I hope you enjoy the pictures I took. I see that you didn't claim to go to Saturna Island this time, Jason. That's a good thing. Please see this post HERE which we'd like you to respond to, please. Thanks.

Thanks. I have been to Saturna Island in the past, many times actually on my visits to the Gulf Islands with my family.

This is a video I recorded from Shaw to Orcas onboard the Klahowya on September 12, 2015. This was recorded from the area between the Klahowya's pickleforks sped up 32x.

Might I suggest a tripod next time I'm sorry about that. I forgot to bring my tripod so I just used the camera with out it My unsolicited advice on the short video: 32x speed (or any fast speed) will negatively magnify any unwanted camera movement from your shooting. So without a stable shoot to begin with, a fast speed will make the result too jerky. I use an editing program to cut-out any brief jerky parts from my original speed video, so that a few bad spots doing ruin the result. I use something called Video Pad to cut things up and move things around in my clips. - otherwise, it's tough to get things done right in 1 take, without any editing. I like to show a good mix of land & sea in the view that my camera is pointed at. So being aware of what items are (and aren't) in your camera's frame is important. When I started doing sped-up video, I just ran the whole segment at the same speed. But now I like to show different parts slower and some parts faster, because the situations are different. ie. the focus on prop-wash at the start of your video and the subsequent move of your view to the horizon seems too fast at 32x, and too much of a jerky abrupt transition for the viewer. So my advice, if you're interested in doing this type of work, is to: - always use a stable platform for filming (tripod is great) - don't be afraid to cut parts out. - experiment with different speeds - think of the sped-up result when you're doing the filming, so that you keep your camera movements appropriate for the anticipated results (ie. if you're planning on a fast video, then keep your camera view consistent, and don't move from view to view) - and have fun experimenting, and enjoy the progress. - and don't get arrested by the ferry-police.

I've been having trouble deciding which photos to use for my photo of the year submissions. Decided not to use this one though, but I think it is worthy of posting (The Klahowya pulling into Friday Harbor last October. The departing Samish is behind it.) klahowyabanner_1 by Lincoln McMahon, on Flickr

So I see that the Klahowya is currently docked at the tie-up slip at Vashon. It is supposed to be at Eagle Harbor. No mention of service changes that I have seen. Anyone with insider info?

Tuesday, March 01, 2016 01:48 PM
Faunt/Va/SW - Klahowya replaces Cathlamet Due to a required annual vessel inspection, the 87-vehicle Klahowya will replace the 124-vehicle Cathlamet beginning Wednesday, March 2. This down-sizing will allow the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route to maintain a three-boat schedule.

The Salish has replaced the Klahowya. Does this mean the Klahowya is retired now?

The Salish has replaced the Klahowya. Does this mean the Klahowya is retired now? According to EvergreenFleet.com, Klahowya is being sent to Eagle Harbor to be the backup/reserve vessel until she is decommissioned, likely sometime this summer, after Chimacum enters service. Tillikum will be the eventual replacement as the inter-island ferry. www.evergreenfleet.com/2017-January.htmlHere are my final photos of Klahowya as the inter-island ferry, taken around Christmas, 2016:

Anyone know why the Klahowya isn't being used at F-V-S? I know it's technically decommissioned, but with the Kitsap out, I would've thought Klahowya would get put there, rather than keeping the two-boat service at the triangle today. I wasn't sure if the Klahowya was just getting regular maintenance in Eagle Harbor right now or what...just curious!

I think the Klahowya is just in standby right now. If Klahowya were in standby, she would be at FVS right now... I think this situation is the ultimate proof that the Klahowya is, in fact, now retired. WSF wouldn't keep a usable vessel idle in EH while FVS, or any route for that matter, is down a boat. ===== Murphy's Law- Anytime WSF tries to get rid of a ferry, two more break down.

She's been decrewed (i.e., no crew assigned), so that could be a factor why she's not in service.

I finally moved the Klahowya thread into the Historic Washington Ferries board. That I did this today is not indicative of anything more than I finally realized we still had this vessel in the current ferries thread, and, well, I really don't think Klahowya is coming back. I don't know if she has been officially decommissioned - if they did, it was done rather quietly - but Klahowya is no longer listed in the current fleet page on the WSF website, so that's good enough for me.
