Here are two different speed versions of the same set of videos that I shot on March 30, 2013. They are intended to show the scenery from a typical Route-2 ferry trip.
I was on the Queen of Oak Bay for both sailings (8:30am from Departure Bay and then 3:00pm from Horseshoe Bay). I tried to get long segments of the essential viewing on this well travelled route.
I apologize for the sometimes poor quality of jerky-camera, caused by harsh winds, a broken tripod head-clamp and sometimes by the sped-up effect. But I think that the good outways the poor quality. I am really happy with how these turned out.
The faster one (50x) shows the trip segments really quickly, for those who just want to get on with it. The slower one (20x) allows you to see more of the movements with less jerky effect.
I think that the best part is on the morning trip where I'm set up next to the rescue boat and watch the landscape behind Gibsons pass by, with those tall mountains in the background.
I didn't capture the entire trip, but enough segments to feel like it's almost full. And I shot from a variety of locations: all 3 car decks out windows, looking out from the stern of the upper car deck, and from the windy sundeck.
Here they are:

I had a question about how Mr. Horn shoots his videos: Do you shoot in 480p (VGA), 720p (HD) or 1080p (Full HD)? And also, when you zoom in during the video, is it digital or optical zoom?

I hate to say this, but "I don't know". really. I have a Canon point & shoot camera with a video mode. I'm not sure about what type of video it is. Regarding zoom, I use up my optical zoom first, and then go to digital zoom if I need more. But I almost always use just a bit of optical zoom. - zooming in too much leads to jerky video, for me. Sorry for my lack of technical knowledge.

Getting a point and shoot with in-movie optical zoom is pretty rare, so let me ask you which model you have then. Canon PowerShot SX 10 IS That's almost the same model as my camera, except mine is an SX40 HS, with 14.1 MP, instead of 10 MP. And it has 35x zoom. And it's an awesome camera, which I'm sure could be said for yours as well. It has 1080p video, but since it takes forever to download a 1080p video from the memory card to my computer, I'm probably never going to shoot videos in 1080p, instead I'll use 720p. And plus our HDTV is 720p, so shooting in 1080p on my camera is a pointless waste of space. As for your videos, it looks like they're shot at 1080p.

They do look like they're 1080p but they're in fact 480p... But after looking at point and shoots, I have figured out that buying one with both 1080p and optical zoom will not really be useful and that I'd rather use my current T2i when I get my new D5200, and for now keep shooting with my brother's camera, which has 480p. You have ultimate control over the zoom and manual focus with a DSLR, which I find essential when shooting video.

If you're thinking about doing speed-up videos like Mr. Horn, you should though shoot at the lowest fps (frame/second) possible as you won't need 60fps to do a sped up video.

From my March 30, 2013 video footage of route-2, I compiled a video showcasing what I think is the nicest part of the scenery: the view towards Gibsons and Keats & Bowen Islands.
- So here is that footage, sped-up 2-times only.
enjoy this glimpse of our beautiful coast:

Video complilation of 4 crossings made on April 13, 2013. - on board Quinitsa, heading from Buckley Bay to Denman West. Shot from the bow. - on board Kahloke, heading from Gravelly Bay to Shingle Spit. Shot from the bow - on boad Kahloke, heading from Shingle Spit to Gravelly Bay. Shot from the bow. - short piece on board Quinitsa, coming into Buckley Bay. Shot from aft car deck, showing spin effect under the bridge. I'm not sure what all the arm-waving in the bridge is about, but we came to an almost-complete stop short of the berth, and then slowly travelled the last 50 meters or so.
If you want to see what the scenery looks like on these routes (just the straight ahead scenery), then you'll enjoy this.

Seen from a ferry... That is Mount Baker in the distance. Quiz TimeWhat is in the land in the foreground, & what ferry is this taken from? Bonus points if you can name the prominent white building just to the left, below Mt. Baker. Wett Coast, on Flickr

Coho (the Juan de Fuca Strait is the only one to be that agitated on a day like this) and I'll guess Vancouver Island/Victoria as Whidbey doesn't have that much houses and isn't that close.

Here is a video of 2 round trips on Route-30, condensed to 3:14.
- I shot 162 minutes (that's almost 2.7 hours), so I shot almost 75% of the total trips.
From May 20, 2013. Enjoy !

Here's most of a typical route-1 trip from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen.
From the Spirit of British Columbia, May 20, 2013. - shot from the stern upon departure, and then switching to bow views for the rest of the trip (there is a gap missing in the first part of the trip, near the south end of Salt Spring Island, when I went inside to get some food and to shoot a silly congratulatory video) - video is sped-up 10x. - the first few seconds is of the departing SoVI ferry, seen from the Barnacle Rd. float.
Tomorrow, I'll post a 50X sped-up video of my complete Route-1 return trip. That one includes an Active Pass transit shot from the stern and the landing at Swartz Bay's berth #1.

Route-1 return trip, sped-up 50x.
Shot by me on May 20, 2013: - the 9:00am trip from Tsawwassen to Swartz on the SoVI - the 1:00pm trip from Swartz to Tsawwassen on the SoBC
I think that this one is a lot of fun to watch.

Here is the final piece of my multitude of May 20th videos. - this is the sunrise from the Coastal Renaissance. A renewal of the morning sky, seen from the waters near Entrance Island.
Video is sped-up, 10x.

Tsawwassen to Duke Point - "Sunset Cruise" - from Queen of Alberni's 8:15pm sailing on June 2, 2013.
I captured 95% of this trip on video.
Here it is, sped-up 10x.

Here's a return trip on Route 30 (June 2, 2013 on Queen of Alberni), sped-up. - this video captures 93% of the total round trip.
YouTube has 3 different speed versions, all in the same file - 100x - 50x - 20x
So you can enjoy the one that you like best (ie. some are in a rush, some like it a bit slower to see the scenery passing by).

That is pretty cool but I must say I don't know how you can do that for a whole round trip stay in one spot and just film. I would be bored, lol! I don't think I could do that. What if you have to go to the bathroom? lol!

What if you have to go to the bathroom? lol! RE the boredom: It's never boring being on a ship, looking at our coast. I walk around a bit in the general area of my camera/tripod, while it's filming the action. - and I'm motivated to get the results that I had planned for. Re the other issue: - it's all in the planning and discipline.

You are right it is not usually boring being on a ship. But I would get bored if I just stood there for 4 hours round trip filming. There are times where I just like to sit and there are times where I like to wonder. I find a round trip on route 30 is long but I still enjoy it when I don't do it that often. I pay that much to get on the boat I want to get the most out of it when I am just going for fun which is why I wouldn't be in one spot the whole trip, lol! But that is just me.
