Until they get the Illahee fixed or the 144s hit the water, looks like it.

SS Shasta: The Evergreen State hasn't found a new home. She's returned to her home of forty years. Point of order. Seriously, though, assuming the Illahee gets her hull rebuilt (which will suck up the remains of the non-existent money), that will probably tie up the other two and leave us the Evergreen for the interisland for half the year. A fine place for her to spend the last years of her career.

A fine place for her to spend the last years of her career. Assuming that MV Illahee completes her rebuild, would the assumption be that she would work as the second vessel at Port Townsend/Keystone and MV Evergreen State would be in the Islands during the busy summer season (similar to this year with MV Nisqually and MV Klickitat at Keystone). Seems like that would make good sense. Having only one Steel Electric repaired would really create a public uproar in my opinion. The communities involved are very dependent on the summer tourist season.

That is, as far as I know, the game plan. It makes sense. Whether or not sensibility is actually a factor, we shall see. ;D Either way, it greatly amuses me to have her home and in a situation where I can still think of her as 'the big boat.'

Wonder why MV Klahowya is replacing MV Evergreen State in the Islands and MV Evergreen State is replacing MV Klahowya at Point Defiance? Does this relate to Evergreen being scheduled for maintenance/repairs shortly? Has MV Klahowya ever been in the Islands? A first?

She has rarely left her gig at Vashon in the 50 years she's been in service. Which also reminds me...have they got her gold stripes on yet? She's 50 this year. My guess at this point would be that once they get the Rhody done at Todd that they'll swap and get the Evergreen State in once the Rhody is out. Just a guess, but that would make sense, Point Defiance being closer than Anacortes.

re MV Klahowya:
- The San Juan Islands are prime vacation destinations, and so it makes sense that the MV Vacation State would sail in the San Juans....

There were only a few times the KLAHOWYA has seen service at other runs. One memorable incident happened in 1979 or 1980. She lost a rudder on her Vashon Island run! Don't know if it has been raised, though. At this time, the TILLIKUM was at Kingston. Both swapped routes and the KLAHOWYA ran as a single-ender at Kingston (one of the teachers at my high school was jokingly remarking about this on his commute to and from Kingston). This was during the Kingston downsizing and the Super/Jumbo assignment on the Edmonds-Port Townsend run after the Hood Canal Bridge sinking. After the Hood Canal Bridge reopened, it had to be closed again for further work. The Lofall and South Point docks were still intact. Both the KLAHOWYA and TILLIKUM worked together during this brief closure and I took a ride on the TILLIKUM on this run. Oh yes, their galleys were open on this short crossing!

Oops, I need to read better
That answers the question.
I deleted my previous post, as it looked silly.
Anybody know if the Tillikum's galley will be open at Bremerton? (if not, I will find out tomorrow night)

How is the repair of the E-State going? Any more problems found or is it smooth sailing as it were? Is she still on target for a return in July/Aug time frame?

I've been told the work on the Evergreen has been going very, very well. And FYI, she should be returning for the start of summer schedule on June 22nd.

The Old Warrior was, last I heard, checking out of Todd's this AM and heading for Eagle Harbor. I would anticipate that she's probably got a bit of "whatnot" type work to have finished before coming home to the Islands for the next few years. I know the long-range forecast from WSF is always a bit fuzzy, but I'm delighted that it appears at this juncture that the old girl is going to finish out her career in her true home port.

Looks like the Evergreen has taken over for the Sealth already on the Inter-Island run.

SEATTLE -- The historic 136-foot schooner Adventuress has run aground near Orcas Island, and two Washington ferries are assisting, the Coast Guard told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.
No one was hurt, the Coast Guard said.
The boat is grounded in Wasp Passage between Orcas and Shaw islands.
Chopper 7 is heading to the scene.
The boat, a two-masted, gaff-rigged schooner, was built in Maine in 1913 and came to Seattle in 1952, where it serves as the flagship of Sound Experience, a non-profit organization that carries more than 3,500 passengers each year on educational expeditions, according to the group's Web site. The Sealth and the Evergreen are the assisting ferries. And here's a photo of the Adventuress aground: bp3.blogger.com/_74xsaE5pCdo/SGAC9bFksQI/AAAAAAAACCA/xP-6zlYCmaU/s1600-h/%3D%3FWindows-1252%3FB%3FSU1HMDAxMDMuanBn%3F%3D-765463

The 25 June 2008 photograph by BrianK of MV Evergreen State at Friday Harbor is beautiful! Does she have some new paint? How does she look after her trip to the yards? It's great to see the "First Lady of the WSF Fleet" back home in the Islands where she belongs.

It's great to see the "First Lady of the WSF Fleet" back home in the Islands where she belongs. Having seen her close up (as we always seem to be late getting into Orcas and the Evergreen is inevitably waiting for us to get out of the dock) I can report that no, she hasn't gotten any major new paint. They have repainted her name, which had been crusted over in rust, and it looks like they pressure washed the green moss/algae that was streaking her sides. I took this on the 2nd. You can sort of see the darker streaks on the front end there where the paint is a little thin, and the darker green rectangle where they touched up her name. When not looking through a window on the Chelan it's much more evident.

I figured as such. I could see the old gal from the West Seattle Bridge while she was at Todd and I didn't see any kind of painting activity. It looks like she got some security upgrades (those cages on the top deck), but it doesn't appear any security cameras were installed (no signs of new attenae or a new box (similar to the elevator equipment box) on the top deck).

I added about 30 pictures of the Evergreen State from my recent travels in my gallery HERE. It's always too hard to pick and choose!
