The bridge is a causeway.
The ferry looked essentially the same as the HIYU. The only difference was that the sides of the passenger lounges were open and a railing installed instead of windows. There were no need for insulated lounges there in Honolulu. There were glass windows at each end of the sheltered lounges, exactly like what you see on the HIYU.
A drawing is forthcoming someday soon.

Where is the MV Hiyu? With the recent mishaps and delays in the annual maintenance schedule for several vessels, would the following make sense?
Send MV Hiyu to the Islands for inter-island service and shift MV Nisqually back to Port Townsend-Keystone as the second vessel.
Has there been a delay in recertification of MV Hiyu for active service?

'Active service' implies that she's going to be leaping out of Eagle Harbor and hitting the run... the boat is really not practical for operations except perhaps at South Vashon or in the San Juans as the interisland boat (in a huge pinch).
*edit* teach me to read the post more completely... I think the Cathlamet will be back before too long, so the Hiyu won't need to be activated quite yet.

Maybe the Hiyu would be good as a second ship on the Port Townsend-Keystone run in the off season....?

Maybe the Hiyu would be good as a second ship on the Port Townsend-Keystone run in the off season....? She can't be used on that route (as well as any other route that crosses major shipping lanes).

With the new STEILACOOM II in service down in the South Sound, can WSF use the 54-car CHRISTINE ANDERSON?

Make PT-Keystone a one boat route again, that is all they have. Either that or ditch the inter-island run.

It looks like it's GPS doesn't show up on the vessel watch page. Not that it matters, though. It is just a thrill to see the Hiyu back in service for a while.

What about the Tillikum? She was working Vashon while the Cathlamet was down. As far as I know she isn't due for yard work right now either. I take it she is at Eagle? If so what's being done?
Are there draft issues on Pt.Defiance/Tahlequah that would preclude using a boat of that size? I know the Rhody draws very little water compared to an Evergreen State class boat.

The Tillikum is probably undergoing annual maintenance. As for draft issues, I really don't know. WSF does plan on using an Evergreen State class vessel (probably the Klahowya) down there once the Rhododendron is retired.

Let's see--in order:
I'm sure there were sailing waits, although the traffic fluctuates between north and south Vashon to meet whatever boats are available. If a Steel-Electric shows up on the south end, I hear they tend to get the traffic to fill it.
The HIYU does not, to the best of my knowledge, have a transponder that allows it to be seen on Fleet Watch. The venerable Flying Saucer was placed in standby/semi-retirement status in 1998, just when the transponders were being installed.
The TILLIKUM is getting a bit of yard time at the moment, but I couldn't tell you what's being done. Bottom line is that she isn't immediately available right now. There aren't any draft issues to my knowledge at either end of the run, but it's also been five years since I've seen the south end of Vashon anywhere other than Google Earth. (Wouldn't it be cool if they refreshed the imagery on that end while the Hiyu was there? ;D)

Probably. The last few morning sailings and first few afternoon sailings (on either side of the mid-day tie-up) for the Rhody always overloaded five years ago, and I don't see why that would change.
