Well, it looks like the days of seeing past ferry activity remnants at the old Quincy Street ferry dock at Port Townsend are drawing to a close. The wing walls still stand after all these years of non-use. The last ferry to touch these was the VANCOUVER ISLAND PRINCESS in the spring of 1988 to evaluate the feasibility of auto ferry service between Port Townsend and Victoria. Nothing materialized and the ship is in China now. The retired VASHON used this in 1985 as she was a hostel for two months that year before going to Alaska. The renovated KLICKITAT was the last WSF to use this dock in 1983. WSF moved to Harrison Street in 1984. Almost! Technically this doesn't count, as it was used for a movie, but the Steilacoom docked there in 1999 for the filming of Snow Falling on Cedars as a stand in for the Eagledale Dock on Bainbridge Island and for the Kehloken. I remember reading something about how bad a time they had filming that scene because to dock was in such bad shape.

I went over there a while ago. The old landing seems to deteriorate more and more each time I see it. I really like seeing it there though. A wonderful living reminder of times past.

Thanks for that bit of info, "EGfleet"! Here's a freeze frame of the movie's trailer showing this scene at the Quincy Street dock in Port Townsend. www.imdb.com/title/tt0120834/www.snowfallingoncedars.com/I guess we'll count the STEILACOOM as the last ferry to land at this dock. A variety of sized ferries have landed at this dock: DEFIANCE SAN DIEGO OLYMPIC RHODODENDRON Super (1979-1980 Edmonds - Port Townsend) Jumbo (1979-1980 Edmonds - Port Townsend) TILLIKUM (1980 Edmonds - Port Townsend phaseout) Steel-Electrics VASHON (Post retirement hostel 1985) VANCOUVER ISLAND PRINCESS (1988 dock fitting) STEILACOOM (1999 "Snow Falling on Cedars" filming)

Where can you park at Keystone??? I have some free time and I am on a WSF high right so I might be doing more trips this month down to Anacortes again and Couperville as I would like to get on the Salish or whatever boat is on that run.

You can't REALLY park at Keystone/Coupeville. The only parking is at the sorta-Cafe near the terminal. You might get away with it, but no official parking.
Also, maybe nearby Fort Casey State Park might have some parking, no guarantee of overnight parking, though. Figuratively, Keystone is pretty dead on parking.

Why doesn't WSF do two boat serve from December 1. 2012 to January 15. 2013 excluding Dec.25 and Jan.1 for Traffic on the route during the holidays?

Why doesn't WSF do two boat serve from December 1. 2012 to January 15. 2013 excluding Dec.25 and Jan.1 for Traffic on the route during the holidays? You have an idea that fits your screen name. If this happens, I guess the second vessel could operate Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and partly on Mondays during the Christmas holiday time period. The maintenance schedule shows the SALISH as being on standby during that time. She could be available.

Why doesn't Washington state ferries operate two boat service on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays from the 10:15 am sailing from Port Townsend to 6:00 pm sailing from Port Townsend? Because those day look bad for vehicle traffic?

Here are some photos of the Port Townsend terminal taken on Sunday, December 30, 2012: MV KENNEWICK arriving the single-lane slip. The main slip is being completely redone. Getting ready to board. The camera was put down for boarding (no pics of loading). At the dock. Departing. Notice how primitive the single-lane slip is. This is primarily used as the tie-up slip for the seasonal second ferry. Moving over to the old Quincy Street dock one day earlier. Lane Number Two still shows after the current work being done on the new waterfront park. This dock needs some tender loving care. Perhaps the OLYMPIC or RHODODENDRON as a tenant? Dating back many years ago. This sign is located adjacent to Union Wharf.

Welcome back, two-vessel service! The SALISH arrives Port Townsend on her 1700PDT sailing from Keystone while the KENNEWICK is underway on her 1715PDT sailing from Port Townsend to Keystone. The SALISH had an eventful off-season and a bit of foot passenger activity on her pickle forks on a major route out of Seattle. The gates were well tested and used. This two-vessel restoration occurs on Mother's Day, 2013. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, mothers!

The Port Townsend Leader reports that the old Quincy Street Dock has lost its dilapidated transfer span. It served its purpose well through the years of use by ferries small and huge as well as the retired MV VASHON's hostel operations from June to July 1985, the Canadian MV VANCOUVER ISLAND PRINCESS's dock fitting attempt in 1988, and the MV STEILACOOM I's filming sessions. Here are some photos of the former Keystone ferry dock. This dock was located east of the current terminal. From a video a friend gave me. This shows the dock as it was in the 1930s with the BEELINE in the slip. It was a rather primitive dock then. The Black Ball Line closed this Admiralty Bay to Port Townsend service during that decade. I was pretending that I was getting off the ferry at the former site. Photo is "classic"-ized in black and white. Same photo in living color. This was taken a couple of years ago as well as the below photos. The remnants of the former dock. This building was put on top of the landing. Former meets current. The current terminal was built in a man made harbor for use by Olympic Ferries Inc in the late 1940s. A closer look with the KENNEWICK in the dock. From Google Earth, we see the location of the former dock at Keystone. A closer look at the former dock. Screen shots of the vintage ferry action at Keystone were from this video. A lot of effort was taken by Mr. Bill Hunziker to give us a look at Whidbey Island as it was back in the 1930s. Besides the motion picture action at Keystone, we see action at Columbia Beach with the ferry PUGET as well. I'll let you watch this video for that action besides what this island had to offer then. You can check with the South Whidbey Historical Society if they have more copies of this. History is fun to study!

It's all over for the shore based remnants of years past activity at the Quincy Street dock in Port Townsend. The revitalization is virtually complete. The transfer span is gone. New walkways are in place. The lane numbers are now covered over. The "approach" is still "there".

The remaining old berth structure at Port Townsend. - July 16, 2014 The public pier behind the old berth gives the illusion that the berth-bridge is still there; but it's not.

The narrow confines of Keystone Harbor, seen by me on July 16, 2014 Evening pano: ----------------- Small simple passenger building, with turnstiles activated when you swipe your wave-to-go ticket. Simple & efficient system. The campers at Ft. Casey campground must hate the constant sounds of ferry horns. Not just departure horns (long & loud) but the nearby foggy-weather horns and the "small boat, get out of my way" horns. Constant noise, sounds like a South African soccer match.

I spent a night at that campground in May of 2013 & I don't recall noise being an issue during the night, with only a layer of nylon between me & the outside world. Then again, the ferries don't run after about 11 PM and then not again until about 6 AM. I slept well there; a nice camp site!

We spent a few nights at Camp Casey last year, and on foggy mornings you can hear a distant ferry whistle. I can say that they do it a lot on sunny days in the summer, as we heard them all day long, but by the evenings, they don't do it as much.
