ElwhaFriday2 by Lincoln McMahon, on Flickr Took this photo in February when I was out in the San Juans, immediately after my first ride on the Elwha. The sky was certainly interesting that day. Was hoping for a rainbow somewhere as the conditions would lean towards one being somewhere, but didn't catch any.

A video from earlier today of the Elwha approaching Edmonds on a windy January 10 at high tide. I fully appreciate the skill required to dock the ferry on a day like this!
And, apologies for the video quality, just had my cell phone with me today....

A couple of photos from Edmonds today: And, yes, it was incredibly cold and windy today. I'll be washing the salt spray off of the car tomorrow.

Bah. She was there years before the Jumbos even thought about it.

Bah. She was there years before the Jumbos even thought about it. 1974 (actually after the 1973 summer season) was the year when the ELWHA began serving the Kingston - Edmonds crossing. She went back to Winslow in 1979 so a Jumbo could do trips between Edmonds and Port Townsend after you-know-what happened. All years before the foot passenger plank was installed, as well as her elevator.

All years before the foot passenger plank was installed, as well as her elevator. She actually was there in April of 1973, but only for a week (and a couple of days late in the month). After that, not until April of 1974. But then she was primarily an Edmonds-Kingston boat until the early 1980s (with relief stints at Bremerton and *ahem!* Winslow), when she gradually faded over to the San Juans.

I think that's the first time I've noticed the new windshield wipers (though they've probably been there for nine months)... as for the interior, I love the lighting on this shot. Even if it did make me think, rather sadly, "wow... she finally looks old."

Took a usual trip on the Elwha, on a very unusual route. Here's some photos: I think that's the first time I've noticed the new windshield wipers (though they've probably been there for nine months)... as for the interior, I love the lighting on this shot. Even if it did make me think, rather sadly, "wow... she finally looks old." Thank you! Actually, the Elwha felt a lot smoother than the Spokane. This was quite a change from the last two times I've ridden her. One time there was an electrical shortage, and the other time she broke down, but this time she was acting like a "good boat".

The Spokane and a few others have been riding much, much rougher since the five-blade props went on. The Spokane is particularly bad. I was shocked at how rough the ride had gotten. If the Elwha is riding smoother, that's really saying something!

Just an observation from the round trip I took during her stay in Edmonds: The jigsaw puzzles on about 8 of the tables in various stages of being done. Just a small reminder of her being generally a San Juan Islands boat...

Couple of pics I forgot about from last weekend up on Orcas. I forgot about them because they were taken with my iPhone, not my regular camera. Anyway, here's a glimpse of a creative seating arrangement on Elwha. Don't know the story behind why the chairs were arranged this way, but it's definitely unique.

I believe there is an offshoot "Society of Friends" group of the Quakers that instead of quaking when they pray, the like to move chairs when they pray. It appears that a congregation of "ChairMovers" has moved into the Puget Sound area.
