That would mean 'the installation of a wireless LAN.' ;D
They're wiring the boat for the company intranet, would be my guess, so we can actually have a computer for company business. I don't know if that will include public Wi-Fi or not.

Does Evergreen have different type of engines than her sisters? They seem to be rated as having the same speed, but I saw somewhere that the Evergreen's engines or electrical systems are quite different. Thanks for info!

Yes, she does... we've covered that elsewhere; the Klahowya and Tillikum have GM-EMDs, and the Evergreen has Storks-Werkspoors. I don't know what model but their names are Rosie and Nadene...

This might be old information on the engines. A quote from by Harre Dmore's book "The Evergreen Fleet" page 132 says: "Among the items included in the sale of Puget Sound Navigation Co. to the State in 1951, were several war supplus diesel-electric engines removed from Destroyer Escorts. It was decided to use thse engines in the new ferries in 1954."
For what it is worth ?

Yes, it's old info. The old GM-EMD 278s were removed in 1988 and replaced with the Storks. The Klahowya and Tillikum also had the 278s until their refurbishments in 1995 and 1994, respectively.

Just part of the house and the interior of the auto deck. Possibly the interior of the cabin. Everything they could paint without actually putting it in drydock and bagging it off.

Does anyone have an update on the Evergreen's recent paint job and other yard work? Seems like MV Spokane received very little new paint. Wonder why these projects were promoted by WSF as painting?

(A) Yes. I answered that on August 10. (B) Who knows? I haven't seen the Spokane... the Evergreen's paint was mostly interior work, particularly the auto deck. It did need paint there; it just needed it elsewhere, too.

It was hard to tell what was painted on Spokane. When I rode Spokane on Saturday, it looked like very little was painted, even on the inside. The car deck certainly did not look like it had a fresh coat of paint. What I noticed most about Spokane, as I mentioned in the Spokane/Walla Walla thread, were the upgrades to the galley and restrooms.

Any updates on the Evergreen? Is she still in the Islands or at EH for repairs?

Not back in service yet (Hiyu still in the San Juans). Other than that, I have no other info (Google news search didn't bring up anything at all.

According to the latest maintenance schedule, the Evergreen State will be filling in for the Rhododendron when she goes in for annual maintenance in February (the Sealth will take over on the inter-island route during that period).

Looks like Evergreen is being scheduled for major yard work again this year. Hope WSF will scrap their foolish idea of an early retirement for this great lady!!

Hope WSF will scrap their foolish idea of an early retirement for this great lady!! Early? She's 56 years old. If the state does the right thing here and secures funds for the construction of at least one 144-car ferry, and they build that vessel in 2014 as currently scheduled, Evergreen may possibly be retired then, at which time she will be 60.

I was about to say that 56 years of service hardly qualifies as 'early' but kahloke beat me to it. The 'return on investment' has been steadily diminishing on the Evergreen for years; as much as I love the old girl, there comes a time when you have to give up. Keeping these boats up, especially the older ones, is a lot like trying to restore a classic car... while it's being used as your everyday driver. Sooner or later you lose the battle.

Just curious what's up with the Evergreen State....she sat empty today tied up at Coleman dock with no one paying any attention to her. Seems odd she would take up dock space here of all places. Also, I thought I read awhile back that federal funds were provided to give her a new paint job....if so, it clearly didn't happen. Anyone know what's going on with her? Attachments:

Evergreen came down to Seattle from the islands Monday night. I know this because I spotted her off Kingston around 9:00 Monday night. As you showed in your photo, she was tied up at Colman Dock, Slip 2, all day yesterday. She is gone this morning, probably over at Todd. Evergreen is scheduled to be in drydock until about the middle of August. I'm sure exterior painting will be part of the work she is receiving. They had already painted parts of Evergreen last year, the parts they could do without being in drydock.

Has anyone got a good look at Evergreen since she completed her recent yard work and painting? How does her paint look? I assume that the repainting has been completed.

She does indeed have fresh paint. She looks like... well, a ferryboat that's been freshly painted.

The Evergreen State ferry @ Friday Harbor, as seen from the Elwha: - from October 26, 2010. E-State was working as the inter-island ship. ----------- - interesting anchor. E-State, as seen from the Elwha's sundeck. As we depart from Friday Harbor, the Evergreen State moves from the tie-up slip to the main berth: Last glimpse of the grand old ferry, as we depart past Brown Island.
