Anyone know what is wrong with the Salish? It has been out of service for 2 days. An engine turbocharger quit working. They're waiting for a part to arrive from the Midwest.

Looks like the Salish will be on her own for a while.
PT/Coup - One-Boat Service Resumes Tuesday, 10/14 The final day of two-boat service on the Port Townsend/Coupeville route for 2014 is Monday, Oct. 13. Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14, the route will have its seasonal reduction to one-boat service, with sailings every 90 minutes. Please see the late fall schedule.
PT/Coup - Kennewick Galley Will Be Closed 10/13 Due to vessel repositioning, the galley on the Kennewick will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13. We apologize for the inconvenience. Snack and beverage machines are available on board the vessel.

According to Marine Traffic, the Salish is the 3rd boat on the Edmond-Kingston run.

Drove up to Kingston this afternoon for some ferry spotting. Here are a couple of shots of MV Salish at Kingston. The 3-boat schedule appears to be doing a reasonably good job of clearing traffic, at least on the Kingston side. The typical Sunday queuing didn't appear to be that bad, at least not 2 hours ago.

Sunday, May 3, 2015 Today offered me another milestone in the routes I have taken a ride aboard a KDT ferry on. Add the Kingston run to my log. I've been aboard the SALISH on the Keystone run, the Bremerton run, the Tahlequah run, and in the San Juan Islands. Since she was acting as third ferry on the Kingston run this fine sunny day, I took advantage of this opportunity. Here's my photo journal of my trip aboard the SALISH on the Kingston run ( PHOTO HEAVY!): The SALISH at Edmonds. The SALISH on her 1310PDT sailing. Back to old times. A ferry waits to land on a three-vessel service. It was normal that way on the Columbia Beach run before 1982. The waiting ferry this time was the big WALLA WALLA. This is something you can't do when watching the SALISH's eastern sister ISLAND HOME doing her trips at Martha's Vineyard: Looking at mountains. The waiting game continues. This time, the SALISH waits for the SPOKANE. Arriving Edmonds. Oh, yes, a freight train passed through Edmonds between these sightings of the SALISH. Time for me to get my ticket! Getting ready to board the SALISH. I do believe the days of seeing green on the visors aboard WSF vessels are numbered. The sighting of seagull droppings is awful. I guess it's time to have them white again. Edmonds marina from the Sun Deck of the SALISH. Departing Edmonds at 1450PDT. WALLA WALLA noses her way into the slip at Edmonds while Mount Baker "watches". SPOKANE pulls out of the east slip. We are using the west slip. Arriving Kingston. Big or small these WSF vessels are, it's a good idea to have foot passenger boarding platforms aboard them all. You'll never know where they may be called upon to serve outside of their normal assignments. In this case, the Edmonds to Kingston run complete with foot passenger planks at the docks on both shores. The foot passenger plank on the Saloon Deck aboard the SALISH. Here comes the BIG W! The WALLA WALLA lands while we start out. Passengers aboard both ferries waved to each other. Underway from Kingston at 1535PDT. Doing a nice turn. A means to get to Port Townsend. A longer drive to get there from this ferry this day, though. SALISH and the Olympic Mountains on this part of the Salish Sea. Nearing Edmonds. Meeting a big cousin. I'll let you guess the name of that one. Watching mountains and marine traffic from a Sun Deck of a ferry on a sunny afternoon. Can't get any better than that! Arriving Edmonds. SALISH at Edmonds. Even though she was the smallest ferry on this run this day, the SALISH slightly out-lengths the Steel-Electrics which were the big ferries here during their days before the arrival of the EVERGREEN STATE in 1954. Seeing the SALISH at this location reminds me of the days when I watched the ILLAHEE do her trips from this dock, minus the foot passenger plank, then. The SALISH departs at 1620PDT while the BIG W waits. Come all-day Monday, it's back to the two big ferries serving the Edmonds to Kingston run by themselves. The SALISH went up to Port Townsend after her guest appearance on the Kingston run this day. The SALISH did well on the Kingston run Sunday. She carried full loads on my trips both ways and virtually kept this run's wait time alerts from reaching my email inbox. Thanks for another good ride, MV SALISH!

why was there three boat service on the Edmonds run?? The Keystone dock was closed for the weekend while workers replaced a part. WSF figured that there would be more traffic going through Kingston as northern Olympic Peninsula people would be using that run. So, they brought the SALISH out of hibernation and put her on the Kingston run assisting the SPOKANE and WALLA WALLA. Today, she's giving the KENNEWICK a little break at Keystone.

WSF doesn't hardly have enough boats available to meet the maintenance needs of the fleet, let alone start adding third boats to the service schedule.

Hehe, well obviously not now but if traffic @ Point Defiance ever got to the level where a bigger boat was warranted there than Chetzemoka, say Sealth, that's an option I suppose. What we have here is an apparent good "side use" for a 64 car boat where it can bring value to the system. The real shame here is that they would have been truly useful in a pinch/emergency pretty much everywhere in the system if they were actually capable of their design speed but that ship has sailed (no pun intended).
Honestly, baring a big change in how people use cars I'm expecting we'll see three boat service on both Edmonds/Kingston, and Mukilteo/Clinton some day, though not for a few decades yet.

Shortly aafter the beginning of the year, I took advantage of the fact that the Salish was relieving the Chetzy at PDT and managed to get a tour in that short 15 minute crossing.

MV Salish Submarine seen from the passing Kennewick: She is now done with guarding the sub from my evil camera and returns to being just the regular old Salish heading towards Keystone. A little while later, here she is making her last departure of the day from Port Townsend: A view of the sundeck: More photography from the stairs, this time looking aft at the Pickleforks: And to finish things off, a view of her docked at Keystone:

Looks like the Salish is finally back on schedule with the 4:00pm from Fauntleroy to Vashon, she left at 4:02pm. I rode her from Southworth at 11:15 this morning and we didn't leave until around 11:45am

Yesterday morning the Salish left Vashon nearly 30 minutes behind schedule on the 5:45 AM sailing (I believe due to crew familiarization). In what I guess was an attempt to get back on schedule, the Salish arrived at Fauntleroy sometime after 5:10 PM (for an obviously late 5:10 sailing to Vashon and Southworth) with no cars or passengers on board. At Vashon, all vehicles going to Southworth for the 5:35 PM sailing were backed on onto the vessel instead of turning around at the end of the vessel.

Ironically, these "tub toys" work the most challenging route in WSF. They have done a lot better than I thought they would, and now look good too since they've been ballasted. Granted that they are not good for turning cars around on the boat.

I took advantage of the Salish at Vashon yesterday and got a departure video for your viewing enjoyment. Great video of the departure, Thanks for posting. I noticed that the crews that worked the Salish perferd single lane loading/unloading. It seemed they would finish by unloading double lane once enough space was created on the car deck. I agree with those that say this is a tough boat for multi-destination routes. I am curious if that is why this boat ran in the #3 position which has a lot of direct trips Vashon/Fauntleroy and Southworth/Fauntleroy.

Looks like the ol' Salish is coming back to the San Juans (to serve poorly) again starting March 8. I like the Tillikum/Klahowya better.

Ana/SJs/Interisland - Salish Replaces Tillikum 3/8 Due to scheduled vessel maintenance, the 64-vehicle Salish will replace the 87-vehicle Tillikum on the interisland route beginning Tuesday, March 8. The Salish is expected to remain on the interisland route through the end of March. Drivers are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly during this temporary downsizing.
