Perhaps BC Ferries would give passes to ferry nerds to act as docents on routes . HAHA, we would be the last people BCF wants to hire as nerds. We know WAY to much. They would want to hire someone they can brainwash to tell a manufactured truth. As for pictures of equipment at Deas. I've been into Deas 6 times, EGD once and Vancouver Drydock once as well, depending on who I am meeting there or what is going on in the yard I have been asked three times to leave my camera behind in the truck. I don't know exactly why some choose to ban cameras and some don't, but I'm not going to question the logic of the guy nice enough to take time out of his day to help me. Cheers,

a real gem from the BC Archives of Deas Dock back in the '60s, featuring four ferries, all of which no longer exist: The Sechelt Queen, Pender Queen, Bainbridge, and Cy Peck (or George S. Pearson?). Note: image is property of the Province of British Columbia.

:)maybe we should forward this plight of the Deas dock horizon to the hon. Keven Falcon as our seasons greetings card, and he can post it next to his caddy! I am referring to our blurred for eye protection Norad ex Sonja! ???mrdot.

LOL I totally agree that the NorAd is the ugliest ship BCF has ever owned. Thanks for censoring the image, it honestly is easier on the eyes. The message on the photo was pretty funny too. That was actually the first time I saw her myself, and I must say she has some pretty weird angles when you get a good look at that so-called ship. I sure wish BCF got rid of her and gave a major upgrade to the QPR

It is better, at least, that she stays at Deas for the winter, and doesn't litter the beautiful scenery of the Inside Passage. She is now only the summer Haida Gwaii boat (except when the NorEx is in refit).

I say BC Ferries should just sell NA for scrap and use the money to build a better Northern addition that represents the northern route. Atleast the Ex Queens of the northern route were beautiful with lines that did not create a box shape.

And so what do you expect them to do in the meantime with 1 boat??? The Nor Ad is ffine she isent great but she will do. I think the Chilliwack is the ulgy boat even though I like the Chilliwack it isent the greatest looking I think the Nor Ad is better! Have you sailed on the Nor Ad?? Don't judge a book by it's cover.

:)you know what, mrdot. thinks the norad is actually better looking than many modern vessels of this boxboat age, but is a snoopy the dog to ride in a seaway, and is a fuelhog, the wack on the other hand is not an attractive vessel, but over many years, has proved her worth and has been money well spent, this can't be said of the wretched sonja! the built in BC- QPR, while old and tired, looks pritty good down fiji way, forty years on since I worked her decks, norad is a piece of junk in only five years! ::)mrdot.

I have spent a little over 14 hours on the NorAd, and I can say for sure that the ship is a piece of [insert potentially offensive slur here]. 1: She is ugly like a bee up a cow's butt 2: Her interior styling is better suited for a 1980s roller rink. 3: Her interior also collects dirt way faster and easier than any other ship in the fleet. More weird crannies for it to accumulate, ie, the window sills in the lounges. 4: So much useless unused tonnage it's not even funny. 5: She rocks and rolls like a whale on cocaine, even in flat seas. 6: Vibrations are worse than what I experienced on the Chilliwack. 7: Layout of the passenger areas seems like it was designed by a young child. 8: Her car deck is horribly laid out too. 9: Loading procedures take ages, due to what's mentioned in point #8 10: From what I've heard from her crew, she's absolutely horrible when it comes to controlling the ship. Rudder's too small, apparently, to be able to steer as well as they'd want her to. 11: Cigarette smoke literally vents into the cafeteria from the smoking area on the stern. 12: So many raised sills to trip on, it's not even funny. 13: Passenger cabin deck laid out awkwardly. 14: What's going on with that unused Lighthouse Cafe on the outside deck anyway? 15: Must I go on...? The Northern Adventure is a piece of junk, and she always will be. The ONLY thing that I like about her is that you can access her bathrooms directly from the outside deck. I wonder what she'll look like inside after BCF gives her a real refit. I don't believe she's ever gotten a proper remodeling after joining the fleet.

Ferries lined up @ BC Ferries' Deas Dock Maintenance Base ( Victoria or Vancouver, Burnaby, Pacificat Voyager) - c 2000 photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr[/size] The ferry at the left is either the Queen of Victoria or its twin, the Vancouver. Using several clues, I am now pretty much sure that this is the Victoria, and the photo was taken about 6 months she left our waters in January 2001. The ferry in the middle is definitely the Queen of Burnaby. You can read the name of the ferry on the right. Mr. DOT - your recollections please. Also, the thoughts of others are welcome.

The Vancouver has almost no black band on hers.

Also, I guess that would have been the year the Burnaby was brought back into the fleet. She would have been waiting at Deas to take over for the Sidney, at Comox-Powell River.

Thanks for pointing that out Chris. That photo is definitely from 2000 - the late spring or summer, I believe. Mr. DOT is not able to comment as he is currently away and won't be catching up with the forum until next week.
The Victoria would have been half a year away from leaving BC waters for good, and the Burnaby would have been setting off for Little River not long after the photo was taken. As for the Voyager, she was destined to just sit around at Deas for several years, I gather. She never did a revenue run for BC Ferries, I understand.

The words "BC Ferries" never graced the Voyager's hull I believe. By the time she hit the water the fate of the project was essentially sealed. I attended all three launches. The first was very much a celebration, the second was a bit toned down but still positive, and the third was a non-event. Sort of amazing to see how quickly things can change, particularly in these politically fueled boats. I suppose I am posting this in the wrong thread!
Perhaps I could be mistaken, but I believe there was also quite a delay between vessel 2 and 3 for some reason. The project was so late by that point that details sort of became irrelevant in my mind. The fitting out of the third boat was also done without BC Ferries corporate branding inside I also seem to recall, knowing that the ship was bound for service (or lack thereof) elsewhere.
