferries that closely, but why are they are retiring the MV Hyak a year earlier compared to the long range plan?

I found this interesting paragraph in the Superferry section of Harre Demoro's "The Evergreen Fleet." It would be awesome if this type of thing could happen with the Hyak in the near future.

What vessel will be replacing it on the Bremerton route? Hyak has been a reserve vessel for awhile now, most often subbing for ferries at Bremerton and Anacortes. This summer, it will be Chimacum and Walla Walla at Bremerton. Other times of the year, Bremerton's regularly scheduled vessels are Chimacum and Kaleetan.

Yesterday I got to ride aboard the Hyak on its final round trip out of Bremerton. Definetly a bittersweet moment as I will be sad to see it go, but I'm glad that I was able to take part in this final sailing. Btw this is a Photo Heavy post, so here we go! We'll start with the classic Bremerton thru-shot as she approaches the terminal for the second to last time She's still one of the better looking ferries in the fleet in my opinion; a much cleaner design than the newer ferries. I love that she still has the old style pilothouse windows too. Boarding in Bremerton; this is the last time she will ever take on passengers here Quick look at her retro cabin before it fills with people. At least we know that bland brown interiors will be preserved for years to come... Overhead ramp being raised with her replacement waiting in the wings And we're off! The Hyak's last commercial sailing from Bremerton is underway. Her builder's plaque is looking quite faded after all these years View from the sundeck looking aft towards Rich Passage Speaking of that awesome Super class sundeck, here's a view looking towards Seattle Sailing towards Seattle for the last time Docking in Slip 2. Just like the ferry, this slip will soon be replaced.
All aboard for the final sailing of the mighty Hyak! Here she is loading with the Tacoma in Slip 1 Ramp is up! This is the last time the number 2 end of this boat will see commercial service, for WSF at least. Exiting Eliot Bay for the final time. My apologies for the slightly blurry pic! The galley looked pretty sparse; I guess there's no reason to restock at this point Speaking of the galley, let's get one last look at the Hyak's unique galley seating before it closes. After this, the Elwha will be the only ferry remaining with this style of cafeteria seating. A quick look at her large upper solarium as the sun goes down The darkness covers up the immense rust that has accumulated on the cardeck in the Hyak's final years. It's a shame that she has to retire in such a condition, but it is what is. Approaching Bremerton with the Walla Walla sleeping in Slip 2. Again, my apologies for the blurry pic! I didn't want to carry a tripod around for three hours... And just like that, the Hyak's final sailing is complete. A new crew is boarding to take her back to Eagle Harbor. One last look at her upper cabin before we disembark. The upper cabin of the Supers is one of the best features of any WSF in my opinion. One last shot aboard the Hyak of her lifering and name board A quick lookback as the last few passengers get off
Docked at Bremerton, waiting for a broken classic car to be taken ashore. I guess that's fitting as a final car to get off this vintage ferry. So long, Hyak! Thank you for your loyal service to so many of us Washingtonians over the years. You will be missed by many, myself included. To finish this post, here's a quick compilation of the Hyak's final landing signals, and whistle salutes from the other Seattle ferries as she made her final voyage.

I rode her for the only time when the Evergreen State was slated to retire. I always have associated this class of WSF ferry with Seattle. Thank you for this!
