We'll use this topic for the refits of the Ferries at Deas for the upcoming refit seasons. Lets see if we can keep it updated to know which ships are there and when they arrived/departed.
Currently Deas is full for the time being. We have:
Major Berths
Berth 1 - Spirit of British Columbia Berth 2 - Queen of Saanich Berth 3 - Queen of Capilano/Kahloke? Berth 4 - Northern Adventure
Minor and Intermediate Berths
Berth 5 - Klitsa with Kahloke tied up beside her Berth 6 - Queen of Tsawwassen Berth 7 - Empty
In case anyone needs a reference as to which berth is which, refer to the current Flagship photo up above. The Queen of Alberni is sitting in Berth 1, while the Bowen/Mayne Queen is in Berth 4. Scroll down to see the photo of the layout.

Thanks Chris. That is a great resource. All the times I have driven by Deas I have only strayed from the highway a couple times to get a closer view. I have usually just slowed as much as was safe and craned my neck to catch a sight of what ferry was there before the tunnel. So I would have had no clue what berth was what. Sometimes all the information at the fingertips of those who are much more knowledgeable can be intimidating and some may not really want to ask some questions so they don't look stupid (ie. Me ). You laid it out clearly so that is very helpful.

a little update, yes the Tsawwassen is in berth 6. berths 5,6,7 are all at the back of the refit basin. I don't know how to describe it well, but.. berth 5 goes from one side of berth 4 to the aft end of the tsawwassen, berth 6 is parall to the river and berth 7 goes from the bow of the tsawwassen to the opposite side of the deas refit basin. That would be across from the coquitlam, PJ, ect..

We should start the Refit season starting at the end of September, like you have done chris!
Did we want this thread including anyships that are at the shipyards for the refit?? and then going to deas?

Thanks ferrytraveller. I don't think its necessary to include ships in the drydock, unless they're coming to or from Deas. Here's a berth configuration map I've created to fit what ferrytraveller said.

Does Deas have it's own drydock or does that sort of work contracted out to one of the local shipyrads?

There are no drydocks at Deas. For "out of the water experiences" the ferries go either to Esquimault or North Van. Not a hard and fast rule, but more often these days it seems quickie jobs go to Esquimault and larger rebuilds seem to go to Washington Marine Group.
*Just a thought but would anyone find the same sort of diagram Chris has done useful for the berths at Tswwassen, Swartz Bay, Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay?

I think something would be useful, with colour coded about purpose and listing the primary users (route/ship - not actual ship, but like "Second Ship Tsw-SWB" for Berth 4 of Tsawwassen) that uses the berth.
The one that would be almost more usefulful would be some of the smaller terminals with tie-up berths.

General rule of thumb: as you approach a Terminal from the water, the berths are numbered starting from right to left. Not sure why that is, but it's pretty accurate.

because in english we read left to right, and the signs are put up by terminal staff? or they are looking at the berths from the shore side?
It makes it easier for crew if they know that the numbers are always the same way.
Are the berth light/colours standardized throughout the fleet, (that is the light that is above the berth structure) I think I have seen yellow, red and green at HSB.

They are numbered in the order they were built. Simple as that.

At Tsawwassen berth 2 was built first. The next berth built was the one south of it which was originally numbered 2. When berths 3 & 4 were built numbers 1 & 2 were reversed so that 2 became 1 and 1 became 2. Does this make sense?

Ohh I always thought berth 1 was built first. At least it seems that way in the pictures Ive seen. I'll take another look. WCK is probably right.

With regard to last month's now 'locked' flagship thread. Mike, aka Flugel Horn, asked the following question of me: I have been visiting my brother over the last couple of days. A trip to Deas dock was a part of this most recent visit. Anyways, David says that back in the 'refit season' of 1984/85 (or perhaps it was the following year) he made a routine photo stop at Deas, just as we did yesterday. He was surprised to find that they were not only repainting the vessels there, but also giving them a whole new livery. He had no advance knowledge that this change was in the works. Although he very much liked the original scheme, he also approved of the Expo scheme. As I have said before he is not a big fan of the current BCFS colours. Another shot from that long ago Deas visit... DOT photo ©Yesterday we saw no livery changes in the works, but we did see two vessels that have been 'de-slugged'. WetCoastKid:
Thanks for that picture-info from your Brother, re our flagship photo.
Re your current photo posted above from a few days ago, did you and David visit on-site at Deas for that photo, or was that taken from off-site with zoom?
Just wondering if your brother was allowed to visit Deas again. If he was allowed, that would be great (my assumption that someone at Deas would know of the history re your brother's art work and appreciate it enough to give him access to do some more....)

Berths are numbered from left to right from the perspective of the vehicles in the holding lanes.

Just watching Siitech right now....looks like there is 3 tugs at Deas now, preparing to pull one of them out. Who could it be?

My gut feeling is that those tugs have come to escort the Queen of Tsawwassen to her new home on the coast.

I popped over past Deas on my way to get my lunch and saw what is going on... sort of.
There is a barge from Fraser River Pile & Dredge with a crane on it. The crane is positioned at the Queen of Surrey's bow. The tug I assume is holding the barges position.
No vessels have moved from their berths today.
