Is the MV Hiyu going back to work after Labor Day? I see that the MV Cristine Anderson is scheduled for yard work in early September which might move the Rhody to Anderson Island.

I don't know what they were doing with Hiyu today, but she followed our ferry into Eagle Harbor tonight around 6:00. I was on my usual 5:30pm sailing from Seattle, which was MV Tacoma today.

The Hiyu had some problems with the currents at Tahlequah yesterday morning. They couldn't unload the ferry because the currents made it very difficult to straighten out the boat... The 8:50 sailing ended up leaving about 20 minutes late. This may have contributed to the problem... That dolphin was too far out for the Hiyu to rest against while docked. Since the question as to where the Hiyu can or cannot be used, I took a picture of the USCG license... (sorry about the blurriness... the low lighting made it difficult to get a good picture). No mention of any restrictions due to below deck configuration.

In other words, she could be used on any WSF route?

If the Hiyu doesn't carry the Rhododendron restriction (and I'm not willing to say that it isn't without seeing the other page(s) of the COI) then it's probably because the boat hasn't been severely modified and, as such, is probably grandfathered. However, it's still completely inadequate for use at Port Townsend... I don't think it has any more freeboard than the Steilacoom II, and without the various "improvements" to the vessel that is essentially the enlarged Hiyu.

Not to mention that she most likely can't handle the currents on that route.

I was at Point Defiance last Thursday afternoon doing some Hiyu spotting, and one of the things we noticed first off was just how far back the dolphins were from the back of the boat. I guess they can't be perfect for all the possible boats on the route.
One other thing I noticed -- there was a lot of adjusting going on with the dock. Typically, when the ferry arrives or leaves, the crew raises or lowers the front lip of the dock to meet the deck of the ferry. But in this case, there was a lot of moving the longer section of the dock up or down. (And I'm sure the parts of the dock have names, but I don't really know them.)
Anyway, would that have been a Hiyu thing, or a dock issue, or the tide was funny, or I was just noticing more things than normal? I dunno. It just seemed odd.
BTW, pictures will be in the picture thread, just as soon as I shrink them.......

Quick hit and run here-- Do bear in mind that the Hiyu is 75 feet shorter than the next smallest boat in the fleet, and is in all reality unlikely to see a whole lot of service, so it's natural that WSF isn't too worried about dock configuration to accomodate the Hiyu. As for adjusting the dock (the long piece is the 'transfer span' and the short piece is the 'apron'), I'm not surprised about the large quantity of adjustments... the Hiyu, being smaller, is a lot more susceptible to weight removal and Archimedes' Principle.

I guess we can now "officially" welcome the STEILACOOM II to the WSF fleet. We now know that she will be with the green and white fleet for another year until the new ferry goes into service next year. Enjoy your stay with WSF, "ST2"! ;D

The equipment isn't terribly complicated; it's mostly a matter of finding the time and maintenance money to get it installed. I would think that salvaging the gear from a Steel-Electric would be no great challenge.
And still no word on the names of the new vessels.

Let's be kind to the mighty MV Hiyu. What would WSF do without her? If she runs a little slow, it's not a major crisis. Perhaps, we should not be in such a rush so much of the time!!

We are in a rush, but it's a result of our "instant" culture. It's more a problem of quantity than speed when it comes to the Hiyu.

I got my first opportunity to meet the Hiyu this week -- I have always seemed to be in the right spot a day or a week too early or late for the occasion. Now all I need is a chance to be there when my wife hasn't decided that "we have rode on too many ferries already this week." What is too many, anyway? Hiyu at Point Defiance: It looked like shift change, at a time of day when the Rhododendron would have been taking its scheduled mid-afternoon siesta: Mrs. K thought it was funny that there was two of everything up there: Off to Talequah:

I think it's getting by... the speed isn't so much a problem when an 10-knot boat gets an 11-knot schedule by comparison to the Sealth/Evergreen interface.

I have heard many diffferent opinons on the overall condition of the Hiyu. Some say it's quite deteriorated, others that it is in great shape. One thing is for sure, it is not likely to have much metal fatigue due to the many years of being tied up, your opinions please. Jim
