Thanks for the correction, I guess I need to work on my Seaspan vessels Ha ha, to tell you the truth, I had to verify with the 'Working Vessels' thread to be sure... At first I suggested 'Seaspan Challenger', then I quickly edited the post... Okay, I'm not cheating here, so someone please mark this quiz: Seaspan Doris: The one pictured above in this thread. Formerly Doris YorkeSeaspan Greg: Doris's sistership, with a much shorter superstructure. Formerly Greg YorkeSeaspan Challenger: The super-tall tugboat that pushes a barge around. Carrier Princess: The one that Jason posted. If I missed any of the Seaspan ferries, just post it's name, NOT WHICH ONE IT IS, and I'll try to remember which one it is. Princess Superior is similar to Carrier Princess, but with a shorter superstructure. See this page: www.coastalintermodal.com/fleet.htm

Tonight there was a huge pod of whales just off of Tsawwassen. I'm assuming that they're after the huge amount of Sockeye salmon that is in the area at the moment. It was quite spectacular to see whales breaching and spyhopping almost everywhere you looked for at least half of the trip across the Strait tonight. Couple bonus shots for you guys too.

From morning of August 26, 2010 on Route-30's Coastal Inspiration. 6:00am: - I like the dawn, before the sun gives too much light. I really like the shape of the ocean in this picture. 6:30am: - Just before sunrise, or just before I could see the circle-shape of the sun.....in case some of you get hung-up on such a technicality ;D. 6:31am: - Sunrise.

Shot this boater's attempt to earn a Darwin award from the Queen of Capilano today: He slowed to a dead crawl while almost directly ahead of the ferry. Point of closest approach before he left the area was perhaps 300ft at most.

On the way to Protection Island, the Protection-Connection ferry went past this humble ship. - here's an interesting web page on that ship www.benford.us/pdf/55TeddiBear.pdf

Circa summer 1984. photo by Mr. DOT ©How come in older summer photos, it seems that way more people are on the outside decks then these days in summer photos? Are the outer decks lessening in popularity, or is there just way more room on-board to move around on the newer ships? Afterthought: Actually, the latter point couldn't be it, because on the New West recently this summer, there were not nearly that many people outside, and she has just as much pax-space as the 'Vancouver did in that pic.

As far as outside decks the ones on the Spirit's suck! My last trip was on a rainy miserable day and I hate how the Spirit's decks are open. I love the Coastals and the New West cause they have that lower sheltered deck where you can still go outside when it's raining. Not so much on the Spirit's and the C Class too!

On the Spirits, a good place to get out of the rain and wind is standing right under the bridge. The motion of the ship and shape of the superstructure keep you out of the rain.

Yes right beside where the Meeting Room windows angle out. The aerodynamics of the front make for a fairly breeze free few square feet. I have spent many hours in all sorts of weather nestled in that little corner with my cup of Seattle's Best or Hot Chocolate. People do look at me a little more strangely than usual with my beet red face when I do go back inside for refills or to eat.

If you look quick at the skyline it sure doesn't look like Vancouver . Then I begin to pick out buildings that I actually remember. The old Sheraton/Omni or whatever it is called this week always stands out on the far west of downtown. You have too look carefully to spot the rest there are so many towers now. Our own Shangrila Hotel/Condo is above ground and on its way, the rushed to put on the sign it would be Canada's tallest condo building before it was eclipsed by a number of others. There is some detail in that distinction to offset it from the Trump Tower that also calls itself Canada's tallest something due to the spire thingy on top and is further above ground (but to my eye looking a little underwhelming.) There are so many, that are so big, I am boggled at where the money is coming from for all the towers going up in Canada. We have two other 70 some story condos going up that are also under construction. I know Montreal after a slower start is also building condos like crazy. A good percentage of the Trump, Shangrila, and Ritz Carleton towers here and elsewhere are people who have suites in one of those buildings in other cities both for investment and for use, so there is a good international component.

We've got a Ritz-Carlton being built here in Vancouver, and according to a friend, who's a huge architecture geek (kinda to the level that we are ferry geeks) They've redone some of the plans to make it second tallest, if not tallest in Vancouver when it gets built.

The one upmanship is alive and well in building status . If the Ritz in Vancouver is going ahead that is a great sign that things are indeed stabilizing. It had ground to a hault when the credit crisis was full blown. Just so we are not as fully off topic, and a reverse from the thread title, I would imagine with a telescope you would get a great view of both the TSW and HSB ships crossing the Strait, from the penthouse condos of either building.
