Don't know about anybody else, but I'm going to miss the great, hulking, metal and wood dock structures that used to serve even the smallest boats, and which seemed to make the ferry landing a rather significant place. Don't know which side of Saanich Inlet this is, probably mid '70s.  |

This photo of the MV MILL BAY was taken at Brentwood Bay. She is shown with her telegraph set at astern with the cars parked with their noses pointed toward the stern.
She loads at the bow at Brentwood Bay and unloads through her stern at Mill Bay.

The land in the background also gives it away. There is no land that close to the Mill Bay terminal. Also, the boat on the left hand side appears to be at a marina, which is also only at the Brentwood side.

I agree, those old dock structures were what made the Ferry Terminal an Intresting place. |

Mill Bay landing, on 10/26/2010:   - and the Mill Bay berth, after we've left  -------- ....and the Brentwood Bay side.  - The Brentwood landing is such a popular sight, that residents have built luxury loge-suites on the hillside to watch the ferry-action.  ....and here's something beautiful that is moored beside the ferry terminal:  |

I can't figure how the mill bay ferry is a gulf inlands ferry when both terminals are solidly on Vancouver Island. Memories for me go back to my Uvic days when I worked the Swartz Bay spare board and did a christmas day shift releiving the regular seaman all those years ago, late 60's as I recall. Mrdot.  |

What, you mean that no one told you about the canal? --------- (but seriously, we weren't going to have a separate thread just for this 1 small route. It had to be bundled somewhere, and this was the closest. There's a support-group available that Paul K. leads for people to cope with illogical thread titles). |

I remember the old BC Ferries schedules that route was listed as the Saanich Inlet Route! It was in the Mainland/Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast schedules before BC Ferries introduced the All Routes Schedules.

Another indication that the MV Mill Bay will be retired soon:
- the renovation work for the 2 berths has gone to tender. Tender closes in mid January.
The renovations will allow the larger ferry Klitsa to fit.

Is there going to be a time-period when there is to be no service on the route, due to maintenance? I'm thinking that once the aprons have been replaced, it will be impossible to lower the new aprons onto the Mill Bay. Also, during construction they're obviously going to have to shut down operations. How long do we think this shut-down period will last for?
Also, it's probably already been mentioned, but I haven't found it: Which ship will replace the Klitsa on her route between Hornby and Denman, and if her replacement is currently serving a different route, which ship will replace it, and so on...?

Klitsa hasn't seen a regular route since the Kuper came online. Kahloke is currently on the Denman-Hornby run.

Here are some photos, taken by forum member Hullnumbers, that he requested I post for him: The Brentwood Bay terminal. Only the right-side lane was open to traffic on the trestle.   A temporary retaining wall at the terminal. Land cleared for the future third lane of the trestle:   A construction notice. Too bad the photo is all moistened over. Some pictures of Brentwood Bay taken by Hullnumbers today.  Notice that the deck has been removed and a gate is in place.  New pilings are made of metal, while old are wooden.   With the Klitsa in berth. These pictures are Hullnumbers' property, not mine. |
