hi just doinf some researchon our vessel and ran across this thought this might be interesting so some of you. We have the exact replica sister ship to the HIYU. Our vessel was the old ford island ferry out of pearl harbor. It ran a ferry system to and from ford island and pearl harbor. Our Boat is named Hokulani O Kona means Heavenly star of Kona. We purchased the boat at an auction and are in the process of obtaining a COI thru the coast guard --this has been quite difficult as our plans are in bad condition. We are thrrilled to see another ferry exactly like ours!! Our use for our vessel is to be a fishing platform 3 miles off the coast of Kona, We will shuttle customers out for a great day of fishing, food, and fun. Just thought it was interesting

With the Steel Electrics out, they don't have any spare boats right now. They might have to press her into service if they have a breakdown. The Sealth and Hyak are the only other two boats that are extra, and they are both getting maintanence right now.

She almost will certainly be filling in for the Rhododendron when she goes in for maintenance and annual inspection near the end of January.

She almost will certainly be filling in for the Rhododendron when she goes in for maintenance and annual inspection near the end of January. She's supposed to be taking over for the Evergreen State as I-I boat fairly soon. I think they'll probably kick loose the Evergreen for Point Defiance when the Rhody goes out as the I-I traffic in the winter is pretty slow. If my memory isn't faulty they even tie up the I-I boat on the weekends in the winter.

NICE PICTURES Would it also make sense to move up the maintenance/annual inspection of MV Evergreen State so that she will not have to be removed from service in the middle of the busy summer season? I think MV Hiyu replaced Evergreen for a week or so last July when the larger capacity was clearly needed.

There's no telling... sometimes it's hard to rearrange shipyard time, as the local shipyards occasionally have to deal with other clients besides WSF. But if there were yard time available, I agree it would make sense to get the Evergreen run through during a slower time of year when the Hiyu can be put into service on a practical basis.

WSF has to provide an emergency boat for Pierce County with the Christine Anderson on the PT-Keystone route, so the Hiyu must be going there.

That's more likely, given what I've discovered on the inside track. Neat drawings of the Hiyu! I was about to pick bones about the ladders running up the side of the boat, but those are a new install, as are the depth charge life rafts. I wondered how they were going to handle that... cute boat. One of my favorites, and the first one I worked on.

Looks like the MV Hiyu will not be heading to the Islands just yet. Wonder what is the problem? Apparently workers found a damp area in a void space. No mention if this was in the same area that was repaired earlier.

I see that as of 6:00pm Sunday that the Hiyu is not at the Friday Harbor tie-up slip. Since they have not turned on her vessel tracking display on the WSF webpage, she's a little hard to follow.
Does any member know where she is today?

Does any member know where she is today? Right where she should be. you can go here: www.shinemicro.com/Live.aspsign up for a free account. If you go to the "Try the new google earth version" at the top of the screen when you get to the northwest over view, you can click on each little green arrow and it'll tell you what boat it is. If it only gives you the MMSI # you can put that into this: wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchShip.jspwhich will give you the ship name. A heads up though--for some reason on the google earth version the Steilacoom II comes up as the "Brandywine."

Is the Hiyu able to keep to the schedule and how about capacity issues?

I am looking at a copy of the spring schedule right now, and it appears WSF wrote the San Juans schedule for the Hiyu, with extra time added in for its slower speed (eg. 45 minutes alloted for travel between Lopez and Friday Harbor instead of the usual 40 minutes). The schedule also has the other vessels making periodic inter-island stops to help pick up the slack. I've not taken the inter-island recently, so I don't know how well this schedule is working in regards to capacity, but I would imagine Hiyu has some full sailings.

MV Hiyu goes back to work on 2 June on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route and the Rhody shifts to Anderson Island to replace MV Christine Anderson which must go out of service for emergency repairs. An interesting change in vessel assignments .

This isn't the first time it's happened... the Hiyu sat in for the Christine Anderson in 2000 when the latter had a blown engine. WSF has had an agreement with Pierce County for years in this regard. Besides, if WSF has the new boat in its custody, we really can't refuse to provide a vessel, can we? ;D

The Hiyu provided supplemental trips late last week, then became the only vessel Saturday afternoon after the temporary repair for the Christine Anderson failed. The Rhododendron/Hiyu switch occured a day earlier than scheduled.
