Well, I've decided to turn a dream into a reality.
Recently, I discovered - while doing a GIS of the Kaleetan - someone had built a remote-control scale replica of the Kaleetan in HO-scale.
I've decided to attempt my own remote-control scale replica of the Kaleetan (and later, her three sisters), only this time my scale model will be in S-gauge (1:64th scale).
I have a pretty vast photo library of the Kaleetan enough to get me started on structural and aesthetic details of the vessel, but realizing that we live in a post-9/11 world, is it possible that WSF or the WSDOT would be willing to hand over a set of basic plans? If not, is there anyone here that has a decent set of hull photos of a Super-Class vessel?
As planned, I plan a fully-functional model with interior/exterior detail including passenger cabin seating (my model will be as the Kaleetan looks now - with plans for a second model sometime along the way as she looked when new).
The length of my model will be just over 5 feet 11 inches long and just under 1 foot 2 inches wide.
Once construction commences, I'll post updates here, if permitted.

Here's another model project that I'm aware of, that you may be interested in: www.queenofchilliwack.ca/- click the "construction" tab. For your Kaleetan model, remember to cut-out all the spaces for the "rosenowindows" so that she looks like a real ferry, haha. (I'll honor you by referring to one of your favorite ferry features with your name). Back to topic, there may be other models noted on this forum elsewhere, but the above item is the only one that came to mind immediately, and it's RC. We have some computer generated drawings of ferries (we have a thread for that), but you're doing a model so that's different. I look forward to seeing your progress here in this thread. I hope that you get all the info / plans that you require. - member "Quatchi" received some detailed drawings from BC Ferries that helped him in his model planning & construction.

The owner of the Kaleetan has posted here once or twice before. She participates on the RC Groups forum with the username Umi Ryuzuki. If you do a search over there, you'll find quite a few mentions of her Kaleetan model because the build process was very much a learning experience. I'd highly recommend that you read a bit on that forum BEFORE you start construction. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=498587

I was going through that thread last night but unfortunately I never found much on the model save for the few photos in that thread, and one more thread I found through GIS. I've already planned out a good part of how I plan on building the hull and superstructure. I've had plenty of experience with building model boats as I've built museum-quality scale models of Titanic before.

I don't think you'd have a lot of luck getting detailed blueprints of the ferries in the post-9/11 world. Umi stated right in her thread that she got her copies before the World Trade Center attack. Mind you, I've never actually tried to get them as a member of the public. I have access to them, but it's more than my job's worth to perform an unauthorized 'share.'

I'm aware of that. I didn't need the obvious stated, as I made mention of that myself in the opening post.

Well, there's no point in rehashing something I alluded to in the opening post (and yes, I saw Umi's thread, as I made mention of looking at that - and yes I read it also), and IMO his post came off as being kinda snide.

As an addendum, I wonder about that, because just the other day I stumbled upon the entire set of detailed drawings - available publicly through the WSF website in PDF form - for the Kwa-di-Tabil class boats.
Sooo... Gives some points to think on.

I'd like to point out that you said nothing about where you found out about Umu Ryuzuki's model. For all I knew you saw it at a show somewhere. I pointed out that thread because I legitimately thought you would like to see it, and I didn't know if you knew about RC Groups or not. If you are looking for help or advice on something, it helps if you don't bite the head off the people who put some effort in to help you. For the record, I have found BCF's engineering department extremely accommodating to requests for models, as long as you explain what you are doing. I would hope WSF is equally as encouraging.

Well, out of fairness, Umi's model is the only one that shows up on a GIS of the Kaleetan, in any form of scale replica, and the photos of it that pop up on said GIS lead right to the RC Groups forums. And to my knowledge only two threads exist that I know of there, that contain any info. or pix on it.
Truth be told, I think I recall discovering Umi's model a while back, when I first started this voyage of being a ferry fan and really started riding - and photographically documenting - the Kaleetan. However, it was a recent discovery of the thread you linked (the first one I saw only had a couple pix, not the car deck shots) that really sparked my interest in this.
I also apologize for seeming like I'm biting the hand that feeds me, and if I come across like that, please let me know. And while I clear things up, it wasn't your post my reply was directed towards.

I have collected ship plans for both historical and modern vessels, sorry no WSF. I have also found BCF and AMHS to be very accommodating to these types of requests as well. A suggestion to "stevenrosenow" would be to try and contact WSF with your request and explain that it is for building a model. You may find that you are not the first person make such a request from them, even post 9/11.

In the spirit of clearing things up, I'm wondering what you mean by "a GIS for the Kaleetan". Is this a website? Because I don't really understand what you mean. Or are you talking about something similar to Google-Earth?

The only GIS I know of is "Geographic Information System" which doesn't exactly relate to the Kaleetan.

Steve have you gone through all the RFP's and RFI's posted for the super class on the DOT's website? There are a lot of diagrams and other information for them there. Now obviously the resolution on most is going to be to low to be useful for what you want but you might be able to piece together substantial portions of what you are looking for. It might also serve as a starting point to make sure if you did approach WSF and ask you could ask for the *right* stuff right off and limit the level of alarm.
For example for the Hyak you have a bunch of low res stuff posted with the RFI for her hybrid propulsion system.

I'm actually going through several of those right now. I've actually saved a great deal of the plans available they have of the KDT-class boats since I plan on doing a model of those at some point in the future. I've basically been at that end of the WSDOT website all day long.

I might also suggest using Google and searching the wa.gov domain as a whole by restricting it using <term> site:wa.gov if you have not already done so. That will find many things like "hidden" FTP sites, legislature meeting notes etc... Plus thier cache will find things that the DOT might have pulled subsequently as the Alaskan Way viaduct people found the other day. ;-)

I seem to be having a slight issue on my end or I'm not doing it right. **EDIT** Nevermind! I was blind!

GIS = Google Images Search. Please try to be more descriptive in the future. It will help people understand your posts. - A good rule follow is that if you see jargon, acronyms etc used regularly on this forum, then that's a good indication that people will understand the item. If you don't see your jargon being used on this forum, then please be descriptive so that we will know what you mean. If in doubt, be descriptive. Look at this forum as a conversation place, and don't get annoyed if people ask the same thing twice (because people are taking an interest in what you've posted about) or if people can't read your mind (because we actually can't read your mind, except for Luke who has special powers...). Thanks.

An update: I have contacted "Umi Ryuzuki", the modeler of the 1:87 scale Kaleetan and she's been generous to assist me in my model. She has supplied me with the necessary plans I need to get the thing started. I've even signed up under my own account there, under the name "mv_kaleetan" and I've received tons of assistance with respect to hull construction and interior lighting. Construction has indeed started on it already, and I've been arduously drawing up and constructing template jigs that will assist me in creating the passenger decks and bulkheads. I've also decided that not only will this be a fully-functional, double-ended propulsion RC model, it will also be internally and externally lit and completely furnished on the inside. The hull hopefully will be finished in about a month. Hoping overall to have a one-year build duration. Much like the real-world counterpart! Also, incase anyone here is interested, here's the full measurements on it, with actual vessel measurements in parenthesis. Length O/A 5 ft 11 11/16 inches (actual length 382 ft 3 inches) Beam 1 ft 1 3/4 inches (actual beam 73 ft 2 inches) Depth of Hull from Car Deck to Keel 4 9/16 inches (actual depth 24 ft 3 inches) Draft 3 1/2 inches (actual draft 18 ft 6 inches) Car deck tunnel main clearance 2 15/16 inches (actual clearance 15 ft 6 inches) Side gallery deck clearance - upper and lower 1 7/16 inches (actual clearance 7 ft 6 inches) Height of model overall from keel to funnel tops- approximately 1 ft 3 inches (actual measurement unknown)
